The UCSD engineering department has been diligently working on a device that provides real-time feedback on muscle flexion and extension, as well as insights into peak performance and asymmetrical deficiencies. This device utilizes a tape placed near the hips to monitor muscular contractions and imbalances during deadlifts. The deadlift exercise begins at a baseline and introduces three different stimuli to enhance loading: foot height discrepancy, asymmetrical weight loading, and banded torsion. As the project progresses through various development phases, we will continue to gather and analyze data. We might present this in Italy in September-stay tuned for updates! #Engineering #Innovation #MusclePerformance #UCSD #Biomechanics #FitnessTech #Deadlifts #Research #TechInFitness #StayTuned

An athlete’s potential is often enhanced by a coach’s insight and guidance. Watching athletes and coaches collaborate, each elevating the other, is truly inspiring. Every day, we dedicate ourselves to helping others achieve their goals and overcome challenges. Through this teamwork, we celebrate successes, learn from failures, and grow together. It’s a testament to what hard work and mutual support can accomplish. We’re excited to see what new milestones John and Andrew will reach together on this journey. #HandBalancing #Handstands #FlexibilityTraining #Stretching #Gymnastics #Calisthenics #BodyweightTraining #FitnessJourney #StrengthAndFlexibility #Mobility #CoreStrength #BalanceTraining #FitnessGoals #AcroYoga #YogaPractice #StrengthTraining #GymLife #FitnessCommunity #TrainingTogether #CoachAndAthlete

The tongue, along with the eyes and spine, is part of the center or midline of the body. By practicing limericks, you can activate not just the tongue but also engage the midline of the body, improving performance in various mobility and strength activities. The tongue is innervated by the hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve XII), which controls its movements. Moving the tongue stimulates these nerve branches, promoting better signaling and engagement of the spinal muscles, thereby improving body flexion and extension. Thus, practicing limericks can enhance neural coordination and overall physical performance. However, everyone is unique, and each nervous system must test to find what works best for you! Happy testing! Let us know if it helped you :) #Mobility #StrengthTraining #FitnessTips #Flexibility #Wellness #ExerciseScience #PerformanceImprovement #FitLife #Zhealth #TongueTraining #Neurology #HypoglossalNerve #NeuralCoordination #BodyAlignment

The calm before the storm: ensuring your nervous system is ready to perform is crucial when reaching high levels of performance. One effective method is incorporating single-eye visual input with rotational awareness. This engages the brain’s visual and spatial processing centers, sharpening focus and improving coordination. By processing asymmetric visual information, managing rotational movements, and overcoming depth perception challenges with one eye, you create a dynamic neural environment that enhances reaction times, balance, and overall performance. Integrating these exercises into your routine can serve as an excellent primer for optimal brain signaling, ensuring you’re mentally and physically primed to excel under pressure. #PerformanceEnhancement #NervousSystem #BrainTraining #VisualAwareness #Coordination #Focus #ReactionTime #Balance #MentalPreparation #PhysicalPreparation #Zhealth #NHL #Hockeytraining

Training an athlete’s visual system holds the highest priority for priming the nervous system because our brain relies most heavily on vision. Second in importance is vestibular awareness, which pertains to balance and spatial orientation, followed by proprioception, which involves movement and body position. All movements are first mapped in the brain, from everyday actions like brushing teeth to athletic feats like scoring a goal. These actions are first processed in the brain to create an image that the nervous system translates into physical motion. Training the eyes and inner ear (vestibular system) forms the foundation of elite athletic performance. Welcome to the world of applied neuroscience, where enhancing these systems, combined with individual nervous system priming, can bring an athlete to that 1% of elite performance.

The OODA loop, created by military strategist John Boyd, is a decision-making framework comprising four stages: Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act. Here’s a brief overview of each: 1. **Observe**: Gather information from the environment using all available senses. Being attentive and filtering out irrelevant information is crucial. 2. **Orient**: Process and analyze the gathered information, integrating it with existing knowledge and context. This stage involves making sense of the data to prepare for decision-making. 3. **Decide**: Choose the best course of action based on the analysis. Evaluate options, predict outcomes, and select the most effective strategy quickly. 4. **Act**: Implement the chosen action efficiently. Executing informed decisions completes the loop and starts a new cycle of observation. The OODA loop’s strength is its cyclical nature, enabling continuous and rapid adaptation to changing situations. Enhancing this process with convergence and divergence training for vision improves visual information processing. Convergence and divergence training helps the eyes work together by focusing on objects up close and at a distance. These skills enhance the observe and orient stages, leading to quicker and more effective decisions and actions, optimizing the entire OODA loop. #OODAloop #DecisionMaking #SituationalAwareness #ConvergenceTraining #DivergenceTraining #VisionTraining #NHL #HockeyTraining #PerformanceOptimization #ReactionTime #MentalTraining #strategydevelopment

Eccentric rotational movements are crucial for athletes looking to enhance their power output. These movements involve muscles lengthening under tension, which not only promotes greater muscle activation and strength development but also facilitates the storage and release of elastic energy. This stored energy is vital for explosive movements like sprinting, jumping, and rapid changes of direction, significantly improving athletic performance. Moreover, these exercises improve coordination, stability, and proprioception by engaging multiple muscle groups and joints simultaneously. For NHL players, integrating eccentric rotational exercises into their training regimen translates directly into increased skating speed, shooting power, and agility on the ice. Similarly, athletes across various sports can benefit from enhanced power and efficiency in sport-specific movements, such as throwing, swinging, and kicking. By prioritizing eccentric rotational movements, athletes can optimize their physical capabilities, reduce injury risks, and elevate their overall performance levels. #AthleteTraining #StrengthTraining #EccentricTraining #PowerDevelopment #SportsPerformance #InjuryPrevention #AthleteStrength #FunctionalFitness #RotationalMovement #Exxentric

UCSD Engineers are pioneering new frontiers. Providing real-time feedback on a client’s symmetry, activation, and movement can help a coach understand why a track athlete struggles to explode out of the blocks, thanks to detailed data on muscular activation. Physical therapists can enhance non-visual movement awareness for paralyzed patients. Breath work coaches can refine lung expansion techniques using real-time data. The future is here, and we are excited to be part of it. #ucsdengineering #futuretech

Jaw opening with resistance can enhance tricep extensions by promoting neuromuscular facilitation and coordination, improving proprioceptive feedback and motor unit recruitment. This counterbalance effect stabilizes the cervicothoracic region, ensuring biomechanical efficiency and optimized kinetic chain alignment. Engaging the mandibular depressor muscles, such as the digastric, mylohyoid, and geniohyoid, can augment corticospinal activation, facilitating stronger and more synchronized efferent motor signals for the tricep extension. Now for those who have still decided to keep reading. In short. The brain can help send a signal of extension (jaw) to assist another extension (triceps). You would just have to test. The head rotation in the end was to promote improved scapula recruitment. #JawOpening #ResistanceTraining #TricepExtensions #NeuromuscularFacilitation #MotorUnitRecruitment #FitnessScience #StrengthTraining #Zhealth #functionaltraining #triceps #jaw

Back muscles can assist in pushing movements by stabilizing the shoulder and scapulae, and maintaining spinal alignment. Every athlete is unique and sometimes movement patterns cemented with high reps and signaling can ignore areas that would normally support and assist in a press. To ensure consistent performance from an athlete , hunting down weak spots that are under active is essential. #GymLife #Fitness #Workout #FitFam #GymMotivation #FitnessMotivation #StrengthTraining #Cardio #Exercise #Bodybuilding #HealthyLiving #WeightLifting #FitnessGoals #TrainHard #Gains #FitnessAddict #GetFit #FitnessJourney #FitLife

The carbohaler is a device administering small amounts of CO2 similar to our exhalation with bag breathing. CO2 is a natural vasodilator, which means it can help to dilate blood vessels. By increasing CO₂ levels, the blood vessels, including those in the airways, may dilate, potentially improving airflow and oxygen delivery to tissues. In this instance Regan used his awareness of left lung expansion with the grading scale of 1 being worst to 10 as best. Just breath work without Carbohaler and eyes was 5 out of 10. Up to 9 out of 10 with CO2 and visual targets. Excited to talk with Anders @consciousbreathing more about this when I visit Sweden in a few weeks. #Breathwork #ConsciousBreathing #MindfulBreathing #Wellness #HolisticHealth #BreathingExercises #NaturalHealing #RespiratoryHealth #CO2Therapy #Vasodilation #AirwayHealth #BreathAwareness #CO2Breathing #CO2Health #LungHealth #Carbohaler

Many moons ago swimming for me, was a daily sport. Understanding the vestibular system back then would have been such a tool. I struggled with head rotation taking breath on a specific side during freestyle. Incorporating the right primers for your inner ear can allow an athlete to create proper mapping of head movement. Hopefully the swimming community brings vision and vestibular training into its daily warmups as these tools can be a great foundation for athletic performance. #VestibularTraining #VisionTraining #PoolTherapy #AquaticTherapy #WaterRehab #BalanceTraining #EyeExercises #VestibularRehab #AquaticExercises #VestibularHealth #WaterExercises #VisualTraining #PoolWorkouts #RehabInWater #InnerEarHealth #CoordinationTraining #ProprioceptionTraining #VestibularTherapy #BalanceInWater #EyeHealth

Sometimes hunting down only the performance drill ( the drills that help you test better ) leave the rehab drills (the drills you test worse ) on the back burner. To truly create a proper nervous system map we must force the rehabilitation drills to become repatterned and eventually become non threatening. Sprinkling the rehab drills sandwiched between twp performance drills is a great way to add them into your workout. Are there any areas you can’t rehab? Spots that seem to be turned “off” no matter what you do? Leave a comment on something you’d be interested in seeing and I might make a video for ya and see if we can’t shine some light on those “blurry” areas. 👍
