i feel like giving points for the story and the associated influence of the story isn't fair and is a significant chunk of the marketing behind this label and what they were banking on to be a cash cow.. judge the bottle with out the story, if this had no association with don julio what would you think? to me this is what an "expensive cheap tequila" should be, it has some of the rawness of a cheap tequila but at the same time has the clean elements to save it from actually being a cheap tequila. this brand stinks of "hey lets take the lower quality barrels of don julio, the factory seconds that wont pass the test for any don julio labels and just say its the grandsons brand with a really clean label and bottle and put this great story behind it."

This many reviews in and they still can't define balance, complexity, or flavor to each other. The whole Balance issue seems to be Jules considering balance and complexity to be related - and I can see both sides. There is a lack of complexity if it is all sweetness but if your goal is a non-complex but balanced sweet profile... To me balance is "does anything stick out in this experience". For example if I'm eating a piece of dark chocolate and for 1 second I get a hit of habanero pepper then I would say it is out of balance. If the sweet and the pepper somehow had harmony and I tasted both all the way through and they complimented each other then I would say it is balanced and complex. Both cases are complex because you get multiple flavor notes but one is disharmonious to the experience and the other is intentionally harmonious. The best example in the whiskey world might be Scotch/Peated Whiskey. Peat is a dominant flavor and can really overshadow everything else. Sherry can do the same. Both add complexity to a whiskey but balance is something totally different. A well balanced peated Scotch matured in a Sherry cask is something special. When you can drink something with notes of Campfire, Stewed stone fruits, and honey and it all seemingly works... that's impressive BALANCE. But if you are drinking a Macallan 12 sherry cask you just pretty much just get sherry, but it is well balanced. TL:DR - Jules is wrong.

I can see why you might not know where the VSOP stands drinking neat, but it's super versatile in cocktails, and unlike the XO, it's in a price range that's actually manageable for mixing with consistently. I make my boulevardiers with it along with swapping out .25oz of the sweet vermouth for dry curicao for some extra tropical flavors and it's incredible. One bar I went to did a tropical riff on a sazerac using it and it totally reads as a sazerac at first, but then long into the finish it takes a left turn into that agricole funkiness. Definitely recommend if you still got the bottle lying around

This might be one of the sillier releases in recent years. I love Maker's 46 cask strength so I'll be adding a bottle when I find it at MSRP. I've see them at a few stores and they were trying to charge $120+. This is a MASSIVE release and will be very available so no reed to over pay. What I hear is this is more on the scale of a batch of Makers 46 Cask strength for volume of cases. Probably a 20k cases.

After watching, also noticed that BRT-01 (2022) is near identical to the BEP. 109.4p vs 109.6p and 10 toasted American oak staves. Then went back and looked and even the FAEs from 2021 follow. 01 release uses 10 American and the 02 uses 10 French. Will definitely be more cautious/observant with these annual Wood Finishing releases now.

This entire series has just been full of marketing. BRT was meant to highlight their warehouse barrel rotation practices. But isn't every barrel of Maker's Mark rotated through the floors? The BEP was meant to highlight their rather low 110 barrel entry proof. But doesn''t every barrel of Maker's start at 110? Idk, they were ok releases but stores uncharging for these because they were "limited" wasn't worth paying over srp for. Unless you're the most ardent of Maker's Mark fanboys, your best bet is to find a store with a Maker's store pick that you can taste beforehand and put your cash on that if it's a good one rather than overpay for these things.

Did Dutch just forget BEP? I'm pretty sure that was the last WFS release. Regardless, I enjoyed The Heart specifically in relation to BEP which edges into the over-oaked area for me.

Yes - you are correct! I totally forgot BEP was last - for some reason thought that was before BRT.
@paulb2399
@paulb2399 4 дня назад
I think I really enjoyed this because I've found a LOT of the recent wheated releases from other brands to be trash! Grainy messes with syrupy sweetness. This was a breath of fresh air with its balance and, I'd argue, complexity when judged against the current wheater market. Was it groundbreaking? No. But it was significantly better than about half of the previous WFS releases. I blinded it against BEP, SE4xPR5, and Cellar Aged. The Heart came in second which surprised me because PR5 has always been a standout for my palate but it's far more chaotic in a blind with this and CA. Just goes to show how much palate preference plays into things even in a fairly structured ranking system.

I've had plenty of iterations of Maker's Mark that taste like hay or corn (with RC6 probably having the most prominent corn note), so getting the grain out is definitely not a baseline for Maker's. I'd argue that most Maker's Mark has a funky grain note.
