Hello there! My name is Bianca (she/her, ace/queer) and here on The Closet Historian I talk about pattern drafting, sewing, vintage fashion, crafting, and costuming.
Oh, it's geometry alright and you are fabulous at explaining how it all works. Whenever I draft a pattern, my old high school geometry teaching is laughing at me somewhere from beyond the grave because I swore to him that I would never use those math skills again! Well, little did I know that I would love making garments so much. This was a great lesson and I learned so much. Thank you!
Thank you for this! So much ❤ I have a question. Due to scoliosis the two sides of my body are vastly different... like regarding ribcage size and apex. Would I just measure them seperately? And draft two halves?
Anybody who hates your voice is wrong. Just factually incorrect. I love this look and would absolutely hate it on me lol (I can't with dolman sleeves, personally.)
With the influence of samurai armor, I bet a Darth Vader influenced garment wouldn't be a far stretch. As I was watching this, I was reminded of your star wars collection ❤
I’m really glad I ran across your video I’m soooo into making my own clothes I just never persuade it! I take my first sewing class October 7th it’s 4 sessions I’m super nervous but I really feel like I can do this and now I’m nervous about the patterns and things I’m scared of all the numbers and stuff but I want to make all my patterns out of old clothes I already have

I loved seeing how you were able to wrangle this bodice into a block! I really like the pinning seams/darts instead of sewing idea!! I've watched a couple of your other videos and will be returning for more. Thanks!!
Don't know if you answer questions, but here goes interested in the vinyl project and a client say it and fell in love for a corset she wants. What type of vinyl was used?
My great aunt had those shoes! She dressed so lovely everyday with perfectly curled hair❤ thank you for showing this flip through. I really enjoyed it and with I could order everything!!
This is brilliant using a simple bodice for a block! I love the idea of changing the opening to the front instead of the back to make it easier for try ons when fitting. Love your channel. Thank you!!
the singer 99k (especially as yours appears to be made post-1930s by the decals) is a low shank presser foot machine, so you can buy any low shank foot you'd like, most basic/domestic home sewing machines use low shank so you can use modern feet on your 99k, or if you buy a set, you can even get a snap on presser foot adapter to snap on various low shank feet attachments, though personally I dont like how chunky and plasticky it looks but sometimes its easier than finding specialty vintage feet,
So today while I was at work, my hubby told me one of my sewing machines was on our porch (my machine collection is stored in my little closet out there, along with my Christmas and Halloween decor) and I panicked that someone had stolen from us. But nothing was missing...I think my neighbor gave me their machine! I haven't looked too closely at it, but it is a Singer and it looks a lot like your 99k, including the simple base (without the latches or top, though). I thought you and the community might might enjoy/celebrate my luck with me. That coat is excellent btw ❤
This was so informative. I've been tinkering with sleeves and this is a great help. Thank you!! Would a darted sleeve be used in a blouse? Or would this mostly be for jackets etc?
Thank you! I have used this standard darted sleeve for button down shirts, adding a cuff on. But the blousier the sleeve, the bigger it becomes, the dart just gets eliminated. I use this darted sleeve on dresses all the time too though!
@@TheClosetHistorian thanks!! In regards to purchased patterns, would a sleeve dart help eliminate diagonal drag lines on the front of the sleeve? Despite sleeve cap changes I find some sleeve patterns still have that fabric fold. I really need to draft my own sleeve lol!
@@jgsawka I'm afraid I am not quiet enough of a sleeve expert to know 😅 I haven't used a commercial sleeve pattern since about 2007, so my knowledge on fixing them is seriously lacking!
I know this video is a couple of years old, but if you're still into making beaded insects/bugs, I thought I'd throw this out there. You mention issues with your 26 gauge wire being too soft for bug legs. Have you tried using half-hard or full-hard wire? It's considerably harder than the regular dead-soft wire that's normally used in jewelry making. I did a little googling and found that even sterling silver full-hard isn't terribly expensive--Fire Mountain has a 25 ft. spool for $25. There are some good wire companies out there like Parawire and Beadalon that make wires that are covered with something like lacquer to avoid metal-skin allergies. Anyway, I'm not a jewelry wire expert, just dabbled in it, but I found the half-hard and full-hard a bit difficult to work with being much stiffer than regular jewelry/craft wire. Hope it helps!
