Jon feeders are 3% and branch CKTs are 2%. I always VE as per this percentage. the reason being is the feeders usually travel long distances with bigger load at the end however branch circuits shorter distances are usually smaller load like receptacles lights etc.
@theelectricaldepartment
@theelectricaldepartment 12 дней назад
Ah that makes sense….i do wonder tho, doesn’t the feeder to the panel have the advantage of always being calculated at 3 phase, thus typically not as much of an issue as the single phase branch circuits? If you hold the branch circuits to 2%, you’re very limited in distance for single phase runs.

@@sharkblade3 Yeah because for some reason I thought that would be the best method to avoid someone having 15cd and 75cd checked off at the same time. I was trying to avoid double coverage, but honestly its such a minor and obvious error if the user ends up doing that. Also for your other issue, I haven't really had a problem selecting the invisible part of the element when I have it turned off. When the coverage is on though, it is a little cumbersome to click around it.

Do you ever have issues when you can select the model elements that are not visible? For example, the 15 cd coverage area is set not Not Visible but you can still click in the model? I have the issue when I use model lines but I did find a work around for it.

Americans will not have good quality engineering until they start using metric system... feet, inches, fractions, etc., are very inaccurate, and when using them on material length, the error is accumulated massively. Meter is a NATURAL, consistent and absolute unit... is coming from 100cm... and 1 cm is the diameter of a drop of water... Egyptians were using it... also the Royal Cubic of the Egyptians comes from Meter/Centimeter... then relationship between cubic meter to water weight/kgr... etc Setting AutoCAD or Revit in millimeters means that every unit of error if any, would be a millimeter, and not an Inch (25.4 mm)...

@@theelectricaldepartment your answer implies that you're not either one 😀 linking SLD with model/schedule is a great idea! your ElectroBIM seems useful for MEP design with Revit. however I think it's still far to be used in a real/big electrical power design project. your arc-flash calculation is not applicable at all.

@@anhngg6198 Oh I'm not arguing with any of your points. That's exactly what I use it for, MEP Design, so its perfect for that scenario. We're still using SKM for the main power calcs and drawing the rest of the SLD in CAD due to the need for double ended switchgears, substations, central DRUPS and campus MV loops. The thing that separates the workset in the filter tab in VG is its security, especially if working with other modelers, so the security of work will correspond to the owner of the service, scope or trade only, that divides the project from different areas in construction but beware of relinquishing owned workset cause sometimes it cost time delays if someone didn't relinquish his/her own element

Do you need a MCB Distribution panel if you have a main disconnect? Can you just run straight from main disconnect to M.L.O and shut off from the disconnect? Why the need for M.C.B?
@theelectricaldepartment
@theelectricaldepartment 3 месяца назад
If your disconnect is fused or protected in some way upstream, then certainly you can go from the disconnect switch directly into a MLO panel. That’s actually what we do for a few clients that have policies against hot work or if you have a need to cut down on fault currents by using J Type fuses in the disconnect switch.

It’s been a few years since I did a render with Enscape, I should revisit that. If I remember correctly, you should be able to render using the ies files loaded into the lighting fixture family. I know you can cycle the time of day in Enscape and see the building at noon vs nighttime and the lights should illuminate correctly.

This may be a good workflow for Lighting Fixture families, but these parameters are created and added to your project as Project Parameters. When it comes to Mechanical Equipment or other categories that can have many different Schedules, this workflow would add all these parameters to every family even if they are not needed which in turn bloats the project/families. There are tools that can push parameters to families without checking this box. What about parameters that have the same name but have a different GUID?
@mep_guy
@mep_guy 3 месяца назад
Jon added the parameters as a "Shared Parameter" NOT a project parameter. This will add the value to all of the families with that category (in this case, light fixtures). So yes, if you used this technique with mechanical equipment, it would add to all families that are mechanical equipment. If the parameter is type based shared parameters, you would only see them when you go to the edit types dialogue box. If you are managing an entire department and your typical workflow involves downloading manufacturer's content, then this method is much better than having your employees using plugin/apps to push parameters to families every time they bring them in. This is by far the best method for that workflow. Just tell staff to edit families inside the schedules. Who cares if there are extra parameters in each family.

@johnfitzpatrick4745
@johnfitzpatrick4745 4 месяца назад
Thanks for covering this topic, Jon! I haven't used ElumTools in a few years, but I recall there being a few issues: 1) The calculations don't work properly if your space heights aren't right. By default, I think the spaces get created at 8' in the model so you have to spend time adjusting those. 2) If the BIM model is not done well by the architect, then it can tank you calculations (regions not being bounded properly). 3) Adding the calculations to a space created a family that was visible on the plan, and you would have to create a filter or workset to make sure those got hidden. 4) Trying to use it in a model with phasing was tricky due to wall/furniture/equipment visibility in the 3D view. It's a powerful tool, but the level of fiddly things made it less efficient than the other options (Visual, AGI32, web-based tools provided by the major manufacturers). If ElumTools has improved on the issues above, then it may be worth trying again.

Bro I've been checking on updates to this workflow all the time, thanks for making the vid. I'd much prefer to own a Meta Quest than a Vision Pro, but wasn't gonna buy either til I knew if they supported this workflow. Questions: 1. Can you pin the model in real space and walk around it, so as to project a proposed model over real world existing conditions? 2. Do you have a Meta Quest and know if it supports opening models natively (GLB/USDZ)? 3. And further, does Simlab export to GLB as well? 4. Does Simlab export linked models or only your content?
@theelectricaldepartment
@theelectricaldepartment 4 месяца назад
I actually want to pick up a Quest 3 to see the difference. I think Enscape works with that but not the Vision Pro. At the moment I haven’t figured out a way to get into the model. I can only view it from the outside. I REALLY want to pin it in an open parking lot and walk around the floor of the virtual building. I’m going to keep trying different things until I can do something along those lines. SimLab exports whatever you see in the 3D view, so linked stuff and things in your own model. I wonder if it would export CAD underlay’s like a site plan….haven’t tried yet.

@GABSPACE
@GABSPACE 4 месяца назад
@@theelectricaldepartment Good to know on all fronts. I think the big hurdle right now is that the Quest doesn't natively have a file browser. Sideloading is well documented so it's not that it'd be a problem, but finding a viewing app is scarce. Recent Reddit research suggests Open Brush as it imports GLB and has passthrough support. Any experience with that? PS SimLab looks like it has a standalone GLTF exporter apparently.

Thank you for the videos! I recently purchased the MEP families course on MEPGuy and have a question that was not covered in the course or other videos I've seen. Is there a way to show a motor load classification and heating load classification on a panel schedule when a single air handler family is connected to a panel? So the panel schedule would reflect AHU-1 with a total kVA rating for each phase, but under the load Classification section, the correct VA ratings for Motor and Heating would displays.
@theelectricaldepartment
@theelectricaldepartment 4 месяца назад
That’s a great question! Air handlers can get very complicated and you’re right, different loads within the air handler should have different demand factors applied. What I’ve done is use multiple elements on the same circuit so that each element can have its own classification. The motor would have your motor demand, the heating will have its heating demand, and if you get even larger AHUs, you’d have receptacles, lighting and even UV loads. On the panel schedule, you can still just have AHU-1 shown, but the loads will come into the schedule with their own classification. I would use the electrical connector family and have multiple elements per AHU.
@TimMunro-vs7ec
@TimMunro-vs7ec 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the reply! What I have been missing is actually on the electrical circuiting side of things more than the mechanical equipment side. When equipment is selected and powered, the circuit is based on the primary connector. To get the secondary connector added to the circuit, right click the circuit and choose "Add to Circuit" and it will behave how I am asking. Very basic and simple stuff that I completely missed!

whats a bus plug?
@theelectricaldepartment
@theelectricaldepartment 4 месяца назад
There’s a product called a busway that is a solid conductive device that takes the place of several conductors. It is typically used for high amperage feeders from one distribution to another, or sometimes as a distribution pathway for large amounts of power. Think of a thick metal box with 4 or 5 copper busses inside to transfer power. There are then plugs that you can plug into these busways to ‘tap’ power from the busway. Great for when large equipment moves around on a production floor. Maybe they need 800A in one location for 2 years but then they may move it 20 feet down the assembly line later. Run the busway over the whole assembly line and the plug can plug in at multiple locations.
