Sound Asylum Live is a channel dedicated to helping beginner sound guys and musicians learn how to make their BAR PA KICK BUTT! Many of us do NOT have thousands and thousands of dollars to buy the best PA System out there so we simply have to make the best with what we have. I will teach you "HOW TO MAKE YOUR BAR PA KICK BUTT".

This channel is NOT for those who have the privilege to mix on the best of the best Line array systems or million dollar systems and have mixers with every tool known to man onboard. We all have to start somewhere so it is my goal to keep it practical & simple here. Ready? Let's Rock!

I'm interested in a pair of these RCF 8004AS subs, and am currently comparing the size / output with the Danley TH118XL. Does anyone have experience in using one over the other? Low frequency extension + output of a pair of these vs one TH118XL.

@soundasylumlive4421 2 месяца назад
Sorry for the delay. The last two weeks have been brutal... I can't really say much on the TH118XL's. I am around them quite a bit and they go off to churches mostly to be installed and by the time they are tuned by some other staff I work with, they just seem okay to me.... nice and smooth. I have yet to take some out to a live gig and mix a rock band through them like I have the 8004's. I can only say that you really can't go wrong with a pair of 8004's. They will do the job. They are powered as well and the TH118's require an amp and an amp rack and DSP on them. So with that said, that is going to drive the cost up. The 8004's are portable with great castors on them and it is just a really good single 18 sub. However, if cost isn't an issue, you can't go wrong with either one. Hope that helps. I wish I had more time on the TH Danley's.

@soundasylumlive4421 4 месяца назад
Great question.... I would take the 8003's over the 8004's IF I could have four of them. If I could work it to where I had three 8004's vs. four 8003's, I would do that as well. I like to center couple the subs as much as possible. It eliminates comb filtering but I know that it can't be done in all venues. Thanks for commenting!

@@soundasylumlive4421 yeah I wound up getting some more QSC K.12.2s because they were on sale and I’m familiar with them already. I was going to get ART 932s but I’ve just never herd them in person and I live in a place there’s no where to compare or even hear them. And the warranty is 6 years on QSC and 3 on RCF so that’s another reason I went QSC. But I bet the RCFs sound better in person. Already paid off my QSCs with gig money though haha maybe I shoulda got the expensive ones you’re using.

Hey Donny - If I remember correctly, they are very similar if not identical except the enclosure material. Baltic Birch box vs. a molded composite box. Most people won't know the difference. Most sound guys may favor the Baltic Birch box and honestly, I would to. I have compared them both side by side before. Before I did this channel.... the Baltic Birch reproduces the LOW MID area better. It just keeps it together better in my opinion. I have NO issue mixing on either box and I doubt most people would hear a difference. The ART line is more affordable and lighter. You really can't go wrong with them. Enjoy!

My Tops are the NX45's. They have no HPF on them so they run down to whatever they run down to. Not bad for a acoustic artist. When I use my 8004 subs a high pass can be applied to them that is built into the 8004 amp module. So I can use a 90Hz high pass or a 120Hz high pass filter. I use the 90Hz HPF option and it gets applied to the Tops. It's a great small portable system. Thanks for commenting!

What mixer are you using? What recording device are you using? It weird when I listen closely I feel like I am hearing the reverb in the stereo field so I was wondering if you mixed off the board plus the live mix from the camera and combined them. Sounds amazing by the way no matter how you are doing it. I bought NXL44-a Mk2's last month and now I am considering the NX45-a for a different system because they seem to be going down in price because of the new 945's just released. The system I am building will be for weddings and I want something that's easy to handle by myself. I was thinking the NXL24-a MK2 or the NX45. They are the roughly the same weight and the output seems comparable. Thoughts?

Midas Pro 1 with 2 - DL153 stage boxes. The interface to record live is a Klark Teknik DN9630 (AES 50 to USB converter) right into a MacBook. I have both, the board recording of the band that played the Whitesnake tune and an iPhone recording. What you hear in the video is an iPhone 6 recording with a Shure MV88. I now have an iPhone 13 Pro and don't even bother with the Shure mic attachment. The NX45's will do great for weddings. I have not hear the NXL24's. I no longer work for the audio company where I got to play around with all the RCF stuff. That is relatively new speakers since I was in the game. I think you will be fine with either of those speakers. I wouldn't be afraid to use any of the RCF stuff. Thanks for commenting!

what about using the NX35a with the 8004s? I thougth a 12 would be better with an 18 for vocals.
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 9 месяцев назад
Yeah I did do my research on this but ultimately an RCF rep that visited our shop convinced me to stick with the 15’s. For one, they are SPL rated higher than the NX32. The driver components are a bit beefier. The vertical horn dispersion is less on the NX 45’s by 10 degrees on the NX 32’s. That means I don’t have to tilt the 45’s downward as much as I would on the NX32’s indoors. The idea that vocals are better through 12’s used to be a real thing. With today’s speakers and processing, I’m not sure it is that audible in the context of a dense mix going on. However, it is just personal preference for me that I went with the 45’s with the 15” woofer in there. I would have gladly used the NX32’s any day. I have even used the HD32’s with great success but that is getting to the lower end of speakers I would use for a loud rock band. I could tell I could only go so loud before compression or limiters kicked in on the box. Don’t be afraid to try new things.... I’m blown away by the advances in speaker boxes now days. Thanks for commenting!

Hey Jerry I bought your book and just got it today and love it. Question? I have a pair of RCF Nx 932A speakers with a Yamaha DXS 18 XFL sub with DSp. From the main l&r outs on my stage box mixer I go to the subs then from the sub outs I go to each RCF. The Sub has a built in crossover which I have set to 90 Hz. Would you still recommend a dbx driverack to set the RCF speakers Eq? I have a rta analyzer app on both my iPhone and iPad to notch out monitors and also have a 31 channel graphic eq on the mains. Thank you!
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 9 месяцев назад
Hey Rick! Awesome! Thanks so much. In this case I do not think I would use a Drive Rack. You would be adding more A/D conversion that isn't necessary. The only possible benefit is if you needed electronic delay to delay the sub relative to the top or vice versa. The only way to know would be to measure the system with SMAART. When I got my RCF Rig, I measured the heck out of everything and there was no way I could get a better phase response, magnitude response or alignment delay than what the manufacturer already achieved. It literally was a point and shoot system that was fantastic right out of the box. So I would skip the driverack for the main setup. I really don't think it will help. Now if the Yamaha Subs have electronic delay option on them, that may be helpful if you knew for sure the subs needed delayed compared to the tops. Only way to know is to measure using a program like SMAART to do that. So leave your MAIN EQ on your console FLAT to start with and then as you play some good music you know, make adjustments to the MAIN EQ if you really need to. Outdoors you shouldn't need to do anything. Indoors, it would almost always be low and low mid frequencies that build up due to the room. I think I went over it pretty good in the book. "Ringing out the room" or "Tuning the system in the Room".... Hey, I hope this helps! Reach out anytime!

Thanks for your help, Jerry appreciate it very much. I’ve only been in this mixing game for about 4 years and as you said in your book it’s a lifetime process. It never ends! The only good thing is being a musician first and the good Lord giving me a pretty good set of ears. I’m not being biased here but of all the systems I’ve mixed on QSC, JBL, Yamaha, EV and I agree with you that the RCF’s sound the best right out the gate. My first RCF boxes were the Evox 8’s, annd still have them. My neighbor would come over and play his Taylor acoustic through them and was amazed what they sounded like. I was still working at that time and got up at 3 am and it was like 9:30 and told him that I was going to have to put up a Motel 6 sign “We’ll keep the light on for ya”. Lol getting deeper into your book, thanks again!

Hi Andrewbily - I actually didn’t record this video. Someone in the crowd did and passed it onto the band and myself. May I ask if you can share any proven eq presets for the NX45, i. e. for playback applications or do you use a flat curve. I often use my nx45 for DJ applications and in my eyes they sound to flat to be pleasant. Until today I didn‘t find a preset that works well for default playback. The TT25a does it much better. Or is this my subjective impression?
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 Год назад
I always left my NX45's flat. They do in fact have a very linear flat response right out of the box. Just like the TT25a's. How is the Subwoofer to Top balance of your system? I always used a strong low end (+10dB to +15dB) bump compared to the Tops. So the frequency response has more of a TILT to it. Of course you can always EQ your Source material but I would EQ it on the channel your are running your songs through versus EQing the MAIN EQ channel since the MAIN EQ affects everything. I guess it isn't that detrimental for DJ-ing than mixing a full band though so EQ it to your liking and call it good. If the TT25a's sound better, then I would use those. The TT line is the best line of speakers RCF makes so I am certain they sound better. Better components, better DSP processing, RDNet capabilities.....etc.... and.... bigger price.

@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 Год назад
There is only one sub in this video. Dead center on the floor and it is most definitely a RCF 8004. There is no need to put two subs in this tiny space. What you may be seeing is three floor wedges across the front on the stage above the sub on the floor. As far as worst post ever? Perhaps, but I guess you would have to been following my posts from the beginning to see how this video was thrown into the mix at that time. I am not a digital creator.... I was sharing real life situations at the time and mixed in this horrible acoustic environment and posted a clip. As far as the comment section goes.... it often moves off track of video titles and since I try to answer everyone’s questions, I don’t limit it to the topic at hand. As far as hooking up subs.... go out of your mixer or stagebox to the sub or subs and then out of your subs up to your tops. I ran aux fed subs a lot as well for certain bands and situations.

Hey. Amazing setup, very tidy. Can I ask a couple of questions please? I am getting a new pa and I'm looking at a pair of NX32a and a pair of 8004a. 99% of the time we are indoors, Wedding gigs, max 250 people. We would have maybe 5 gigs per year where we'd need to crank it for a rock night, maybe 350 people, again indoors. Live band, drums, bass guitar, guitar and vocals. Do you think this setup will suit? And second question. There is a new NX932a speaker on the way, its horn is 100 x 70 compared to the NX32 which is 90 x 60. Which would you recommend or what would be the difference? Do you think I should get the new NX932 over the NX32? Thank you!

Hey thanks for commenting. It has been several years since I worked at the sound company I was employed at. When Covid hit, many of us were laid off. It was two years before I was asked back but I had already moved on and moved to a different state. With that said, I AM familiar with the NX32 boxes and they are amazing. I actually owned a pair of the NX45’s and loved them very much. I worked with a bunch of the RCF products back then.... full size line arrays... TT55, TT33’s, TT36’s, TT6’s (stupid good) and all the way down to the ART series and Evox super small setups.... I loved all of them. With the new 932’s coming out, at first glance, I like the specs. More power.... will help with headroom... and on the surface it looks like the 932’s may be a better option. Next would be, how do they sound compared to the NX32’s? My gut feeling is they are very similar. One is a Baltic Birch box and the other a composite box material. They weigh less than 5 lbs of each other... no big deal there. I have done a shootout on the NX32’s vs. the composite box equivalent the HD32’s (now discontinued I think). They sounded so much alike except the low mid frequencies. There is something cool about the Baltic Birch that helps keep the low mids together better. The tonality is just better. Will the average person hear it? Very doubtful. So I don’t know if this helps but honestly, I may go with the more affordable speakers and get busy. It won’t be long and you will be upgrading again. I couldn’t believe how fast I paid my system off along with my $10,000 Midas Pro 1 console and stage boxes. You are on the right track! Go full speed ahead with whatever decision you make. Best of luck!

hey I'm back. what mixer were you used? how do you manages the subgroup section? what i mean is. where subgroup do you send the vocal channels? does it at 1 and 2 subgroup out? and then the the rest of the instruments on 3 and 4 subgroup output? I'm still confused does subgroup faders affect the auxiliary output of the mixers? such as if the aux out were in post fade? if you know what i mean. when you reduce the threshold at subgroup out. the signal from the main would be also reduce. and does it affect the auxiliary output monitor? because what i've learned on my research. some of the aux of the digital mixer can be use to control the signal for the subwoofer fors separate output channel. instead of using the main mix output for the all signals at once.
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 Год назад
Hey Carlos! I use a Midas Pro 1 console. I could use subgroups on it but it really isn't necessary with this board. The compressors work so well. On my old Allen & Heath console, I used subgroups. Subgroup 1 was Drums. Subgroup 2 was Bass. Not really needed but it did offer an additional compressor that could be set to a different ratio. Subgroup 3 was guitars which works best if you can UNLINK the stereo subgroup. Otherwise, when it clamps down on one guitar, it will affect the other and that may not be a good thing. With that said, It is best to run stereo Subgroups UNLINKED. Subgroup 4 was Vocals. YES subgroups are link or assigned to your Main out and will affect volume when you push them up or down. They should not affect AUXES. Auxes should have their own control and not be controlled by channel faders or subgroups. If they are, then you need to check the assignments or routing. Kinda hard to do on consoles less than $3,000 though. High end consoles allow you to do whatever you want, which could be a good thing or a very bad thing. Hope this helps!

@@soundasylumlive4421that's help a lot. thanks for the tips! now i understand the basic principles of subgroup faders. have you ever use your aux out to control your rcf sub 8004 as? as if I'm mistaken the aux out themselves have their own additional processors such as compressor, graphic band eq and parametric eq. do you use them to tuned your aux output signal before sending it to your subs?
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 Год назад
@@carlotheatheist - I do use subs on an Aux. To help you understand exactly what that means is like this: Musician’s floor wedge monitors are on an aux right? They tell me the sound guy what they want in their monitor. Some want kick drum, some want snare, or guitar but most vocals and a combination of things. As a sound guy, I view the Aux Sub like, “what do I want to hear in the subs? That’s my AUX.... I want Kick, some floor toms, bass guitar and Keyboards, backing tracks if the band uses them....etc.... What I don’t want is vocals in the subs. Now most will say if you use a high pass filter, then NO vocals will get into the subs. I disagree with that. All you have to do is shut the Tops off and speak into the vocal mic and you will hear mud in the sub. Guitars can be the same way if the guitarist likes to add a bunch of low end. Set your Aux Sub Aux to POST and the Aux master to UNITY. Otherwise it can mess with the crossover point making it a “floating” crossover point. Send to that aux what instruments you want to hear. That’s about it. If setup correctly, it should sound cleaner. Now this process can get complicated but this is the basics of it. As far as the processing on that aux sub, you may or may not need to use any of it but it is there if you do. My 8004’s have a set crossover point on the subs so no eq was needed for them BUT my NX45 tops doesn’t have a crossover in this configuration. In combination with the 8004’s, the 8004 Crossover was applied to the tops. In aux sub configuration they are not. So for the tops, I used a high pass filter applied to the Main Out EQ around 100Hz. That way the tops didn’t try to reproduce anything lower than 100hz. Since my speakers didn’t have an external DSP processor, I used an EQ to mimic one. Hey hope this helps!

I had one other question, were you using the mic on the phone or are you using an external one? I want to get an external one for an android phone. Which one do you recommend?
@soundasylumlive4421

@@highend-hu3rv - for this video, it was an attached Shure mic to the iPhone. It seemed to really help out but since then I have upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro and it records as well as the mic attachment. Cell phone recordings have come a long ways so you may not need an external mic after all.

Sorry for the delayed response friend.... sure it is really simple. There are two ways. 1. You go straight out of the Left and Right Main output on the mixing board to the subs Input with mic cables. From there you go out of the Crossover outputs on the sub up to each Top Inputs. This applies the high pass filter to the Tops. 2. Is basically the same but from a stage box up on the stage. Mixer is connected to a stage box via Cat 5 / 6 cable. Then you go out the assigned Left and Right Main Outputs on the stagebox to the subs.... on out from there up to the tops. There is a 3rd way and that is putting the subs on an Aux. Hence, the “Aux Fed Subs”. I use both methods depending on the application but for Aux Fed subs to be done correctly, you really need to know what you are doing. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting!

The NX series are made of Baltic Birch and they do sound better particularly in the low mid range. All in all, ANY of those boxes are going to do the job. I favored the NX45’s out of all of those because they are beefier and I feel they handle a full range of musical information better. A full live band that is....

The bass guitar sounds amazing considering it’s not a big cabinet. I got a chance to use a pair of NX45A and a pair of 8004 subs at a gig a couple weeks ago for a benefit. Had 20 different musicians come and play. 840 people thru the door, and the RCF’S didn’t disappoint. The main band I mix for, got to hear what this system puts out and we’re impressed to say the least! The leader of the band texted me the next day, that the people there said that was the best they ever heard them. Even one of the musicians that played that day contacted me on messenger and wants me to run sound for their band through their system with RCF 8 HD-20 and 2 8006 dual 18 subs. They play a lot of Festival’s. Should be an interesting summer!

Two tops and Two subs about $10,000 with tax and shipping. Maybe a little less than that. It isn't what I paid because I worked for a dealer at the time and got the good guy deal. I also had a Midas Pro 1 console which is $10,000 all by itself but then again that isn't what I paid for it. I had been doing shows for 10 years and saving as much as I could to finally be able to make the move so I know it is difficult. The one thing I will say though... my gigs went way up in demand. I was super busy when other bands heard this rig so it definitely paid for itself in no time. Keep grinding away...

Hey Jerry love your vids, what I love most and I’m not a drummer is your killer drum mix. Is there any chance that you would share your eq and compression settings. I’m a keyboard/guitarist in our band but also mix other bands with my RCF Evox 12 system. The drums sound alright but nothing like this, especially with a iPhone. Would appreciate it very much. Love watching your videos and keep them coming!

Hey Rick - I have an Evox JMix8 and a Evox 8 that I currently use for my acoustic shows now. Great little system. It's hard to say what it is you are experiencing with that system as far as a drum mix goes.... Honestly, how I improved my mixes was by live recording the shows. I knew if I had the ability to play the recording back through the system, I could get it to sound better. So in the beginning, I would SOLO out the kick and listen.... most of the time I would make a cut around 500Hz and dip it out... sometimes a FULL cut. Then I would sweep it down towards 200Hz or even further. That got the BOX sound out of it. Also, once I got the boxiness out of it I would put another EQ filter on 100Hz with a more narrow cut... This got rid of any excess "Tubbiness" or "BOOF". For the TOP end Click sound, I boosted anywhere from 5k on up to 10k until I got the SNAP I was looking for. Not everyone wants to hear the kick drum in an overwhelming way and I felt that using cuts in these areas and sweeping them around helped me to control it and put it in the mix better. Same process for the TOMS. Snare I boosted 200Hz a little with TOP and Bottom Mics.... Sennhesier e604's on the whole kit. Kick drum got the Sennhesier e902... love that mic. It did what a beta 52 in the hole plus a beta91 on inside did but only took one mic to do it. Plate reverb on Toms. Same plate reverb I use on vocals... snare got it's own dedicated plate verb. Compression???? I always started with a 3:1 compression ratio, fast attack... can't remember release time but most like fast to medium release... 60ms to 100 ms.... not sure because I haven't look at the settings in several years... LOL... After a while, you mix more with your ears than what the settings say but that comes with doing so many shows... Maybe I can look up the settings I used on my Midas Pro 1 and do a video about it. It would have to be in the virtual offline editor of the desk since I no longer have the Pro 1. I have downsized and sold most of my gear off because of the "pandemic" and now play acoustic shows on the beaches of Florida.... So, if you can record your mixes, start remixing shows at home where you can SOLO out the tracks and listen.... make changes, really turn those knobs so you can hear what they are doing...etc... create a mix... save it.... go to the next gig with that band, pull the saved settings up and see if you got improvement. Rinse and Repeat... Hope this helps! I will see if I can find any screenshots of my mix settings.

@@soundasylumlive4421 Thank you so much Jerry appreciate it very much. I’m from Wisconsin and we have an RCF dealer about 40 minutes away and after listening to your video with the NX24’s and the 8004’s, I’m thinking this is what I need for outdoor gigs. Besides running sound for some bands at small clubs I play in a 5 piece 70’s/80’s cover band. We play quite a few outdoor gigs during the summer, so think these will do the job. Digging your content. You should post some new stuff! I'm struggling to decide between the NX45 boxes and the NXL-44A or maybe even the 24A units with a pair of 8004s. Any thoughts on those?
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 Год назад
Good question.... I’m not sure on that. I would like to hear each of them first. Those came out after the NX45’s did and I never got to demo those. Honestly I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them as far as sound quality goes. Portability has always been an issue for me since I was the only guy doing any of the sound loading in and out plus mixing for bands. I always wanted a pair of TTL6’s. Those things are so bad ass..... but they are expensive and heavy and you can’t really pole mount those very well. Too much of a risk.... I really like the new 3-way NX 985-A’s but then again.... are they too heavy? Can you pole mount them safely? I guess if I got another set of 8004’s and stacked them then I could stack the TT6’s or 985’s on them and be good to go... I just kept it simple for my own personal rig and if I needed a bigger system, I just pulled one from where I worked at. The pandemic put me out of that job and I sold all my gear and moved to Florida. I now play music on the beach and use a RCF Evox rig with a Midas MR rack mixer. Super simple and the wife and I are having a blast doing it. Wish I had more time to do videos but I don’t know what others would want to hear except reviews and demos. I no longer have access to that gear otherwise I would. Thanks for commenting!
