In the first half of 2021 I made the decision to move to Portugal and buy a farm to change my life(-style) into a healthier, simpler and more sustainable life.
With this channel I want to document my journey and adventure for my family, friends and myself as well as everyone else that is interested in: - moving to Portugal, - buying property in Portugal, - farming (permaculture), - off-grid living or just want to know if i succeed or fail :-).
There will be a big learning curve as my video making experience and video editing skills are limited and I do not have any experience or knowledge of farming or gardening as i never had a garden before.
Thank you for reading this and please subscribe to the channel and also watch, like and comment on my videos :).
Nice to see an alternative in action. I have a Berta flail attached to a BCS740 two-wheeled tractor which actually minces up the ferns [bracken] which is a major problem on 80 this hectacre farm currently. However I am hoping to use a mower on the re-growth as it will be quicker than the BCS : ) We have an old AS Almaher that is rather old -20 years- or go for a new zero turn mower.
Thanks 👍. I had my first breakdonw though right after i stopped filming. The belt that drives the wheels slipped of. Had to open it and fix it...instead of finishing that terrace ;-)
WHEW! I'm exhausted just WATCHING! Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you opted not to rent/borrow a motorized trench digging machine? Asking for me, so I don't have to feel so tired watching you. 🤪😂
Thank you James. I have not searched for a company that would rent them out. Seen the machine the people from the regacentro used and how they handled it, i am not sure i could get it in and out of my car (ford van) without help (that i do not have at the moment). So i did not bother to search for a company that would rent those machines. I also thought it would be less exhausting (wrong again...lol), but it is a good workout and i am in no rush. As the pipe does not hinder me using the EV car (Tesla). in hindsight i guess with one of those machines the hole trench for the pipe could be dug out in the matter of one hour. But i also wanted to lay the pipe close or next to the existing pipes for the electric cables and there you do not want to use such a machine (as the risk of damaging the electirc cable pipes is high). Once i am done digging the part above or nextr the electric pipes i might reach out to regacentro and ask if they will be in my area and if they would mind digging the remainin 6m(?) of trench or so....will see.
Skiing in the morning and surfing or beaching in the afternoon is very Californian as well. Similar climate and landscape makes that possible. At least with your sore muscles, you know what to do. 😉
@@Quinta-Entre-Aguas It’s more of a Southern Californian thing to do. My old boyfriend did it, and took pictures. The snow is Big Bear, and several beaches on the coast.
@@AnOldGuyinEurope 20 mins or less, walking in some places in Marin county. But, the snow is about 3 hours away. You could do this in February, but the days are too short. For this to be an enjoyable thing to do.
Which shop do you mean? If you talk about the shops on the top of serra da estrela i agree. I realized while editing the subtitles i did not mention what i payed for the repair of the car. It was 40€ ;-)
@@carlosvictor8679 prices everywhere for food and household supplies have gotten very scary..only way is to produce as much of your own food as possible, like most people here..if you are stuck in apartment land though I feel for you!
Star (which could be Stern in German) is maybe an obvious name for a Serra da Estrela dog. For a female dog, you could shorten the Portuguese to 'Strela.* Maybe name the other dog Sol or Lua, or after one of your favorite stars or constellations *& then when you call her, you could pretend to be Marlon Brando in "A Streetcar Named Desire" yelling "'St(r)ela! 'St(r)ela!" 😜🤣🤣
I don't really know. All my dogs came with a name so far. Suzette said that if there were any name requests she would put that on the original paperwork. So if you have any idea then let's hear it ;-)
Hi. Thought I'd put my dog names ideas down for you. Portuguese: Corajoso - masculine Carajosa- feminine = brave Leal/Fiel = Loyal or trusty. Hope you like them.
They make a wheel with a platforms on the outsiders of the wheel you stand on it The wheel is in the middle of your feet and it pulls you around while you’re mowing it call a Valky We have in America and saves a lot of time 👍✌️🤙❤️🇵🇹❤️
Looks god, as you wrote test the water. Here in Sweden we have lot of iron in the ground, so we have to install special filter. I hope you wont have the same problem.
Impressive, what you’ve been able to do in 1 year! Seems you have a good balance of doing it yourself, and hiring people to do what you can’t. Good for you! 🍻 Oh, those ant deterrents…😖 My mom used them. I couldn’t figure out why I had such a hard time sleeping. It’s where I grew up. She eventually mentioned them to me. I wondered, so I unplugged all of the ones on the floor I was sleeping. I went to sleep. So, if you find your sleep is strangely disturbed, it could be that. Apparently, I have the nerves of an ant! 😜
Thank you very much. I forget what i already have done, because i am always busy with what i need to do next. So i usually do not look back. Searching for old pictures and see them side by side with current ones amazed me as well. The deterrents are at the tech room now and i am not sleeping there. So that should not be an issue. I jave to say the ants do not seem to be very impressed or deterred by them. Will see if there is an effect in a couple weeks. Fingers crossed 🤞
Maty there are indeginous turtles that are on the endangered species list of Portuguese wild life, take picture of it in the dry if possible to check if it resembles any of the native species
Thank you Joel. I did post the same turtle video in a Facebook group "Wildlife in Portugal" and one of the members has identified the turtles as "Mauremys leprosa". He also said that their numbers are declining, but another person replied that they are quite common in the Castelo Branco district. I don't know and am just happy the van life there. I won't disturb them any further (by trying to get them fotographed on land).
Well, (see what I did there), that was quite a drill ... strangely satisfying ... and with 12 - 15k litres per hour, you should now be able to get at least one whole shower in without running out of water. 😂
Thank you Fiona. Yes i am very pleased with the result (latest news is that the borehole can provide 30k liters per hour). Soon it will be connected to my mobile home and washing machine.
Yes a lot of lactose intolerant people can have a little lactose, if their body still produces some amount of the lactase enzym which is needed to process (= digest) the lactose. I did try old cheeses and goat cheeses in the past, but unfortunately it seems my body has completely stopped the production of the lactase enzym. This means i even can get issues of so called "lactose free" products made from animal milk, because those still contain lactose but under a certain level and thus are allowed to call themselves lactose free (same as for example with the alcohol free beers or 0.0 beers. They all have traces of alcohol). Having lived 20 years in the Netherlands i am kinda used to live in a cheese producing region, without being able to taste them. Soalheira is very famous fir their cheeses and it is my neighbouring village.
Thank you Fiona, that is a good idea. I did buy a tool to kill the weeds with hot water and according to the manufacturer it also reaches the roots and kill the roots too.
@@fionaworrell4535yes i did a test run or Proof of concept to see if i can run the "Unkrautfuchs" with my solar system setup, because it needs quite a lot of power (3500W that means 15A). I also did use it this week on my granite Plattform (will go on RU-vid this Friday)
So much drilling, so much wetness. Congratulations! 🍻 When I was interested in moving to Ghana, I watched a lot of unsuccessful drilling, on RU-vid. They all would have been happy with what your land has. No, I had no plans of living in the country, but it’s still interesting to watch. 😃
I am really enjoying watching this. Everyone talks about boreholes in their land, but this really explains it perfectly. I am in Niagara Falls, Canada...we have lots of water...lol
Intresting, Same technik as drilling for water in Sweden. What is you plan for the 2 store building. It is nice to watch your progress of your place. Keep up the god work.
Thank you very much. The two story ruin will be the last thing i recover and it will take more time and money. Before attempting to recover my big ruin, i want/need to get the fencing done, border wall fixed and raised, carport and dog kennel done, shed recovered to serve as workshop and garage. Then i can start investigate what i can do with the big ruin. I do have ideas, but have not yet investigated if those will be permitted. Only time will tell ;-). Have a nice weekend
Oh sorry. I don't know why your comment disappeared. It was not me ;-). Not sure what rock salt is, but i did tried a mix of vinegar(5 liter), water(5 liter), salt (1 kg) and a splash of dish washing soap. That worked for a while but they do come back. I will make myself a 60 meter extension cord.
@Quinta-Entre-Aguas in Portuguese it's called sal-gema. Be careful with the cable length and power drawn from it. You could melt the cable. Even when you buy an extension lead they only come at a certain length with thermal cut outs. My previous comment might of been my fault 🤣🤣. Living the dream
@@mikemagee9156 i think i will be good. Bought 60m of 2.5mm² three wires cable and the right plugs (male and female). Hopefully will make that extension cord tomorrow..
