Up to you to control the earth, not the earth to control you. This is a difficult perspective for me. I feel as if I am the earth, on some level, but also of the sky, and my task is to walk and be in harmony with the earth, to allow expression to flow through me, be solid like a mountain, but be with the clay with great respect as something much more ancient than me. Clay, as a form, as an essence, as an energy, as potential for beauty.
Ooh I was scratching my head wondering what I was doing wrong after centering and I think I may be doing everything you've mentioned. Time to get back to the wheel. Thank you so much!
I've been throwing for a few months w/ inconsistant results as to centering, etc. Your videos have helped a lot as you've included some hints that worked for me that the teachers I've had didn't mention. I encourage you to make more videos please.
Hey Tommy, thanks so much for your comments.I certainly have more videos to come. Keep at it, and it's always good to watch other people throwing. I still learn a lot from watching other potters at work. Cheers Njalikwa
Hi Jennifer thankyou so much. I hope the students enjoy the experience nothing better than incorporating ceramics in an art practice. Cheers Njalikwa 🙏🙏🙏
Hi Njalikwa, can I ask - I think you mentioned you were left handed and it seems as though the wheel spins anticlockwise. So if I am right handed, shoukd I be spinning my wheel clockwise, as I've always spun it anticlockwise 🙈. Have I been doing it wrong all this time?
I'm right-handed so anti-clockwise. If you're sitting at the wheel, imagine it as a clock most of your work happens between 4 and 5 o'clock as a right-hander for left handers, most work occurs between 7 and 8 o'clock. Remember that aside from opening up, your dominant hand is I on the outside of the forms you're throwing Cheers Njalikwa
Excellent! Found it really useful & clear. I haven't had lessons yet, just watched hundreds of RU-vid videos over the past 3 years and this is the best one I've seen so far! ❤
Sure and nice to hear fromyou, basically, it's a piece with underglaze/ slips. On the inside is a matt clear glaze on the outside. I've applied a textured glaze. The upper section of glaze has about 5% silicon carbide added to the glaze, making it bubble and blister. This is then ground back to reveal the slip underneath. I'll be doing glazing down the track and will incorporate some of the glazes I work with. Cheers Njalikwa
On throwing off the hump; when I throw cup shaped forms off the hump many of them end up with S-cracks in the bottom even though I try to compress the bottom as I would in throwing from a ball of clay. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?
Hey George definitely can be an issue. The key things I do is really compress and work the base and also watch that when you cut them off the hump you don't cut the base too thin and watch there's no water or slurry in the base. Hope this helps cheers Njalikwa
I have experience doing ceramics but not doing throwing on the pottery wheel. So far this is the best video I found with the step by step. I'm going to try these steps, and keep you posted with my experience ❤
I see you’re a relatively new channel, but I envision you’ll be around for a long time. Everything about your videos is stellar. Your pace, your quality of audio, and of course, your detailed instructions, far surpass most of the other ceramic artists here on RU-vid. My only complaint is that there aren’t more videos to binge watch! 😉. (Also, your aesthetic is right up my alley. Would love to learn more about your glazing practices).
Hi Doreen thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you've joined the channel and I will be adding more videos in the next year or two so please stay tuned. This will include glazing techniques that you may find helpful. Cheers Njalikwa
Thankyou so happy to hear the video was helpful ....we all have different techniques its just a matter of finding which bits may suit your throwing style cheers Njalikwa
" ... and enjoy the process! " . After watching their two videos I have a feeling Zinogo Studio's channel is going to be a great one. Also, the excellent visuals combined with flawless audio matches and exceeds the ceramics being presented. Thank you for sharing and I am glad I found your channel. ( BTW, that audio transition while fading to black for transition from intro to action segment tell tails of a multi-discipline artist 😉 )
By far the best video on the subject. Clear, descriptive, intentionally disciplined within the task at hand while mildly entertaining. The gem is the good ol' teaching with repeating trick. I learned a lot. Thank you for this.
Hi, Your pottery is beautiful! Thank you so much for your video. Your instructions are awesome. I’m going to try throwing your mug this afternoon. I’m looking forward to more of your videos in the future. Thank you again, Pam
