This from a time when people were cultured. I believe the organ still exists in a private residence that was a converted VFW facility.

Thank you for posting this! Very, very much appreciated. And DO play this loud on a good sound system so you hear the low pipes! Totally gorgeous photography! Greetings from Canada!

Sad fact: only the organ console is still around. Most of the pipes were charred in a fire.

Correction: This church is not anymore Crystal Cathedral, but CHRIST CATHEDRAL. The organ, the sound, the organist, the playing art, and everything there..., nothing els than excellence!!!

When making this recording Carlo had great problems and had to redo a lot of this recording during the night and early morning as to his horror it was bastille day and they were large explosions going off.

Wow! The great Van den Heuvel organ as I've never heard it on any other recording! Carlo Curley, RIP, enjoyed playing in a sumptuous romantic style and was notably communicative with his audiences.

This has to be (in my opinion) the greatest piece of music of all time.... Some say that the Toccata and Fugue in D minor is Bach calling to God (credit to V.F. for that).... I however feel that it is this piece... the interweaving of the simple melody line spoken in every (tongue and language) that man has ever known... This piece calls to God.... God Omnipotent... God all knowing... God all loving... To play this piece takes a herculean effort and split second timing.... if the organist hesitates or should false start the piece loses its charm and charisma.... Carlo had heavenly help from the spirit of God and second V.F. who was his best friend in life.... Carlo has since this been reunited with Our Heavenly Father and his best friend Virgil Fox.... I can only imagine when Carlo stepped into the gates of Heaven and He suddenly was surrounded by Virgil Fox, Handel, Lizt and so many others....all those men saying Welcome home....

How I miss Fred. I was introduced to the glory of organ music during his time at Riverside Church. He gave us the best of this remarkable instrument. He gave his gift to the end. It will always be with us. As will Fred Swann.

In my honest opinion, this is Bach's crowning organ achievement. His life was devoted to God, and this monumental piece is so inspiring! I can only imagine being there in person when this was recorded.. Wonderful!

“Blackhawk goal Dirk Graham…” Always wanted to go to a Hawks game there as a kid in Michigan. Loved the organ watching on TV50 in Detroit. JLA was pretty good, but Chicago Stadium gave me a taste of what the old Olympia must have been like.

I know the score says add Tuba at the end but it really is better without the addition of a loud farty PHWAAAAAAHRPP, not aurally appealing. 🙉🙉🙉

There was NOTHING in todays hockey world that exists like OLD Chicago Stadium. The organ playing Here Comes the Hawks. playing the recorded song when the Hawk's took the ice with the fans cheering was so electric. So happy I got to watch so many great Blackhawk games at old Chicago Stadium. Wayne Messmer, singing the National Anthem was ELECTRIFYING with the fans going nuts, Tony Esposito, the SSL line Savard, Larmer and Secord, such great times.

It was a beautiful organ, with 6 sets of keys (technically 7 since the foot pedals on a pipe organ are also keys). While the organ’s console still exists and is in private possession, the pipes were destroyed in a fire

Having played the Van Der Heuval Instrument in St. Eustace I feel your anguish in your explanation of the emotions in this "different" Carlo tonal fantasy. This piece has come to express your grief at your betrayal by a former friend.. I ponder ...."why" carlo oplayed it thus ? I don't think he was trying to be "different"...just his tonal "perception" & symphonic phrasing was on trial here !

I listened to this many times, it's fascinating and, definitely, Carlo Curley is one of the very few who fully understood what one can do with a Guillou organ, not imitating Jean Guillou, but inspired by his way and the organ he conceived, hyper-registrating, switching keyboards, letting us hear, very individual sounds and using all of them, alternating ppp and fff, slowing down and speeding up... This is real mastery, it does justice to the instrument and at the same time this is a travel to a not yet explored Bach, revealing new aspects of a Passacaglia I thought I knew by heart. GREAT !

I am a Red Wings fan in Huntington Woods, Mich. Suburb like Oak Park, IL. but a Detroit suburb. Went to 60 odd games at Joe Louis Arena, but always jealous that the Blackhawks fans had an original arena. My Dad went to the Detroit Olympia a few times. Loved the Chi goal horn.

This is very challenging piece to play, because the ostinato needs contrasts like this presentation does: dynamic changes, different stops and manual changes etc. I like the tempo👍🏻❤️
