Jane magnolia is awesome, thanks for sharing the details. I have a Jane tree almost 15 ft tall, 20 yrs old. But I need to remove its very close to the house wall . But I don't want to cut it. Do have idea how it can be relocated or utilized to grow a new Jane tree? TIA
This plant was overtaking part of my backyard and tangled with a bunch of other plants so I chopped it all down. Will it grow back in a controllable way?
I’d like a double file Mariesi vibernum and want to know if ok to uplimb that as well . I’m in zone 5 Chicago . I’d like the double file as a neighbor screen in front of a fence so it’s even higher privacy . Plenty of sun . You are saying Shasta goes big like 10 plus but many say they are 6 ft ?? . Which is the larger double file . Want to put it in a corner fence area . Want to uplimb 5 ft or more so I can underplant flowers . Is that ok . Thanks
I have a ‘Blue ice’ Cypress, It’s its fist season in the ground so it’s still very young. Unfortunately the leader snapped right off in a storm. There was a part in the video where you said not to cut the leader off. I guess my question is, what happens if you do, or it snaps off like in my case?
I have a dwarf Ms Kim lilac in a pot and leaves are cupping and sort of dry. I water it 2 -3 times a week full sun. There’s no bugs or anything I noticed. I am zone 9 Calif. it does get very hot so this morning I put it in shade thinking it can be stressed out. Any ideas?
How often should I water it and why leaves are falling during the summer, what do I do wrong?...I bought it very big and it stays half of day in the sun, but for a week the leaves started to fall down 😢
Thank you. I just received my first Miss Kim today in a #2 container. When I took it out of the box I noticed the bottom leaves had some insect bites. Should I be concerned about this?
We live near a state park and our neighborhood is overrun with deer. If they are hungry enough deer will eat anything... but they leave our wax myrtles alone. They will gobble up a Nellie Stevens holly or and Emily Bruner holly as if they're an option in a salad buffet, but they don't care for the wax myrtles at all!
I planted mine in the ground in early spring, flowered some but now not getting more leaves. Just top part of tree has leaves. It is planted in full sun. I am in Youngsville, NC zone 8A. Please advise! Gisèle.
I have so much carys. I even use them to marinate my chicken. It’s crazy. I just made probably 30 cuttings. And every single one survived. They smell so good
That's a fantastic description, thank you! Do have any thoughts/knowledge about "Lil ditty dwarf viburnam cassinoides"? We're in zone 7b in Roanoke and we want to pick the best one. My wife has some Lil' Ditty pegged for purchase but the one you described sounds so perfect!
zone 5 Here, we have 6 of them all around 5 feet tall right now. if they are by a gutter downspout they will get too much water. a had to divert the water with a concrete spout on the ground.
This is the perfect potential size for what I need, and I'm looking for evergreen. I was in zone 6b but they changed the zones slightly and I'm in 7a now. I'm questioning this plant's ability to survive now in my area.... it's be in more shade than sun, and on a slight slope but right against/next to my house under a window. Any thoughts?
Hello. Only seeing this video now, but wanted to take time to say I think this was a great review. I have been web searching on "purple shrubs," which is, I'm sure, why your 2-year-old video was served to me, but I'm so glad it was. This has moved to the top of my list of plants to add to my new landscape plan, thanks to your thorough and informative review.
My garden faces north in the UK. Recently, I embarked on a new landscaping project, and incorporating this resilient plant has truly illuminated a previously dim area, complementing ferns and heucheras beautifully.
I'm glad you did this video, I already followed your channel but I typed in french "miss kim lilac pruning and your video showed up ! I really enjoy this kinda short videos on one plant/type of plant, thanks again Jim ! (mine is in a container and I have it since a few weeks and already had some nice flowers, good to know it does well in container :) )
I have a Jane magnolia that I purchased from Lowe's maybe 16 years ago. It's now about 13 feet tall and it does produce a second smaller flush of blooms in the early summer. It's a beautiful magnolia that is worth having in your yard. I'm in Kentucky in zone 6B.
Hi Jim, I'm truly a novice gardener, I just completed a master gardener certification course. That said, I not sure if my Magnolia is a Jane, but certainly looks like the one you have in this video but has to be over 20 years old and I had it pruned only on the outer branches over the past years. Now that I have some training I noticed many large internal branches that have been rubbing to the point the rubbed away some of the outer bark and internal wood of the branches getting rubbed. The shrub or tree still flowers every year including those branches up high. Should I still remove them to the ground or shorten them to the point where they no longer rub?, Thanks for any advise!
Jim, please help! I took your recommendation and purchased 3 of these to create a hedge. Two of them came with black spots on the leaves and within days of planting them, it’s now spread to my new Chindo Viburnums (also from your recommendation). What can it be?
Would be cool if you can do a video of you planting one down and how many hollys can you have close together? I want plant Hollie’s instead of putting up a fence.
I'm in zone 10 and have this in a good-sized container located on the north side of my home and it is doing amazingly well. I haven't seen any flowers yet. It is about 4 feet high and I have some leaves that are over 12 inches across. I don't know if this had anything to do with using some Miracle Gro. Best part-shade plant that I have found so far. I do love the tropical look of this plant.
Fantastic video. ThanQ. 😍 Been obsessed with Camellias for a while. Just ordered a Camellia Japonica Volunteer. 🌸 Can’t wait to get it! Makes me giggle that I killed most house plants. 😳 But am now growing happy 🌹 And LOVING my wee garden! 🪴
