My mother just passed away and my wife found a zippo tape measure like these in her purse she used for measuring for curtains and blinds, it says comat inc blanchester ohio on it
I am very sorry to hear your mother passed away. My condolences to you and your family. That is very cool you have that Zippo tape measure to remind you of her. Was that a place she or someone in your family once worked at?
Damn! I didn't even realize that error. Thank you for pointing it out. I was thinking non-lighter items when I made this video. Will probably just delete this video soon. I record all my vids with just my phone in one take. I don't have any editing options.
It definitely is a real beauty. Turns out the soldier whose name is on it was from the same area of Wisconsin that my family stems from. He was the same age as my grandfather. Makes me wonder if they knew one another.
Oh, cool! May have to take you up on that. I'm waiting for the tool I need in order to rivet the spring in correctly. The one I currently have is too big. It's made for the flat and not the humped cam springs. Should be here by the end of the month.
I found an obituary for him. He was a military police sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, and later was a police officer. There are some notes in his hometown newspaper about letters he wrote home during the war. You can search for him in the Door County Library newspaper archive.
That is so cool!!! That is the same guy I had found as well!! Thank you for finding his actual obituary. For me, it's really cool to find out he was from Door County as well. My family stems from there. Next time I'm in Sturgeon Bay, I'll have to stop at their library and print out his obituary. He definitely saw a lot of action during WWII.
@@zippolyonsden1623 One of his letters from North Africa mentioned the Red Cross care packages they were getting from home with fruit, candy, and cigarettes. The whole letters aren't published in the newspaper, just little bits the parents must have told to the editor or a reporter. It sounds a lot like the stories in that Ernie Pyle book!
I've just been looking at the site Shorty mentioned. The guy who owned this Zippo may have actually known my Grandfather Lyons. They grew up in the same area and had to have attended school together.
came to see what the 40k sounding lighter I just ordered is like. I'd it classy as promised. And you have the same exact finish type and color!! My enamel is worn so I'm getting some sign enamel paint to redo it in royal blue or something.
Only true Zippo enthusiasts would appreciate such a replica because it would be the closest most of us will ever get to having or seeing a real Earnie Pyle Zippo. Kudos to Rileys66 for having the vision to do an awesome tribute lighter to preserve the historical meaning behind this Zippo.
Fully agree. I know I'll most likely never own an authentic one. Which makes this one a great addition to my collection. I, too, also appreciate that Riley's 66 and the Ernie Pyle Legacy Foundation decided to produce these Zippos. Ernie Pyle really is an icon of American WWII history.
Very cool they have some of his writings! They are definitely good reads! Filled with lots of info as to how it was during the war for the American troops.
Cool lighter. I got the brushed chrome version. I actually use mine. I believe in using the zippos for what they’re made for. The only ones I don’t use are the collectible ones zippo puts out every year
I'm thinking about getting the chrome version as well. I have about four lighters I rotate periodically for use at home or while out and about. One with a pipe insert the rest with regular inserts.
Fully understand your reasoning. I like the history associated with what it represents. Ernie Pyle's books have been really interesting to read. I know I'll never see a real 1945 one, much less own one, lol. So this is the next best thing for me. I'm always wasting my money, lol 😆
I disagree with ZF77O on this one. It is a tribute to one of the worlds greatest journalists who paid the ultimate price for doing his job. As zf77o is Canadian I can understand this one wouldn't have much meaning to him, but as an American I Love that they paid tribute to him. It's well deserved and worth every penny it cost to show due respect. 🇺🇸
Fully agree with all of what you wrote. I'm actually a bit surprised how many people I know never heard of Ernie. Even people who get into WWII history.
