I'm curious as to set-up, long ago I ground aircraft cranks, hot rods, to large diesels, then over the decades I taught myself machining by collecting. This is the first video that, as far as I can see, is holding the work as I think it should be done, correctly. I have a planer and mill, both 1x1x3 feet envelope. I would assume that the bottom of a lathe bed would be alike the centers on a crankshaft and possibly held downward without distorting the work, loading, but most other objects should only be trapped horizontally, floating, with minimal downward force. And, place shims in places not in contact with the platten. Is this generally how it is done? Just watching reminds me of the boomerang kid on Mad Max wanting the music toy.

UK midlands, with milling machine tables it is usual to do the way side as well as the table surface, they often warp over time from over tightening and bad or wrong sized T-nuts crimping the top of the table, it will depend on how much needs taking off, a rough idea would be £250-£300

Im not sure when Colchester started hardening there beds but this one was, early ones may have bean fame hardened rather than induction hardened

Taking it nice and easy. Sometimes it's good to have some help when moving around machinery. But, I find it's seems a lot easier when there's no one else around. I'm always a little concerned filming things like this. Because it seems something Always goes wrong when you point a camera at it 😒 First time watching your channel. Looking forward to watching more of what you do 👍

I'm on the opposite side of the planet, fyi. But it would be great to get this done to my old Petersen lathe. It is one with an extendable bed that stood the test of time very well. Eight feet long in the closed position loa. 6ft. bed opens to 10 ft. It's an almighty challenge to resurface due to the size and that machine you have would be something like, what would be the best way to spruce up the ways. You oughta do up a video of the whole process Joe? People will eat it up!
@joecorner8974

Hi, that sounds similar to the Stanley sliding bed lathes we had over here? if it hasn't got hardened ways it could be scraped, although I cringe at some of the home-brew bed grinding videos on here. Anything that's improving the situation can't really be knocked. I've asked my dad to help out filming (waving my phone around in one hand while working isn't really the best) I'll try and get some more detailed videos up soon
