Daniel Chorzempa plays the famous Toccata from Charles-Marie Widor's fifth symphony for organ - opus 42 no 1.
The instrument is the fabulous Cavaillé-Coll organ from 1888 in Basilique St. Sernin, in Toulouse, France.
A very nice recording from 1983. No longer available.
One of my favourite interpretations of this piece. A bit fast, I know, but with phenomenal rhythmic precision and articulation. I think that Widor would have been very pleased with this performance.

The acoustics matter a lot. In the more common and more reverberant settings, I usually prefer a little slower, but this piece works brilliantly as well.

This is my favourite rendering of Widor's Toccata, as Chorzempa pushed the organ to it's maximum, leaving it almost asthmatic gasping for air. I have this on a promotional CD 'Hear the Light on Philips'. I have never been able to find out where and at what organ it was recorded. Many thanks for that. If you like what you hear here I urge you to get it on CD, as it is a rich registration, which can hardly be copied by youtube.

Chorzempa never disappoints. Impeccable sense of rhythm (not easy when playing pipes) and masterful musical sense make this recording my absolute favorite of this finger dancing piece. I guess it takes the ear of a pianist to make such an unwieldy instrument sound so well.

That's a remarkable interpretation, having a decrescendo in registration coincide with the beginning of the coda at 4:17 and then gradually start bringing it back up to full organ at 4:50 concluding with the tutti at 5:13. A display of subtle artistic genius triumphing over the usual temptation for cheap fortissimo thrills.

This performance shows exactly what's possible with this wonderful piece on an authentic French Cavaillé-Coll organ. The sound world is amazing, with crisp articulation and wonderful registration. It's a bright tempo but it works beautifully, unlike some of the vulgar speeds some so-called musicians deploy for sheer showmanship (or showwomanship - you'll know to whom I;m referring).

The director of music at my childhood church played this piece on our 1962 three-manual Holtkamp organ, and I was in love at first listen. I turned the pages for him each year as he played this for the Easter service postlude. In my young adult years, he took a job in NYC, and when I asked him how I would get my fix, he recommended Chorzempa’s rendition, and I couldn’t have been happier. The organists that succeeded him couldn’t hold a candle to his performance, so I would pop in Chorzempa’s CD after church each year. Glad to see so many in agreement with me on DC’s prowess.

It would be a delight to hear the Toccata on this instrument, after the restoration of 1997. Not all additions and alterations improve an instrument, however this is a lovely performance, and the organ handles the piece with grace and lightness. The performer paces it well, and phrases it with nicely balanced energy. Mr. Chorzempa has a great "sense" for this work.

Dramatic interpretation, demonstrates characteristics which exemplify Cavaille-Coll's well deserved organ building skill and artistry. With registrations employing many of the instrument's resources from blazing chamade trumpets to pedal reeds, much better than some of the CDs I have which are "dry" regarding both the organ and the ambience of St. Sernin.

Articulation...

@lmharry7875
@lmharry7875 9 лет назад
@earthlightsmusic2743
@earthlightsmusic2743 5 лет назад
The tempo I am used to that of Xavier Durasse in the Turnabout Records playlist, which follows the composer's own tempo. This organist takes it at more the speed of an American organist playing an electropneumatic action -- but gets away with it because the slider chests keep the pipes' attacks all in sync and mud-free.

Wonderful played and wonderful organ!! But it seems to be necessary to remove the dust on the flat surfaces of the prospect of the organ, which look rather dirty...
@Steff2929again
@Steff2929again 2 года назад
Old pipe organs are often dusty and sometimes even downright dirty, especially inside. However, disturbing the dust will more often than not lead to unexpected and sometimes quite serious problems. There is a saying 'Let sleeping dust lie'. As long as there aren't any mechanical issues, it's better to let it rest. Major cleaning is usually done when the organ is overhauled by an organ builder. Cleaning the case of a large instrument in a difficult to reach location often requires scaffolding. That won't happen until the pipework and the inner workings of the organ must undergo a major renovation.
@zollst
@zollst 2 года назад
@@Steff2929again -> Thank you for your interesting remarks. The dust (only) on the organcase, especially on its flat surfaces, in our place gets removed and polished from time to time by volunteer members of our fire-department. They get a "case of beer" for it, need only ladders for this job and do it very thorough and satisfactory....
@Steff2929again
@Steff2929again 2 года назад
@@zollst Sounds like an excellent solution! For all involved. It all depends on the location. The St. Sernin organ is very high up. It is also classified as a 'Monument historique' which strictly regulates what can be done and how it must be done. I can only imagine the amount of paperwork necessary to fill out before you can even start.
