I am reading a book called “Into the Groove” by Jonathan Scott about the early days of recording so have been googling, and these wonderful videos now showed up in RU-vid feed. I am amazed by the subtle sound quality of these old cylinders. One can really hear the inflection and timbre and emotions in these songs from so long ago. A reminder that people are people. How lovely that you posted these videos. Thank you!

A Victrola was what my great grandfather had to listen to- that was until he was 9 years old. In early 1928 he vividly remembered listening to a record of jass or some pop culture at the time. His father(born 1884) came in with an empty bottle of whiskey. Left with the Victrola and returned with a fresh bottle of whiskey. Only his memories of that beautiful device were all that were left. That he passed onto me.

I was raised by good folk born in 1915, and 1917. When they died in the early 2000s my grandfather(1947) and grandmother(1951) have done magnificently. The echo vibrating from the cylinder is absolutely wonderful. -Copernicus

Don’t you treat her with disdain. I’ll release the chains and she’ll deal the pain. The song is from the soul and it reeks punk rock of the late 1970s however it’s so much more than fitting it into a “criteria”

Was it actually the way cylinder recordings were reproduced or is this just your experiment?
@Miakhano
@Miakhano Год назад
He didn't answer, but I think that this is just modern experiment, because I see two devices connected with the cable. As far as i know, cylinders were copied only by molding technology back then. Also, this man told in the beginning of the video that he's about to do something for the first time ever.
@DaveTexas
@DaveTexas Год назад
Molding was used for mass-produced copies, but the earliest form of copying used a mechanical method that I can’t explain very well. The playback and recording machines were connected via a metal rod. As the playback caused the needle to track up and down in the groove, the metal rod transferred that up-and-down movement to the cutting head in the recording machine. It would look somewhat similar to this ‘tube’ system here, but the tube is reproducing the sound acoustically while the metal rod would reproduce the sound mechanically. I know that’s not a great description, but it’s the best I can come up with at the moment. I know the French Pathé company used this system for reproducing cylinders in their early years. I’m not sure whether Edison used it or not.

if you have the equipment you can do this as well. it took 3 years of constant experimenting to perfect my recording process. you need a 2 minute phonograph with reproducer, a recorder, a supply of blanks and a cylinder shaver. without the equipment you cant make cylinder recordings of any kind.
