I used to finish metal for a living, I polished brass, aluminum and stainless hand railing systems. If you take it to a 320 grit, then Go to a Sisal wheel with grey compound, then a cotton NU-Way with white compound, it will be a #8 mirror finish. The grey compound with that hard hemp (sisal wheel) easily take out 320, and the white takes off the grey scuffs. There is a cut and finish strokes on wheels. But a little acetone in a Tupperware with white compound and a cotton rag will allow you to blend the final polish if you have any leave off lines.
Any thoughts on Fiber Laser cutting. I'm wondering if the heat would affect the metal edges. The reason I ask is because I have a company that will laser cut batches a couple of miles from my house.
glad I stumbled across this video. Been trying to figure how to etch magnacut for a min at the shop. never thought to leave it in for an hour. Had had issues with heat spots due to the heat treat and hot spot from the flat grinder. Going to give this a try later on in the week
Kind sir, need your help regarding understanding how to set up angle on the bevel jig to obtain the desired height of the bevenl instead of adjusting it constantly making it look like its convex
Between steps at the polishing station, I tend to wipe the blade with some acetone. This was a habit formed in the late 1970's in my Grandfather's shop. Before that, they used isopropyl alcohol. You are doing a great job of making the process look easy and making incredible knives! Good job!
36-120-220-320. Then grey compound on a sisal wheel, then white compound on a nuway cotton wheel. This works for aluminum, brass, stainless. Also you are limiting the use of your wheels by having them mounted to a bench. You need them on a pedestal so you can work from behind to use the top of the wheel and all the debris will fly forward and away. Also you can polish long pieces in the top of the wheel and use gravity as a helper. Lastly on your technique, there is a cut stroke (going against the wheels rotation) and the leave off polish stroke, (going the same direction as the wheel). There is an art to polishing metal. I’m used to be a metal finisher at Livers Bronze CO. In KCMO. I’ve polished lots of steel, brass, copper and aluminum. I wish I could come to your shop and show you a few tips.
Here’s a pro tip put little disposable plastic shower caps on your buffing wheels when they’re not in use so they don’t collect other compounds and dust and grit from your shop
Sorry to comment on such an old video; I have some thin 1095 that I've already quenched and tempered and it still has a minor warp. Can I run it on another temper cycle (two 1hr cycles at 400*F already) to attempt this?
Wonderful video! If I didn't know I wanted one before, I absolutely want one now! How do you cool off your blade while you are sanding? Are you dunking the front of the jig with the knife into water? Thank you for your information! 😁
Hello, wonder if you can help .i did an Alabama Damascus 1000 then 2000 then did 1 hr strong fresh coffee etch . I’m I supposed to feel the texture of the masculine after coffee etch? Thank you. Really enjoy your videos
I don’t really see any of the things that you talked about making the KMG grind any better than the origin blade maker my question is have you ever had a problem with tension on the OBM grinder
Thanks for the info! Curious what compound progression i should use when using the standard polishing compounds..ie black/ brown/ green/ white/ blue..etc. after hand sanding to 1000g? Thanks
Great info for everyone. I’ve always been told to go 20% more than you think you need before changing grits. So 10 minutes at a grit and you think you’ve got it done, do another 2 minutes. Seems to work. My biggest problem with hand sanding is the tip, I always catch it and rip my paper. Other than just strokes towards the tip, any suggestions? Thanks for a lot of great advice
Watched this when it was 2days old. Went straight to Beaumont metal works and tried to use the coupon towards the kmgtx and the $650 off coupon was already expired. Only 2days! I’m afraid that cost them a customer! Otherwise, great video as usual.
