I’m from Canada and faintly remember all those early Dragon Ball dubs airing on YTV. I 100% remember watching that English GT dub with the English OP. When DBZ aired here, we got a different OP from the US “Rock the Dragon” OP. I don’t think there was any way to enjoy “uncut” DBZ other than home releases and buying expensive TV packages that have US channels (w/ Toonami/Adult Swim)
To this day I am still not sure if I saw the Harmony Gold dub when I was a kid. I would have been 4 years old when it was aired, so definitely far enough back to be in the hazy memory zone. And I remember watching Speed Racer and Voltron around that time, too. But I also remember later stuff in Dragonball that Harmony Gold wasn't involved in. Basically my memories of Dragonball are a scrambled up mess up until I watched the Frieza Saga on Toonami, at which point DBZ became a staple of pop culture.
I know DBZ fans get frustrated at the inconsistency with the dub for the longest time, but as someone who always enjoyed the original show more, DBZ being the testing grounds for the dubbing process led to DB having a perfect english dub
There's no way in hell Vegeta said "Mondo Cool" in the original Japanese line 😂 Yet they kept it in both dubs Still, Ocean Dub will always be my favorite way to watch the first 67 episodes of DBZ. Wish they were uncut tho 😢
In Latin America, the first dubbing of Dragon Ball was based on that dubbing of "Zero and the Magic Dragon" with the same names changed, the recordings are still preserved and it is possible to see it, obviously in Latin Spanish, but with that you can make a idea of what it was like
My introduction to Captain Harlock was a pirated english dub of endless odyssey that was available on RU-vid when I was a teenager, barely into my anime phase at that point. Had Lex Lang as the voice of Harlock and I was obsessed with that one for years even though i only understood part of the overall storyline before I realised there was more Harlock content out there. 10 years later and I'm now studying Japanese full time ❤
I remember going to Tulum once and Dragonball Super was on TV but it was the English dub with Spanish subs (probably mostly so tourists could still watch and even learn some Spanish)
The revenge of cooler/Greatest rivals movie aired in Philippines in ABS-CBN(channel 2) aired in sunday evening at 9:00 pm( if I remember it correctly). The movie was my introduction to Dragonball. After this movie, another local network in RPN 9 aired Dragonball Z and later the OG dragonball. Z aired during sunday afternoon and dragonball was weekdays afternoon. Both series went into hiatus and then GMA 7 picks it up. It would air dragonball and Dragonball Z weekdays on prime time schedule. Z would immediately start on namek saga. It was weird cause I only know Goku as a grown up. So when I saw kid goku, I thought he's a separate character. @14:33 I remember that movie, it was bundled with Yuyu Hakusho ova, The golden seal(Ghost fighter in Philippines)
God bless your hard work. "super cyan blast" has been a meme in my friend circle for years and now we finally have a high quality version of it. thanks dude
I was watching Dragon Ball Z on Amazon Prime and it was fine but some episodes had different voices like Krillin, Vegeta, and others it sounded way off
As a speaker of Japanese, I don't understand why people like you insist on having to use the Japanese terms if all you do is absolutely butcher it. This video is language cancer.
I can hear some misinformation about the ocean dub they did not keep the original Japanese music but instead they got Ron Wesserman/ Shuki Levy to compose the music for that dub
The Wonder Boy / Adventure Island / Whomp 'Em family tree sure is an oddity. Kinda wish they got Master Higgins into Wonder Boy Returns or Remix and call it "Wonder Boy in Adventure Island". Would've been a fun way to present that history.
It would be hard for Konami to bring back the Adventure Island games, since Master Higgins was based on a real person. They're too cheap to pay royalties for his likeness. Plus, I think the current owners of Wonder Boy are paying more attention to the series to the point where even the first game is being acknowledged by them.
