My interpretation, for what it's worth, of Prof. Abou el Fadl's sermon is that Muslims must move toward a Maqasid al-Islam instead of the present sectarian/racist/partisan approach. Maqasid al-Islam means prioritising the Objectives of Islam over all other things. This inevitably entails the marginalisation of many (especially all petty) aspects enshrined by the schools of thought or Madhahib (Hanafi/Maliki/Hanbali/Shafei/Jafari/Zaydi/Ibadi etc).
