RCF NX45 & 8004 (Best Portable Small Format PA)

In this video I wanted to demonstrate what the RCF NX45's & the 8004 Subwoofers sound like with an actual band playing through the system.
Playing music through a system is one thing but playing an actual band is another.
This little system packs a ton of punch and can handle the majority of small clubs and bars, even nice sized beer gardens with plenty to spare.
In my opinion it is the ultimate small format PA system for the money.
Speaker Tops used in this video: amzn.to/32D4KRY
Subwoofers used in this video: amzn.to/38csqxK
iPhone Mic used to record bands: amzn.to/2wjFfZP

I appreciate that Bill! I work with a lot of bands and sometimes it hard to really get locked in with them. This past year I worked locally with a band on RU-vid called “Decade of Decadence Band”. They were super loose in the beginning but I started coaching them and working with them on individual sounds and tones....etc... and they really improved. They have a lot of videos on their channel and I didn’t always mix for them but I did a lot of those shows. Check them out when you get time. Fun stuff! Also a band called “Backseat Radio”, chick singer.... Thanks for commenting!

Awesome Mitas! You just can’t go wrong with this workhorse of a system. There just isn’t much adjusting of the main eq needed unless you are in a horrible room which actually happens a lot. In the video, my main eq was flat. No tweaks needed outdoors. No Top to Sub alignment needed. Phase is so smooth and flat. Enjoy! Oh, register your stuff and receive and extra year of warranty from RCF. Print up the certificates and file away with your paperwork.

Hey Jason - the band is no longer together but if you want to use the clip and add keys to it, go for it. I have thought about doing that myself as well. It would be cool to hear it. The bass guitar sounds amazing considering it’s not a big cabinet. I got a chance to use a pair of NX45A and a pair of 8004 subs at a gig a couple weeks ago for a benefit. Had 20 different musicians come and play. 840 people thru the door, and the RCF’S didn’t disappoint. The main band I mix for, got to hear what this system puts out and we’re impressed to say the least! The leader of the band texted me the next day, that the people there said that was the best they ever heard them. Even one of the musicians that played that day contacted me on messenger and wants me to run sound for their band through their system with RCF 8 HD-20 and 2 8006 dual 18 subs. They play a lot of Festival’s. Should be an interesting summer!

@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 Год назад
Sorry for the delayed response friend.... sure it is really simple. There are two ways. 1. You go straight out of the Left and Right Main output on the mixing board to the subs Input with mic cables. From there you go out of the Crossover outputs on the sub up to each Top Inputs. This applies the high pass filter to the Tops. 2. Is basically the same but from a stage box up on the stage. Mixer is connected to a stage box via Cat 5 / 6 cable. Then you go out the assigned Left and Right Main Outputs on the stagebox to the subs.... on out from there up to the tops. There is a 3rd way and that is putting the subs on an Aux. Hence, the “Aux Fed Subs”. I use both methods depending on the application but for Aux Fed subs to be done correctly, you really need to know what you are doing. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting!

Nice! I’m sure the TT’s are fantastic. I mix on the TT6’s as well which are amazing. The monitors in the last band video are QSC K12’s. There is an Alto TS212 in front of the guitar player. I use three types of wedges: RCF HD32’s (from my workplace), QSC K12’s & Alto TS212’s. My favorites are the RCF wedges by far because of the FIR filtering. I had a choice between all new RCF wedges for my monitor rig or a new console so I went with a new console. I got a Midas Pro 1 with the DL153 stage boxes. Thanks for commenting! Enjoy your rig!

I purposely pushed the system to an uncomfortable volume and was blown away that I never hit the limiters. Totally amazing. I also use a Midas Pro 1 console and it is super warm and clean. Great sound, what settings on subs are you using, are you cutting everything below 50 on eq also?
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 2 года назад
I actually use the “Deep Punch” setting on the subs and I do not cut anything EQ wise on the subs when I am outdoors. Indoors? If there is a build up, which in my case is always around 60-63hz, I may dip that down to tame the low end. Sometimes the buildup frequency is lower, sometimes higher. Just depends on the room. I should clarify.... I use the main EQ for room changes and not the individual channels. However, I use the high pass filter on the console on almost everything. Thanks for commenting!

The two tops (RCF NX45’s) have 15’s in them. One 15” woofer per top. I struggled in the decision process of going with 12” model vs. the 15” model but after hearing and using the 15’s, I had to go with those. It’s an amazing 54 pound powered box with “FIR” filters. The subs are the RCF 8004’s and they have a single 18” speaker in each of them. The mixer is a Midas Pro 1 with two Midas DL 153 stage racks. An expensive setup but it has paid for itself easily in one year. Thanks for commenting!

Question here my friend. When it comes to subwoofer sound, where do they generate and deliver more bass on bare hard floor ground or grass dirt floor , just like you had them but without the pallet Jack's
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 2 года назад
Anytime you can get the subwoofer box to be in direct contact with a boundary like the ground, it will be best for dB performance. A bare hard floor is going to outperform in dB over the box being in the grass. That is because of the reflection aspect of it. Does it mean it will sound better? Not necessarily. If you are in the grass, chances are you don’t have to deal with a roof or walls either. That would give you a better idea what the system sounds like versus the system sound + what the room is doing to your system sound. If I was a DJ, I would use boundary’s to couple the speakers together to generate free dB. In a reflective room with hard surfaces plus the floor, this will generate a lot of low end. However, this may or may not be what you need to do though. I try to set the low end for the type of music you are playing or mixing for and it usually works best that way.

Love your videos, Jerry! This sounds fantastic. I just bought your book for Kindle. I'm in the market for quality PA speakers for home full band jam sessions (10'x30' room basement with a low 7' ceiling). I would just control levels from Studio One on my PC. (Maybe small gigs eventually as well). These RCF's sound great, though I'm sure are overkill for me. Would you have any suggestions on what size quality active PA speakers to look for? I use an e-kit and would definitely want something that thumps and handles the kick/bass/etc. (with some headroom to spare). I'm thinking 10" or 12" tops with a single 15" or 18" subwoofer? Maybe RCF has a scaled down version of this? Also...I'm curious...on the Whitesnake tune there's a part where heavy reverb kicks in on the vocals. Do you know how those vocal effects are being triggered live? Sorry, this a lot. Thank you for the great videos and great information! Bob
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 Год назад
Hey Bob, thanks for picking up the book! I hope there are some things in there that can help you get your PA sounding great so you can put together a killer mix. Well, RCF just makes some great stuff. They have smaller versions compared to my rig. There really isn’t anything they make that sounds bad. It all sounds really good but the smaller systems can be hurt more easily if you ask it to do what it is not designed to do. For example, if I mixed this band through a EVOX system and tried to make it sound the way I did in this video, it would hurt it if not, blow up some drivers. However, at a lower volume, it may do fine. Learning to mix and eliminating harsh frequencies and mud can allow you to push into the system more and not hurt it. Hope that makes sense. As far as the vocal effects go in the video. I mixed these bands on my Midas Pro 1 by the way..... I take a vocal delay and leave it unassigned from the left right on the console. This takes away the first hard repeat. I then go out of the delay into a reverb and blend the two. It adds delay onto the reverb tail making it sound smoother. No constant delay repeats. Now there are times where you want to do hard repeats but in this song, I chose not too. I also EQ effects.... I will apply a high pass on the delay up to 300-400 Hz and a low pass on the top around 3-4K... just depends. So it looks a rounded hump on an EQ. You don’t want to repeat low frequencies and hi frequencies.... just middle frequencies. These are adjustable of course and you just have to play around and see what sounds good to you. I don’t EQ too much on the reverb.... maybe a little. As far as activating the effects live..... they are on a FX Return. You can throw delays from Returns or Sends. Whatever is easier for you or sounds better to you. I have used both. I also use Tap Tempo to set the milliseconds for throws which is usually 1/2 time on a normal tempo. Hope this helps! Edit: I should probably clarify that even though the delay is unassigned the Reverb isn’t. It gets assigned to the Left Right Main on the console.

@@soundasylumlive4421 Thanks for the detailed response! I'm sure I'll learn a lot from your book and will put it to good use. I was looking at the RCF NX-32A (12" version of your 45A). Generally speaking, would you expect I run into sound problems in a smaller place (like my 11'x32' basement)? I know these speakers are designed to "throw sound" long distances...though I imagine they'd still sound great at a lower volume with all the instruments through them if mixed right for the room (I'll also be putting acoustic paneling up). Also...does your book touch on minimizing feedback? I'd like to try and prevent this too. Thanks again, Jerry!

@@BOBopalooza The NX32’s are a little brother to the NX45’s... basically a 15” to a 12”. I could do the same with the 32’s. They are a great speaker. It still is overkill for a basement but you would have high end audio that will not run out of headroom. Boxes in the ART series would still be great for basement work. May save some cash. Yes, in the book I talk about different ways to combat feedback potential. Singers that stay behind the speakers and give you the gain up front from their voices is the best strategy BUT you will always run into that “whisper” singer who is used to singing out in the backyard under a tree with no competing noise that also doesn’t keep the mic close to her mouth so it becomes combat audio quick. I talk about some things that will definitely help. Having great speakers where they are tuned good helps immensely and the RCF’s are great for that.

We would have maybe 5 gigs per year where we'd need to crank it for a rock night, maybe 350 people, again indoors. Live band, drums, bass guitar, guitar and vocals. Do you think this setup will suit? And second question. There is a new NX932a speaker on the way, its horn is 100 x 70 compared to the NX32 which is 90 x 60. Which would you recommend or what would be the difference? Hey thanks for commenting. It has been several years since I worked at the sound company I was employed at. When Covid hit, many of us were laid off. It was two years before I was asked back but I had already moved on and moved to a different state. With that said, I AM familiar with the NX32 boxes and they are amazing. I actually owned a pair of the NX45’s and loved them very much. I worked with a bunch of the RCF products back then.... full size line arrays... TT55, TT33’s, TT36’s, TT6’s (stupid good) and all the way down to the ART series and Evox super small setups.... I loved all of them. With the new 932’s coming out, at first glance, I like the specs. More power.... will help with headroom... and on the surface it looks like the 932’s may be a better option. Next would be, how do they sound compared to the NX32’s? My gut feeling is they are very similar. One is a Baltic Birch box and the other a composite box material. They weigh less than 5 lbs of each other... no big deal there. I have done a shootout on the NX32’s vs. the composite box equivalent the HD32’s (now discontinued I think). They sounded so much alike except the low mid frequencies. There is something cool about the Baltic Birch that helps keep the low mids together better. The tonality is just better. Will the average person hear it? Very doubtful. So I don’t know if this helps but honestly, I may go with the more affordable speakers and get busy. It won’t be long and you will be upgrading again. I couldn’t believe how fast I paid my system off along with my $10,000 Midas Pro 1 console and stage boxes. You are on the right track! Go full speed ahead with whatever decision you make. Best of luck!

Thank You! For drums I use Sennheiser e604's for the Toms and Floor Tom(s), I also use them on Snare Top & Bottom but lately I have been using a cheaper Nady mic (DM70's) for Snare Top. It just seems to bring the snare out for some reason.... Crazy because it is a cheap mic. I also use either a Shure Beta 52a for kick or the Sennheiser e902. Depends on the style of the band. Classic Rock... beta 52a. Metal... I go for e902. Guitars - I use Sennheiser e609 or Shure SM57's. In this clip the guitar player used a "Helix" footpedal so he was totally direct here. Vocal mics are Shure 58's, beta 58's and the singer here is using an Audix OM5. No overheads here. When I have 4 vocal mics across the front and the drummer is close by, I usually don’t bother with overheads. So much cymbal makes it way to the vocal mics anyways.... overheads add a ton of high frequency sibilance that it can be overwhelming. So the vocal mics rule the mix. Meaning, I have to set them where they are loud and clear.... maybe not so much loud but above the instruments. From there I ask myself, “what needs to come up next..... I then build the mix from there. Now on a big stage, I mic everything.... thanks for commenting! Hope this helps!

It is possible. The NX45’s are 90 x 50 and the NX24’s are 100 x 30 with the NX24’s designed more like a column speaker. The best way to know would be to test the two. Most folks don’t have that luxury but I am certain someone here on YT is demoing these speakers. The NX24’s didn’t exist when I did this video so the new NX45’s were new off the shelf and the best thing available by RCF besides moving up to the TT line. If I still worked for the audio group I was employed by, I would definitely demo as many RCF speakers as possible. In any case, both speakers would throw quite well but the column speaker NX24 may do it better. Not sure though. The cost difference would be interesting to know as well. Hope this helps a little. Hi, I have the exact set up. My mixer is A&H qu-16 with AB168 snake. I'm using yamaha dzr15 as monitor. Can you share what eq settings on set up? Also what vocal effects you use and mic eq. Thanks
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 2 года назад
Main EQ is set FLAT. Vocal channel EQ is high passed to at least 180hz. Low EQ around 265hz with a medium “Q” to get some muffle out of the vocal. The rest is usually flat, but sometimes I would take some 2-4kHz out (slight dip), if I am inside in a poor acoustic room. That is it for vocals. Vocal effects go like this..... Delay in slot 1, verb in 2, doubler in 3 and plate verb in 4 for snare. Select delay EQ and high pass it up to around 300hz. No need to have low information repeating. Low pass the top end down to around 3-4kHz. That way the delay repeats have a softer effect rather than an exact duplicate of the original vocal. On the QU 16, how many effects can you run? 2 or 4? I’m super familiar with the QU32 so it has 4 effects slots. All mics are standard Shure SM58’s and beta 58’s. The male singer in the video is using a Audix OM 5. Works well with his voice. Drums have Sennheiser evolution e604’s on toms. Shure beta 52a for kick.I also use a Sennheiser e902 that I love. e604 for snare top, sm 57 for bottom snare. Shure sm57 for guitar. I also use a Sennheiser e609 on guitar as well. Radial DI for bass. The Sennheiser e902 on bass is great as well. Well, I hope this helps a bit. Thanks for commenting!

I think it is possible to run the two tops and two subs on a 20 amp circuit. But not much else. Adding the monitor wedges would be questionable and of course, adding the bands guitar and bass amplifiers would more than likely take it over the top. It also depends on how hard you drive the system. Once you get into clipping on a system it all changes.... square wave... it’s like a dead short. How I ran my system was like this: I asked for a minimum of TWO 20 amp circuits. I split the PA down the middle....The main TOP speaker and one SUB plus two monitor wedges were on one circuit. Then repeated that for the other side. From there, I would add the bass amp to one side and the guitar to the other side.... lights were all LED so they got plugged into whichever side had less instrument amps on the circuit. I never had any issues doing it that way. So to answer your question.... yes, you could put the two tops and both subs on one 20 amp circuit if you needed to and as long as that circuit hasn’t been tripped a bunch of times (wearing it out), you should be fine. If not, bring long extension cords I guess.... Lol. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I use a Midas Pro 1 console. Totally overkill for local bands but it has all the tools you would ever want in the thing. As far as audio processor? Do you mean like a Driverack of sorts or a system DSP processor? If that is what you are referring to.... No I did not. The RCF power modules have DSP built into them. They have taken all the guess work out of the “Tuning” process. All tuned in their anechoic chamber post crossover equalization. So there really isn’t anything to tune up unless you get inside a horrible acoustic environment. Then you may have to deal with some mud and hard reflection issues. I handle that on my Main Left Right EQ on the console. If you meant Effects Processor, I just use the onboard Effects Library and pick out a stereo delay and a reverb with a Plate Effect on it. Hope this helps!

@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 2 года назад
Hey J - the grass was damp when I arrived and there were some pallets there so I used them to put the sub on. I always try to couple the sub together because I only have two of them and you gain free dB when you do. So the more subs you couple together, the more dB you get out of them. The biggest reason why they are coupled is it eliminates the “comb filter” that is present when you set the subs Left & Right. It is easy to hear the comb filter when you walk across the listening area. You will hear the low end strong in one spot and then you take a step or two to the right (or left), and the volume drops way down, so you take another step or two and the low end comes back. These are cancellations occurring and if I happen to be mixing in a cancellation zone there would be no doubt I would be trying to make up for it, therefore “goosing” up the low end in the non-cancellation spots making it sound way too bass heavy. You want to avoid that. On another thread here, a guy told me that the subs in the middle doesn’t have a very good look. Well, in a perfect world, these subs would be tucked away underneath a stage and you wouldn’t even see them. When you are told to set up in a field, you do what will give you the best audio result, not necessarily the best optic view. This was a country / rock party, not a wedding or corporate event so everyone want to have fun. You can add more subs but generally you want them to be the same make and model. BUT.....if it adds to the overall mix and sounds good, go for it. Putting subs on solid ground / floor is probably best because it boundary loads which means you get more dB, 3dB to be exact, add another sub, 3 more dB and so on..... stick them against the wall, more dB, in a corner? Lots more dB because now you are corner loading... Well I hope this helps a little! Let me know how it turns out!

Yeah when you couple subs, you gain 3 dB for free. Add another box, gain another 3 dB and so on..... I went with the 8004’s due to portability. Some venues were just too small to take a bunch of subs in or it wasn’t necessary. The 8006 is essentially two 8004’s connected. If you open up an 8006, there is a dividing wall in the center. As far as the 8005 goes, I have never used one or heard one. The larger 21” driver doesn’t really appeal to me for some reason but I am sure it will do just fine. With the subs you mentioned, you are set either way. Enjoy!

Hey Rick! Awesome! Thanks so much. In this case I do not think I would use a Drive Rack. You would be adding more A/D conversion that isn't necessary. The only possible benefit is if you needed electronic delay to delay the sub relative to the top or vice versa. The only way to know would be to measure the system with SMAART. When I got my RCF Rig, I measured the heck out of everything and there was no way I could get a better phase response, magnitude response or alignment delay than what the manufacturer already achieved. It literally was a point and shoot system that was fantastic right out of the box. So I would skip the driverack for the main setup. I really don't think it will help. Now if the Yamaha Subs have electronic delay option on them, that may be helpful if you knew for sure the subs needed delayed compared to the tops. Only way to know is to measure using a program like SMAART to do that. So leave your MAIN EQ on your console FLAT to start with and then as you play some good music you know, make adjustments to the MAIN EQ if you really need to. Outdoors you shouldn't need to do anything. Indoors, it would almost always be low and low mid frequencies that build up due to the room. I think I went over it pretty good in the book. "Ringing out the room" or "Tuning the system in the Room".... Hey, I hope this helps! Reach out anytime!

Thanks for your help, Jerry appreciate it very much. I’ve only been in this mixing game for about 4 years and as you said in your book it’s a lifetime process. It never ends! The only good thing is being a musician first and the good Lord giving me a pretty good set of ears. I’m not being biased here but of all the systems I’ve mixed on QSC, JBL, Yamaha, EV and I agree with you that the RCF’s sound the best right out the gate. My first RCF boxes were the Evox 8’s, annd still have them. My neighbor would come over and play his Taylor acoustic through them and was amazed what they sounded like. I was still working at that time and got up at 3 am and it was like 9:30 and told him that I was going to have to put up a Motel 6 sign “We’ll keep the light on for ya”. Lol getting deeper into your book, thanks again!

Question my friend. I my my regular set 2 subs and 2 loudspeaker. I just got a third subwoffer that I want to use with the 2 subs on the front. How do I connect that one 🤔

If your current configuration is Left and Right subs in stereo, whether there are separated or not, you just have to pick one of the subs “Link” output. It doesn’t matter which side. You just have to have a way to get it connected. In a mono setup, as you know, you just daisy chain the speakers together. Do your subs have a crossover built into them or do your Tops have a “High Pass Filter” setting?

Thanks! I use a Midas Pro 1 Console with the Midas DL153 Stage Boxes via Cat5e cabling. Best sounding console I have ever used so far.

I had one other question, were you using the mic on the phone or are you using an external one? I want to get an external one for an android phone. Which one do you recommend?

@@highend-hu3rv - for this video, it was an attached Shure mic to the iPhone. It seemed to really help out but since then I have upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro and it records as well as the mic attachment. Cell phone recordings have come a long ways so you may not need an external mic after all.

What size crowd would you say you can handle with that setup?

I’m actually working on a video right now that will hopefully give everyone a better idea. The quick down and dirty answer is A LOT! Considering the size of the rig, it can cover a big area nice and loud. I have recently done shows where the audience was around 700-850 without a single complaint. New video on this coming soon!

Have you ever tried a cardioid set up with the subs? I can't see needing it in a small format system but just curious.
@soundasylumlive4421

I have. In fact, at one point, I messed with it quite a bit. To be honest, I have never had a band complain about too much low end on the stage. That alone made me question to even do it. From a FOH position, it doesn’t help me much, from a bands position, it helps to reduce low end....maybe too much low end... As Dave Rat (FOH for Red Hot Chili Peppers) explained, it still leaves some strange artifacts in the overall sound no matter what way you try the cardioid....you just have to deal with it. I have experienced this as well. I am SMAART certified through Rational Acoustics and I have done my best to learn how to time align all of the signals. It’s super fun to do and learn but in the end, if the band isn’t complaining of a huge low end overload onto the stage, then I would just keep the subs facing forward with + polarity. Also, keep in mind, if there is a stage with a solid wall in front of it, a sub facing that wall will wreak havoc on everything. The rear facing sub needs space. So if the stage doesn’t have a front wall and the sub can project freely in space, it will work. I have seen some guys actually face it into a front stage lip / wall and it makes a mess of things. Cool question! Hope this helps.

Hi, do you think ×2 8004's with ×4 art 935's will work well? Thanks
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 2 года назад
The 8004’s are killer! 4 of the 935’s may not play well together. They have a 100 x 60 degree pattern on the high frequency. 100 degrees horizontally with two boxes covers very nicely. So unless you want the additional two boxes for the sides, I wouldn’t fool with them. You would have to splay them apart by a lot and even then I don’t know if that will help more or cause destructive interference. My NX45’s shot out to the sides really well.
