The magnifacent Tomcat was the premier navy fighter for decades. Its high tech radar and fire control systems made it almost impossible to beat. It is really a case of highly trained US pilots versus poorly trained Libyans. Why did America need to make aggressive gestures towards Libya, going into it's back yard, threatening and bombing? They will tell you because Qaddafi supported terrorism, but they will not tell you that that the terrorism was retaliation for US/UK trying to start a civil war in Libya to overthrow Qaddafi. People like General Haftar (now again prominent in Libya politics) were CIA assets. The US/UK love to plunge a vulnerable developing society into a vicious civil war to kill thousands just to expand their own power and influence. If you try to plunge other people's countries into war and chaos expect to pay a heavy price one day.

Interesting reconstruction. Hard job has done. But MiG-23s skins are wrong. Both MiGs carry not Libian green circles but Ukrainian tridents and yellow-blue cockades. One annoying mistake spoils the entire video, taking into account that Ukrainian Air Force newer participated described conflict.
When they realized that this was going to go bad to the point of shooting you could hear it in their voice, the adrenalin dump was beginning and you could hear it in their voices all the way through the event and the exit from the area. We have felt and had the same feeling when we went on a large structure fire or Haz-Mat event in the fire service!

We had the same type of encounter with Libya during our 85/85 IO Cruise. Same basic setup; we're cruising off the coast of Libya and they are telling us that their border extends out to some insane distance. I was down in Combat next to the AT's and we had two F-14's flying CAP. The CO was down there with the Admiral. It's like the little guy in the neighborhood that picks a fight with the big badass; it never ends well. Great video!
I was in VF-143 when they transitioned from F-4's to F-14's and didn't want to re-up to go along. Went to VF-114 and finished with the F-4. For my money, the F-4J was the best fighter ever made if you consider it's competition during it's heydey.
This is a great animation and audio of this encounter. 5 times we tried to avoid a fight, finally, lets do'em. Russian junk...we are 20 years advanced in combat aviation. Soviet technology is behind the curve. if it goes down, the us military will own the sky's over Moscow in 3-5 days.
