In 1973 Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi claimed the Gulf of Sidra as territorial waters. Gaddafi named it The Line of Death, crossing this line would invite a military response. The USS John F. Kennedy was deployed near the Libyan coast. Late in the morning on January 4, 1989, Combat Air Patrol station was taken by two F-14A Tomcats belonging to the VF-32 Swordsmen squadron.Due to the presence of the Kennedy battle group near the Libyan coast, pilots were advised to expect some hostilities.
Tensions between Libya and the U.S. were high after the U.S. accused Libya of building a chemical weapons plant near Rabta, causing the U.S. to deploy the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) near its coast.
The engagement is known as Gulf of Sidra incident.

I was there. What a rush to be on the flight deck during the incident. It was actually like Top Gun. The tomcats did a fly-by after returning to the carrier, landed, and all the sailors surrounded the planes and pilots. Proud day to be an American!

We had the same type of encounter with Libya during our 85/85 IO Cruise. Same basic setup; we're cruising off the coast of Libya and they are telling us that their border extends out to some insane distance. I was down in Combat next to the AT's and we had two F-14's flying CAP. The CO was down there with the Admiral. It's like the little guy in the neighborhood that picks a fight with the big badass; it never ends well. Great video!

I was in VF-124 (Top Gun) @ NAS Miramar in 1974 (as a Plane Captain), and afterwards spent the next 3 years in VF-1, making 3 deployments on The USS Enterprise. The F-14 was a spectacular aircraft, but it (initially) did have engine problems, as the engines installed in the early models were not designed for it, but modified to fit, and I personally witnessed 3 crashes due to engine failures at sea and on land, but this problem was eventually remedied.

well the F-14As suck. I tried that in every sim and the engines suck. F-14B-D are MUCH better for dogfighting. F-14A is better for intercepting. Unless ur dogfighting againts like early migs etc. but dont use F-14A againts mig-29 or F-16 for example.
@sab2871
@sab2871 10 лет назад
jfitnesshealth Jfitness , you were a naval pilot ? The F 14 was bascailly designed and built in tandem with the f15 , they were both part of the same project to build " super fighters " . It is more of an intercepter than fighter unlike the F15 but the navy trained for years again the Northrop F5 tiger / T 38 Talon which is far more nimble , but again this was the same tactics as were used in Vietnam with the larger F5 Phanthom against the mig 15s and 17s .
@jfitnesshealth

no but talked with F14 pilots in the 90s. my uncle now retired did maintenance for them from 70s till mid 90s. Also my older cousin is a test pilot for Fighter jets. The Engines for F-14A use to shut off during certain pressures or stress . Compressor was sensitive etc. When dogfighting it bleeds speed pretty bad and engines made it hard to regain energy at times. The intenet was to be a bomber intercepting Jet at the time . They wanted to increase the power of the jets early but changed their minds because more powerful jets ment improving the airframe and allowing more Gs they said. The engines WERE terrible. F-14A's did a great job of what it was suppost to do, but ALL pilots said that most of the time for F-14As they focused on "flying the engines" not flying the aircraft. F-14B and D fixed this issue. BIGGGGGGG improvement.

@jackboyer1280
@jackboyer1280 5 лет назад
Right I too want over whelming force. With the politicians setting the rules of engagement they can kiss my butt. You have to be actually have love bullets hitting to close before you can return fire. Screw that I wouldn't give anyone first shot at me, of course I wasn't a good soldier either. Still feel the same today as I did in the 60's
@jecammer
@jecammer 5 лет назад
Jack Boyer you’re alive, so it sounds to me like you did something right. As a police officer we have a saying, “ it’s better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6”. In my opinion, to be happy in life you need a code to live by, and then you do your absolute best to never break it. I think in the long run you receive more respect, even from people you do not share your values. And for those people who don’t understand this...... lol I’m sure you know how I feel about that. The libs have all these off the wall ideas on how to make the United States better, how many of them have worked?
@jecammer
@jecammer 5 лет назад
Cobradriver99 the libs are a “foreign country” they certainly don’t act like Americans or share our values. Socialism? Doesn’t work. England’s health care system is going broke. Denmark is giving the responsibility of retirement income back to its people, it’s free college with a living stipend is in trouble because students are delaying graduation as long as possible to avoid going to work. Top it off with our press failing in their most important job, “being the watchdog of the people”, the Forth Estate of government. 85% or more of all major network and newspaper reporters are registered Democrats. We send our children to public schools and colleges to have them brain washed and forced fed the same values and ideals, that in the past this country has gone to war to put down. Oops, sorry I have been watching the news again. Please vote, we can change things. We have seen the proof.

I was an F-14 pilot for VF-213 and got into a dogfight with a Russian Mig-23 on February 8, 1988 off the southern coast of Vietnam. The Soviets were occupying that air base, Cham Ran Bay. It was no match for the F-14 and easy for me to stay behind the Mig. I am guessing it was not a very experienced pilot due to the maneuvers he/she did - nose high, bleeding off airspeed then arcing in a very predictable path.

@toyotawitha20mm35
@toyotawitha20mm35 2 года назад
@Blob B yeah the mig 29 out turns the F-14, the F-15 can keep its speed but its a damn brick of a plane, it has a small aspect ratio for its weight, small stubby wings that don't cause a lot of lift , thrust to weight ratio doesn't mean much if your plane has a lousy wing design.
@toyotawitha20mm35

Funny tidbit- the pilot of the tomcat that made the second kill didn't have the Sidewinder's mode switch set correctly at first. This is what prevented him from getting tone at first, despite his A-1 position. However, hearing himself say it again the second time on the com, he instantly realized his mistake, and made the correction. That's why the growl came on instantly at full volume immediately after he said "I don't have @#% tone"..... nice kills for sure, but it coulda been fatal had he overshot and given the mig driver a quick gun shot before his wingman, who was flying high cover and no doubt screaming to shoot could have saved his ass.

Libyans tried to say at the U.N., after the incident, that their planes weren't even armed, so why were they shot down, etc., etc. And they thought it would be our word against theirs. Then the guy representing the Navy informed the gathering that the Tomcats were equipped with Tactical Air Reconnaissance Pods, and showed them the pictures of the migs' armament configuration that they took right before they wasted them. The T.A.R.P.S. pod made a liar out of them in front of everyone. Swordsmen out.

The terse response is I just didn't want to reskin the planes graphics. Its alot of work. I loved the audio and wanted to make a visual representation. It was just something I made for fun, cockpits are incorrect as well. It gets pointed out a lot.

This engagement is a supreme example of why the F-14 was so well regarded as the thoroughbred fighter that it was. The Libyan pilots that went up that day must've known they we're on a rendezvous with certain death. Even flown by Russian pilots, the MiG-23 is dangerously inferior to the F-14 in every possible measure.......except airspeed in a firey nose dive after being smoked by an Apex or Sidewinder.

Lol. That's just stupid cartoon and you believe in that bullshit like in reality. Typical american moron. There are no video or photo showing that Libyan planes had any missiles under wings or did shooting or any other aggressive maneuvers. it's seen that Libyan plane is shot down from short distance in rear semisphere while it was trying to avoid any contact and to fly away. They were also unarmed and did routing training flight, as it was declared by Libyan government.

You believe only in US propaganda and you even cannot check other points of view , because you are stupid and you don't know foreign languages and info delivered to you by your mass media is filtered. That photo does not prove anything. First question is who made. Second question is, why should anyone believe that that is Mig that was involved in that accident. Maybe picture was made in Syria or in Iraq, or somewhere else. Third question is, if admit that Mig had missiles under wing, why they didn't shoot them while they were on shooting distance. To use that photo as evidence, other photos and facts are necessary. Besides, those big objects under wings do not look like air-to-air missiles at all, especially of types that Mig-23 used to use. They look almost exactly like additional fuel tanks. US propaganda like to use blurry unclear photos as "prove" of their bullshit. It reminds me "prove" of american mass media when they tried to convince people that Pentagon on September 11 was hit by Boeing jet, and not by Tomahawk cruise missile. They showed some shitty short video where was very hard to determine what is flying, and that object was much closer to look of cruise missile that to jambo jet.

The battle group was sailing away from Libya and wasn't even in the Gulf of Sidra. The battle group was 120 miles north of Tobruk which is a coastal city in the far NE corner of Libya. The F-14s were vectored by an E-2 on the first of 2 pairs of MiG-23s going straight for the battle group. The 6 offsets were meant to allow a peaceful intercept that would enable a join-up from astern and an escort position until the MiGs departed the area. Instead, the MiGs kept setting a collision course.

I remember this. It was primetime news back in 1989. The regular media outlets cut out alot of the audio negating what really was said and what was actually happening. The radio had the full audio clip; something akin to a BBC station; impossible to know which frequency that was. Me and my father talked about the event as he brought the radio to have me listen to. And the fact that the audio was not presented fully to the public. He was wise. My father died a month later.

Migs were totally outclassed in this engagement. The AWG radar was vastly superior to the Migs radar that had a 30 km max range. The F14's had them locked up while the Migs couldn't even see them yet on their radar screens, thats why they were dependant on ground control radar to guide them. Also the radar guided AA7 Apex missile was 1960's tech with a limited range of 35 klm. The AIM 54 had a range of up to 190 klm.

Thats the reason why the US-military can ground every airforce of the arabian world in a very short time. Its the huge technological superiority of the western technics compared to the inferior and unsuficiend maintained russian tech used in those countries.
@synapse131

TOFKAS01 Have you looked at the newest generation of Russian missiles? They have SARH that out-range our missiles and they've been developing an AMRAAMSKI ARH missile for many years. Their short range IR homers have higher off bore capability as well; that's if they can get close enough to use them. But they have some good missiles; don't count them out completely. Their fighters aren't as bad as we thought all those years either. We always thought the pilots didn't have any ability and they just did what ground control told them to do (likely because they had limited radars in the past and GCI had to guide them to intercept.) But we have found since they have really good pilots and they can fly very independently. They may not have the money themselves to develop all of the technology on their own, but because the export a lot of military hardware, it gives them more of an ability to develop the technology. Never underestimate a potential enemy.
@TOFKAS01
@TOFKAS01 9 лет назад
synapse131 Yes, they are developing technologies, the west developed 30 years ago. "Their fighters aren't as bad as we thought all those years either." Indeed, but the sovjet union suffered from a specific flaw they never were able to correct: They could develop very good designs but failed in manufacturing and material-quality.

There were no AIM-54s in this engagement. The missile launches happened within visual range using AIM-7 and AIM-9. AA-7 Apex has been improved over the years, it's not like it was a 60s missile. Take AIM-9 for example, you can't really call it a 50s missile unless you know which version you are talking about.
@TOFKAS01
@TOFKAS01 9 лет назад
***** Sure, but there is also the question: Did the Libyans had these weapons in this engagement? Of course the russian jets would be up to date but how about the export-versions.

When they realized that this was going to go bad to the point of shooting you could hear it in their voice, the adrenalin dump was beginning and you could hear it in their voices all the way through the event and the exit from the area. We have felt and had the same feeling when we went on a large structure fire or Haz-Mat event in the fire service!
