Julie fowlis does a really awesome 5 part version of the cock and the hen called "The Cat and the Dog" on her track "Brògan Ùr Agam a Nochd", you gotta give that a listen if you love slip jigs.
My tin whistle has been chilling on my shelf for a couple years. Thank you for reigniting my hope for learning to play well. I love Irish tunes, the way they are often a relatable combo of sad subjects and happy tunes, or just about having a good time, or about historical events. They’re all really fascinating to me, and the tin whistle is the instrument that always gets me excited. Gonna try to work on these ornaments and scales. Thanks for such a clear explanation.
Hey Sean!! Can you do a video with ocarinas and the similarities and differences. I've played them since I was a young child and feel like you would absolutely shred on one
Tha comparaison is too short I think. Otherwise, you would have known that if you're a bit of a wet player, you can't play a whole tune with the Killarney.
I'm from NYC, now Allentown, PA. Are you of Irish descent? I'm practically the least Irish guy I know (mostly Austria -Jewish Lutheran). I love the whistle.
It also can make some notes weaker, because it moves the nodes of the sound wave inside the tube. Low D can however be stronger when the cork is a bit further out. For the handful of flutes I made myself - I'd say the cork position might be one of the most important aspects of intonation and sound of a flute. Some combination of largest possible holes and cork as far out as possible without messing up the octave - that's what makes for a lot of "oomph" for the low notes. But the flute maker knows best so... Wherever the maker says the cork should go is probably best.
That's interesting. I've never been able to hear much difference on my flute on 1st and 2nd octaves (a big hole Siccama system). I suspect the biggest effect would be on the 3rd octave, so for trad players improving the low notes as you suggest is a good compromise.
Glad to hear it worked out for you! Dental care is important bros. I got mine cleaned by the dentist yesterday for the first time in 30 years and I feel like a new man.
Actually, i know how to play a bamboo flute unfortunately my 3 bamboo flute mouthpiece cracked due to continued use that why i wanted to try using a different kind of flute
Can't even hear a difference between modern and pro. That high B on the modern is horrible. But why is it the vintage ones are always so much better sounding? It might be partly psychological. Still, I've been looking to get my hands on a vintage Generation for a while and can't find one anywhere.
Dude, those Bs are so out of time on the new ones it's insane! It's weird, because the tone is nearly identical, but the intonation is so much better on the old ones.
I can't hear any difference between 1980s and pro. The modern feadog, which is what I have, is the worst imo - too airy, and not in good way. I think the fast notes might mask a lot of the tonal qualities between the pro and 1980s though so would be interesting to hear some slower pieces on those.
