So interesting how many Africans in the states try to separate/differentiate themselves from Black Americans in the states.. but while in other countries claim to be us to receive respect. 🤔

“Korea is a very welcoming place”. No, they’re welcome to YOU. Because you’re visibly ethnically Korean. If you weren’t, you’d get the same experience most people get in Korea.

I'm the third kid and my parents tried to raise me the same way as my two older brothers. Pressuring them always worked while for me I didn't care about their wishes. They punished me hard for getting bad grades but it didn't face me. I had the mentality of "you want to punish me for bad grades? Watch me, I'm gonna get even worse grades because of that". Every kid is different, so I don't get why everyone thinks they can raise every kid the same way.

I just came across this interview. I find the comments interesting. As a Black American boomer who has worked across Africa, Pacific Asian and Latin America. It's interesting to read the comments on how he behaves as an African, not Korean. Africa is a huge continent with very distinct cultures and ethnicities. Why have people on the African continent diminished themselves as a continent of one and the rest of the world identifies as countries? He keeps referencing Korea, not Asia as his land of heritage. Yet, he's referred to accommodating an African character? How does one have an African character. Im American, but I dont say I have a character of the Americas.. Ethiopia is as different from Botswana as Korea is different from Cambodia.

I’m Korean living in the UK for over two decades. I must say I don’t agree with the part he talks about “dream”. When I was growing up in Korea, children would often say they want to be a president or something big when they grow up, but gradually as you get older, the dreams become more specific and realistic. You said working for Samsung or Kia is too “realistic” to dream, but I know too well how tight the gate to those big companies is. Those big companies provide a lot of benefits that most Korean job seeks would want, but to step into this, you have to beat many, many competitors, meaning you have to dedicate years of study, multiple degrees, scoring high levels of various language tests etc. In short, it takes a lot of hard work and money, and not everyone can afford it, or simply capable of. So it isn’t an easy, realistic dream as one might think. In the meantime, I saw a lot of young children say they want to be a police or even a bin man here in the UK. I worked as a teaching assistant for many years here, I remember thinking those kids’ dreams are so realistic as no one in the class said they wanted to be a lawyer or a judge, but rather something more realistic following their parents’ footsteps. Besides, GB still has royals and aristocrats, they follow the old class hierarchy here while as we have more freedom in Korea in that terms. The thing is, life isn’t black and white. I believe certain things are better here in the UK, but certain things are better in Korea. Every human society has goods and bads. We have racism here, we also have racism there. We have no such things as “perfect society” unfortunately, but then as a human being, we are not perfect, either.

Not really... They just say that because it's annoying to explain social rules to a tourist who probably won't listen anyways. You should still respect social etiquette of the country you're in. Just because someone is nice to your face doesn't mean they like you
