Dennis Marks (1948-2015) was a writer, broadcaster and film maker who spent many years in television, the performing arts and journalism. He was also a persistent traveller with an interest in the culture and history of lands as diverse as Eastern Europe, Russia, West Africa and Central America.

Over the years he was a BBC television executive, the general director of English National Opera and with friends and colleagues he founded two independent production companies. He made six films with Michael Frayn, three major radio series, and wrote two books, on Joseph Roth and an introduction to Opera.

On this channel, dedicated to his work, you will find a selection of his films and radio programmes. Some of the series, such as 'All the Russias', include films by his colleagues, who have kindly given their agreement for their presentation here.

Wunderbar. This is gorgeous , preposterous and thought provoking .All the qualities that Vienna comprises, nourishes and exemplifies and yet also contradicts. A beautiful and erudite documentary that seeks to inform and encourage further enquiry rather than to shock or belittle.

A very important and interesting documentary, sadly ruined by unbearably loud music (& yes I was sporting headphones). 😒

Charming. I realised afterwards that the private clinic where I had a scan was where it was sited. I did wonder what used to be there in the past anyway because it’s almost small back roads and rounding a corner a small hospital.

Yikes. Poor UK. Culture vanishing even then. Not saying it's just as bad here in the US, but the UK is the size of one state here. :(

The range and subtlety of this puts modern documentaries to shame. You have to work to keep up. So much better than the current “Join me on my exciting quest to…” blah blah blah. “The Shock of the New” is also great and of the same era.

若き日のマエストロの指揮姿を拝めて大変興味深かった。「ワルキューレの騎行」に乗って突然日本公演のシーンになったのでびっくりしたw マエストロは現在の日本においても深い敬愛の対象です。

Mravinsky is my favorite conductor, his videos inspire me more than anything else. Is there somewhere that I could purchase DVDs of his conducting? I am not sure where to look.

The wildness and beauty of the inhospitable australian outbacks always interested me. This old charm rail video proved quite informative more about it's history. Many a time before the name GHAN railway in Australia had me thinking about it's peculiarity but never aroused in me the need to check the mystery behind its origin, and here in this wonderful doc i learnt about the GHAN history 😆.
