Hoʻokuaʻāina empowers youth to realize the meaning and purpose of their lives by helping them develop life strategies and skills through the cultivation of kalo and Hawaiian values-based coaching.
ʻAkahi a puka mai ka papa kālai pōhaku a me papa a ʻanakala Earl. He waiwai nō ka papa. He nui ka haʻawina i aʻo mai ai ʻo ʻAnakala. Mahalo nui au iā ia.
I use maia (banana) stalks for fertilizer apply direct to planted kalo as mulch no till in. If you live near the ocean, then I use limu opala (seaweed), our kupuna(elders) planted kupukupu ferns alongside side kalo other planted crops. The ferns were burnt in place, and then ashes were used to enrich and oxidate the soil. That's how fertilize. I hope this helps you.
I’ve never made this, but this is making me want to make it so bad 😂💜✨ I do have a half sister that’s Hawaiian! I wonder if I can do this with ubé(purple yam)
Thank you for teaching this. I learned it at my school from my kupuna teacher at my school. I noticed she learned this from your video! Keep up the good work.
Great whole-body workout planting taro like this. Used to plenty of it when growing up in Rarotonga. Excellent video and kia orana from Auckland, Aotearoa.
Idk if that boy is understanding what that man is saying to him or not. They don't even look related. The boy kind of has this look on his face like he has no clue what that man is saying to him. I seen that boy shrug his shoulders like he was't sure. Lol
He’s prob a very mixed kid with maybe very little Hawaiian in him. Or kawa’a is teaching a pure haole kid the ways of making poi. He’s a kumu so he teaches everyone of any race.
We get ours in bulk, but you can get at homedepot or amazon or other local place. It is the same process. We add it around the plant and then cover with mud. That seems to work best for us because of our water system and all the animals we have, especially the ducks!
Our kupuna did not use bone meal i am a kalo farmer and i still practice many of our kupuna ike passed down. Bone meal/ blood meal are bio hazardous materials that houses pathogens that cause sickness it is not natural and accumulated use actually damages soil. Aloha aina put more in to the aina then you take. Mahalo
You can get bone meal at like home depot or even amazon. We happen to order in bulk from a supply center because we are a farm, but our crew who grow at home get at the hardware store or amazon.
Awesome mahalo for sharing! I took board and stone with Uncle Earl and now get to feed poi to my family and baby every week with fresh kalo from Hoʻokuaʻāina.
