I started Cardboard Kingdom to help catalog my journey back into collecting. While doing so if I can bring anyone else joy along the way that is an added bonus.
Growing up I collecting a lot of the original Wizards of the Coast Pokémon cards, but like most of you I didn't think anything of it and grew out of it. At some point my parents threw away or donated my cards and I didn't give it a second thought.
Fast forward 20+ years to December of 2023 when some friends in a group text message started talking about Disney's new TCG Lorcana. Disney creating a TCG and the idea of opening packs again, immediately sounded appealing, so I decided to give it a shot. I grabbed my daughter and we ran up to target, got about 20 Lorcana packs, and ripped away... and the rest is history.
We now are growing our collection daily and hope to share as much of that as possible.
Please share your thoughts and advice with us as we begin on this adventure, thank you!
also what do you think about inklands rn? I have a box I got for 85. Not sure if I should just keep it or see if I can get something out of it, resell and buy cards i want from set 1
Chapter 1 will be restocked at tournaments and special events for the next year but no wider reprint. It’s a draw for attending and get cards in players hands. Will keep the flagship product a chase / buoyed without crashing whilst capping pricing from ludicrous levels. All planned by ravensberger. My theory anyway. A reprint would take sales and attention from a future set
Your numbers for the let it go are probably gonna be way off as well. They were giving out more then just the top 128 people. If there was a tie in score for the final place in the 128 with people who didnt place top 128 they still got the card. So i think in chicago there was like 160 people thay got the card or something like that. And that was only a 1k person event.
I hope they reprint set 1 to the ground lol. Not a fan of resellers hoarding the product for a profit on the backs of the people who are actually trying to just play the game and grow the community. Alot of people in lorcana, this is their first tcg and arent used to how expensive some of this stuff can be and prices making product out of reach can really turn new players away. Disney themselves have done very little to advertise lorcana. Like i shouldnt mention the name lorcana and people not know what it is. So imagine once they actually push the game with advertising... there will be a massive influx of players looking for product. U dont think they will reprint early sets at that point?
I def don't recall saying not to buy her at $8, I do prefer to wait as these cards will likely come down as more people get their hands on them next week at retail. If you can ever be ahead of the META and can see what's coming (I can't), you should act accordingly!
I agree the Troves are awesome for initial storage, but for me they just aren't the best for a real long-term solution. I prefer the four-row boxes with xeno-skin on the outside and magnetic covers. The right ones on Amazon are absolute tanks and can hold basically all my cards from four different sets at a time. Game changer when it comes to in-person deck building, highly recommend.
There's no need for reprint set 1. They did it because there was no product on shelves. There's 3.5 sets easily available now. I would be surprised if Ravensburger reprints.
@@elijahdekuyter6810 ya it will be tough to top that one no doubt. I think when you compare the population of Disney fans vs magic fans you can see it happening, but at the end of the day it’s going to come down to how well Ravensburger grows Lorcana.
I guarantee that Ravensburger is sitting on a warehouse of Chapter 1 still, and I expect a reprint in the future. They will keep the secondary prices where they want secondary prices. Do not think Disney is not completely aware of the secondary market.
@@CardboardKingdom I played magic during 3rd edition. I absolutely sucked that you needed $500 cards to be a top competitor at the first tournaments. I think Ravensburger wants that first set to be available for years, because it has so many staples.
Hey Bud I've been watching your vids for awhile. I am a magic player, but I don't hate Lorcana, in fact I love both. I just don't like that you are categorizing MTG as the ones hating on Lorcana. Keep on Keeping
He said that of the different card game fandoms, it’s the Magic community he is hearing negativity the most. He’s not saying every Magic player feels that way. Hell, some of the best Lorcana players come from Magic.
@@jazzflute That's what I'm getting at. I like both games, Ive been engraved in MTG for about 15 years now, but also enjoy the aspects of lorcana. I just don't think it's fair to say a majority of players complaining about lorcana are magic.
Ravensburger is literally giving a handful of $100 cards to LGS's running organized play every set, after giving the LGS's exclusive sales for 2 weeks post release. This Ruby guy sounds like a smuck who gets clicks by stirring controversy. If he has problems getting product at any shop, then that would be because the shop isn't providing doing the paper work in a timely manner to get product. Also, Ravensburger has stated that this set will see a requirement from stores of actually logging melee games for weekly league, if that store wants to get a set championship kit.
Yeah, Rudy does have some decent insight from time to time, but he also says a lot of dumb stuff. And a lot of what he says is usually meant to either throw people off or intentionally cause uncertainty/fomo. He's a very polarizing figure in the RU-vid TCG space.
Would like to agree but I don't think it will be the most valuable at all tbh.. But it would be awesome! You're definitely right about being set for life if you get it haha
I bought my First Chapter booster boxes at $165 it’s impossible for me to lose money because I didn’t give in to FOMO when they were $400 a box. Picked up a sealed case and 2 loose boxes and some sleeved packs. I’m bullish on this TCG it’s selling like crazy on eBay and TCGPlayer
I just bought a cgc 9 diablo for less than a raw card on eBay. I guess i'm going to have to do a video on how to crack cases, since i want to play with it.
It would make sense for Worlds to be in the Spring, but if we assume it’ll take place at Wide World of Sports, there’s very few free weekends at Disney during that time due to cheer, dance, showchoir, and other competitions. It’ll be interesting when they choose to hold it.
I love the idea of a new tcg and especially one with the power of Disney behind it but I’m still hesitant because I went heavy heavy into metazoo only to get burned. Kept all my metazoo on the off chance it bounces back back I’m not hopeful
I am sorry to hear that jcat and I completely understand the reservation. There is a significant difference in the value of using the most valuable and recognizable IP in the world like Disney, and creating something out of thin air like Metazoo to help back a TCG. I am a firm believer in Lorcana, but I can't see the future. If you decide to jump on the bandwagon with us, we welcome you with open arms!
I'm not sure if my perspective is maybe weird... As far as what I buy: Ultimately I buy what I want to collect, regardless of how I think it'll do in the future. I'll only buy what I either want to collect personally or play with. For sealed, I'll buy packs for sealed events and whatnot but otherwise would only buy sealed to keep sealed, which isn't something I'm hugely into other than if I could find cheap first chapter stuff. I do/would buy a box here and there to do a draft or something fun with friends, but I don't buy sealed to try to pull specifics. For selling: Right now, basically nothing. I don't spend anything on hobbies that isn't more or less "fun" money. So, I never find myself where I feel pressured to sell something from any of my hobbies - which I think is important. If I end up not being interested in something then I might sell it off later and reinvest that into whatever my hobby is at the time (ie. sold one of my old guitars to buy a camera, etc). Here's a weird thing that maybe people disagree with... With modern cards (pokemon, Lorcana, etc), if I want a graded version - for the most part I'll just buy it with the grade I want. 9's and lower in modern are basically the cost of the raw card, and the time and money involved with PSA or others is enough that I don't think I'd spend the money on the gamble unless I had a ton of cards I wanted to grade. But I see grading as a version of gambling on packs almost, you're spending money on a card you already have in hopes it might get a 10 and be worth more - and if it's not you've spent money and time on nothing lol. :./
I strongly agree with collecting 9's... the back is a smidge OC so it got a 9, but the front is flawless? Ya I will pay below raw price for that card everyday :D
I look at it as the same as the stock market, right now we have an opportunity to buy into Apple when they started. How many of us wished our parents did and they didn’t. Now we have that chance with lorcana, I wouldn’t sell any cards right now, it’s a buyers market right now and it’s awesome,I’m hanging onto everything and will grow my collection over the years
I agree. I think there is potential for explosive growth of the game in the next year or couple years, and that would multiply the value of these early cards. The worst case I can imagine is the game plateaus, and that would mean the value of these early cards would be constant. Therefore I think investing in Lorcana this early is high reward low risk. I think we can hold for a long time without any worries.
This is going to get crazy and it will happen quick....just watch how much Lorcana cards will be at the major shows in the next 1-2 years.....we are all very lucky we got in early....
I've got 2 Elsa's coming back graded and will sell one and keep the other...depending on grade....and I'm grading all Enchanted and all Cold Foil Legendary cards
Ravensburger has really stepped it up with Shimmering Skies, the card quality is so much better in Set 5 and I really like the new designs of the Enchanteds and Legendary cards! Can't wait to see what new sets are coming out.
I think a lot of people just want this game to fail. It's true that the market is low right now and it doesn't look great but I was surprised to see my locals attendance triple since into the inklands. They filled up Saturday draft and had to make another draft on Sunday. I talked to a worker there and he said they sold out of cases instantly for shimmering skies (I picked up one case from them). Ursula set champs was packed. DLCs are selling out quick. This game has a dedicated following for sure. They just need a simulator again tbh. Love the vids man keep it up!
13:47 In my mind the „why would I sell, in X years…“ is an easy way to never sell because of psychological pressure. To come back down on earth you „just“ need to figure out „what will be enough for me“. Of course - I want to sell as high as possible- of course later could be even more. But if you can say - yes, later it will be more, but right now is enough for me, let’s start the next deal. This takes a lot of pressure away. At least for me
I hope this mindset can help. Back then, I did crypto for some time. In the beginning it was extremely stressful. But later this mindset kept me sane and relaxed 😎
Excited for the inclusion of Pixar (even more excited that they announced The Black Cauldron and Pocahontas by 2026). However, I do hope they only stick to animated foray, and do not include live action franchises like Star Wars and Marvel. I think that would just ruin Lorcana…
I'd love to see Star Wars and Marvel in Lorcana. Forget about the "live action" aspect, think that both IPs have had multiple cartoons, so it's easy to imagine those characters in the Lorcana style because it's somewhat similar to Clone Wars / Fox Animation.
I feel you assume Disney will stop printing at one point so my question is why do you think this? If even the first chapter keeps being printed in 10 years then what would be the point to collect when there is no rarity?
You are correct they could in theory print every set forever, but I changed my perception on the topic when I read the interview their CEO did with ICV2. Search Stephane Madi Lorcana Interview and you should see it. The way he talks about production and distribution gave me confidence in the game from a collectors POV.
I'm hoping if they reprint the first chapter they do it with a special stamp or logo on the card similar to the Pokemon 25th anniversary cards. Then the cards would be accessible but the first prints would keep value.
Word, I got into Lorcana specifically because I wanted to set up a TCG collection that my daughter will enjoy in a few years and into the future. I'm all-in on Lorcana from a collecting perspective.
Exactly the same! I'm in Lorcana for the long haul, collecting, going to the Challenges, Set Championships, etc. Selling all my MTG stuff and misc other games to fund it.
Great video. Agree on the pops. I will say I feel that grading PSA 10 % have taken a bit of a turn. May be something to watch out for. As far as Star Wars is concerned, or Marvel for that matter, I could see Mickeys with Vader Hats or Spiderman Goofy etc... Super excited about Pixar as that fits the game immediately.
Dont forget Star Wars which is also owned by Disney. It may not be the same as it was prior to the purchase of Disney but its still an IP owned by them with huge potential. Imagine the old Star Wars nostalgia these cards would bring for people who were fans of the originals
I prefer booster boxes because the price per pack is so much cheaper, but I do keep 2 troves from each set. One to keep sealed for my collection one to part with down the road.
I think Ravensburger should focus on character Enchanted cards rather than other things like locations. It's a big letdown if you pull a location Enchanted since it's already a difficult pull rate
Due to currently living in Korea, i cant go to an LGS, so i have to wait until the 23rd. When do you think I should order shimmering skies and whats a reasonable price in your opinion? I want to get a case. Im trying to balance buying at a decent price and my excitment to buy asap (i want the cards now!). Appreciate your thoughts.
@@japhetrodriguez4245 at the end of the day it’s always better to wait, but what fun is that!?!? I would get some for the 23rd and then give it a few weeks/months and buy whatever else you want!
they are both relatively hard, set champs being harder, but care free is only like 60% GEM MT which for chapter one is pretty bad. Stitch I would probably guy a graded copy, especially if you can find one sub $800ish, I think that's a steal. Surfer I am fine going either way tbh.
@@CardboardKingdom Cool. I have a 10 of each, was thinking of picking up a second just to have. Not buying to count on them increasing, but just want an extra in case they ever become valuable enough where I'd be irresponsible to not sell - I'd want to still keep one lol. Seems like I could send offers and possibly get 4x raw for the cost of one 10 for rockstar, but unsure. They've been dropping down to around 800 in auctions and sometimes a bit cheaper.
@@CardboardKingdom 800 for a Stitch just beacuse it's "graded"?? The most I paid was 500 for a raw Enchanted Elsa. No way I'd waste 800 on a stitch. For that much I could buy one of each raw and still save money. Except I'd buy cards with a lot more potential. I swear this community deserves being scammed by grading companies.
