Building upon the foundations of the rich and nuanced Islamic jurisprudential tradition, we apply God's timeless moral imperatives to our current world to advance human knowledge, challenge the status quo, and set a new standard for beauty, reasonableness and goodness in the world.
Under the guidance of Islamic scholar and jurist, Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, we are a team of dedicated academics, professionals and volunteers that are passionate about the beauty of the Islamic tradition.
The Islamic tradition once inspired Muslims to be at the forefront of human discovery and knowledge. Today, Muslims have been left behind in virtually all global conversations and play no role in the moral leadership of our times. By returning to the foundational virtues of the Islamic tradition, we seek to rekindle the spirit of exploration, renew the commitment to knowledge, and represent a moral message that inspires the world.
I'm watching this on the 2nd of October 2024 and oh boy I needed this today. Thank you so much for this video, these are my two favourite Surahs and you've helped me recontextualise them in regards to the awful things that are happening in this world. May Allah bless you for this ❤️
Selam Aleykum, is there any chance u can elaborate a little bit more on the kitab al funun for me? It seems like this book is not really talked about in the internet. I found out about it while reading the search for beauty in Islam and I would love to hear what happened to this kitab.
Jazakallah Khairun for your brilliant analysis of the dilemma at hand, Masha Allah. Significant world events MUST NECESSARILY be addressed in the Qur'an, and we must look to the Qur'an for answers and explanations. Does the Qur'an speak to Occupation? Yes! Does the Qur'an speak to the perpetrators of today's Genocide? Yes! Does the Qur'an speak to Expansionist Colonization? Yes! Does the Qur'an speak to NATO? Yes! Does the Qur'an speak to the UN? Yes! All significant world events and affairs have been addressed by the Qur'an, and all solutions have been offered by the Qur'an. Political, military, monetary, economic, legal, and international strategies have been rigourously laid out in the Qur'an. What's lacking is the Ummah's ability to apply disciplined intellectual analysis through the lenses of the Qur'an. Here's an example of the rigourous and disciplined approach offered by the Qur'an - the Ummah must take a DEFENSIVE POSTURE at this stage of the game, and this Ummah has to seek political, economic, military, and other means of STALE-MATING, not checkmating, the enemy. And these strategies come directly from the Qur'an. In other words, the Quranic solution is the only solution, and intellectual human reasoning alone will fall short of solving this crisis. Yes, human effort and intellect must be applied, but BRIDLED by the Qur'an. So, going forward as an Ummah, when we analyse and when we offer opinion, we MUST be able to point directly to Qur'anic references to substantiate our viewpoints. Otherwise, everyone will say whatever is in his or her head, and this can be likened to flying a plane without a compass or GPS, and without reference points such as mountains or a sunrise or a sunset; in which case, we'll have absolutely no idea as to the direction we're heading.
I am someone who has been called to Islam from the age of 12, and it's been a very long time since then but I haven't officially converted and come out to people about it since it's taken so long for me to learn enough to begin feeling like this is something that's right for me. Anyway: I started watching this before work today, but didn't get super far. Then, walking home I thought to myself, "Would it be appropriate or accurate to call myself a Muslim?" and I thought, "No, because that is more of an aspiration. I hope to be a Muslim and that is going to be a lifelong constant goal. How could I say that I'm always someone who submits to God's will and accepts what God has in store for me regardless of whether I personally like it? I'm definitely not always a muslim in that way. But I could call myself a mu'min, or a believer. That would be more accurate." Then I got home and continued watching this video, and SubhanAllah, Wietske just said basically the exact same thing out loud! This feels like a beautiful sign and confirmation from God that I am on the right path. If anyone would be able to put me into contact with Wietske that would be wonderful as well.
Regarding the slaughtering, what if its done by atheist or agnostics? I know in the US meat is slaughtered by cutting the neck and draining the blood, but I doubt a christian would be doing ut all the time, but we can safely say it is not dedicated to any other God. I would think this is fine as long as you say Bismillah.
Please dear sheikh can you explain us how we can pray in order to understand the beautiful forgiveness ? What does it mean to pray on it ? It is so interesting ……..
De-corrupting the faith (2): Has the Quran stated that the paradisiacal men come into matrimony with the wide-eyed maidens of lofty stature, adorned in delicate silhouettes, while around them youthful servants, just reaching the zenith of maturity, attend them like flawless pearls? strangestbook.wordpress.com/2023/08/04/de-corrupting-the-faith-2/
You know who else only care about optics but not substantive change? Liberals, because their privileges depend on upholding the unjust status quo while they don't want to appear unjust.
As always, every one of Dr. Abou El Fadl’s khutbahs is an absolute treasure and truly transforming! May God protect the Shaykh and increase us all in faith and guidance 🤲🏻
I could never thank you enough Sheikh , listening to you has strengthened my faith. Jazak Allah Kheir, Thank you and all those who help put these videos out
So helpful to have something prescriptive and actionable. I hope we can continue to benefit from your knowledge and teaching for years to come inshallah
The way is hard and painful, when it's the way of truth seeking. Nothing can ease it but Love. Being with Allah as with the true Mate, the only. We don't know how to love, most of the time neither how to be loved. It is so hard .
The old regulations on men's hair are really interesting. One question about modesty being socially constrained: in 19th century Europe, it was considered immodest and scandalous for women to wear pants and immodest to lift the skirt above the ankle, but some early feminists fought against the cumbersome Victorian dress in the rational dress movement. It was illegal for women to wear pants and in France that law has never been repealed though it's no longer enforced. Initially in the 1850s it didn't gain momentum. Rational dress back then was knee length dress with loose pants beneath, which is considered very conservative in today's Western world. There was also the liberation bodice not as constricting as the corset. But the movement for women to wear more practical clothes gained steam in the 1890s when the safety bicycle became popular, because traditional Victorian dress posed a hazard when cycling. That was when women shed the layers and more commonly began wearing pants, though many hotels and restaurants refused to serve women wearing pants, which is why there were the split skirts and skirts that could be converted into pants. Cycling also made women push back against the chaperone system. The Bloomer pants back then were very loose above the knee to conceal the figure. It would take until World World II when women worked men's factory jobs for women's pants to be even more socially acceptable in the West, and until at least the 1970s for women's pants to be accepted as work wear. So what do you think of European women wearing pants in the 1890s? It definitely violated social norms of modesty, but it was also a step forward in practicality of women's clothes. Now I definitely prefer wearing pants to skirts and most women I know usually wear pants. What do you think of pushing against modesty rules when the existing rules are impractical at best or worse unjust?
Thank you for the work you do! These are beautiful pieces of advice that I will try to incorporate into my daily routine. May you have a blessed weekend. Salaam❤
