I replayed this every couple of years. One of the most creative, anti protagonist franchises ever! And litterally the only game to capture the Dungeon Keeper vibes, despite it being a different genre. Its an indigment that the dev dropped it so hard x. x
Feels like a filler game, like for a niche game series sadly, I feel this just focused to look pretty rather than actually been “THE NEXT BIG RATCHET AND CLANK”
Extremely underrated series. The physical copy of Overlord 1 came with a cool map too. Was fortunate enough to pick up both of them a couple years ago for $14. Would highly recommend anyone pick up the 360 version as it's currently delisted, and only able to be played off disc.
When my brother first introduced me to Overlord, He said "It's a WarCraft in third-person view" while laughing. To me this is western version of Pikmin. Fable 1, A Bard's Tale and Overlord has the best 2000s American-British humour.
Excellent point about leadership and Sole responsibility for losing brothers. Decisions, decisions, ours to make or not to make. It's tiring to hear players blame friendly AI. Cheers.
Funny how you went from one gearbox game to another after your borderlands 2 was broken. I always say that Ubisoft alongside with Gearbox are currently not in a good state at the moment to make another Brother In Arms game, especially after the teaser for Furious 4 that got canned after bad press and critiques, Most trip A devs are moving and staying towards the online service / microtrans / pay2win / gamble / monetize, instead of decent top quality story telling. I hope to be proven wrong.
Yeah it's kinda sad because it's always fun to think about old series coming back but most have become something completely different I remember getting excited for a new assassins creed every time one was announced now I usually just take a look say cool then move to the next with the rose tinted glasses I always look at it like it's the same studio it was in it's prime which is definitely not the case lol.
@@Crashtestdummy103 ubisoft is notorious for delisting and canceling games, like i always think about how Rainbow Six: Patriots was replaced by Rainbow Six Siege soley on the fact that it was a competitive e-sports money printer
I grew up on Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 1 & 2. And at the time, with the RTS squad controls, I had wished there was a WWII game that had similar structure. Then, a couple years ago, I came across Brother’s in Arm, and everything came together for me.
Let it stay dead. Gearbox is a garbage company, Randy is a greasy grifter, and there's no way a series revival would actually be good with the both in charge
This is a great topic and a fascinating video. Just one piece of advice: it would really help you to build out some clear notes/talking points before doing a video like this one. You do a lot of things well as a narrator, but you'd be even stronger if you eliminated a lot of your filler words.
I appreciate it and yeah I have a hard time not speaking a whole story when it can be simplified might look into that suggestions for later date videos thanks!
anyone else always instantly reload checkpoint if a single one of their squadmembers died? i considered the death of even one of my men just as much as a mission failure as me dying
Hells highway was the first game I got with my ps3, we didn’t have to much money to buy any games for a year or so until I had managed to save up enough random change so I played the shit out of it as a kid lol that one part where a face flashes on your screen absolutely terrified me 😂
@@Crashtestdummy103 well yeah that’s surely possible if you want to rely on hints and guides to solve all the puzzles. Just saying if you’re taking an honest crack at figuring it all out yourself it’s going to be well over that amount of time for the average gamer
Sooo I'm actually one of the leveldesigners of those games. Sometimes I feel nostalgic and look ot up on youtube. So some things you may find interesting to know! The games were developed by a relatively small team, ranging from 20-40 people. Because much of the game was developed on chronological order, the later levels of the first game feeling underdeveloped is kinda correct. The writing of the dialogue was done by Rhianna Pratchett, daughter of sir pratchett. She has the same vibe and humor. The legionnaires of the second game were kind of inspired by the Asterix comic books. You can see it clearly in their design. The reason that there's no proper overlord revival: the IP is in the hands of codemasters now, not in the hands of triumph studios, who made the first two games and created the concept from the ground up. In the first game you could capture slave girls. Originally there was also a plan for a slave guy in a skimpy suit, but I believed the idea was nixed. Triumph Studios is based in the netherlands. When the first game was previewed to a group of international game journalists. After the event, 3 of them asked my coworker with long hair where the nearest coffeeshop was. He decided to go with them to ensure nothing bad would happen to them. Last bit: so in the first game, when seeing Melvin at the party and your minions start to dance, Gnarl goes like 'nooooo, I'm dancing, quick do something lord!'. During the recording, the voiceactor put on the song 'I don't feel like dancing' from the scissorsisters and started singing his lines over it.
Man I loved Overlord, commanding all my little gremlins about, watching them armor up and me chilling in my pimp tower. Really lived up the dark lord power fantasy with a Saturday morning flavor
I was so disappointed, i expected to be evil, or at least funny evil like in dungeon keeper. But nope. You are a hero, a good guy, and at times a nuisance. I had soo high hopes!
Hi! Dev here - Thanks for making this video. You bring up many fair points. Indeed, I am no longer developing the game. This was my first major project and the code-base was developed over 2.5 years. The Blue Skies region ended up being incredibly complex and it started having crashing issues almost every 30 seconds at the beginning of 2022 (game launched october 2022). I playtested and tried to get the crashes under control and from what I could tell, I mostly succeeded. I see now that I did not succeed sufficiently and I apologize for that. With the old code base it simply isn't very feasible to reduce the crashes even further. I promise I will do better in the future though. Thankfully the first three worlds appear to be acceptable so there is still a good amount of hours that is relatively stable. Correct me if I am wrong. Also the siege mode is pretty stable if I recall correctly. For my own reference; could you let me know in what level you are experiencing the majority of the crashes and after which level you cannot progress? I might be able to investigate. Have a good day.
Hey i love the game btw but usually the crashes for me happen right at the beginning of the first level at blue skies I've tried doing it multiple times but it just doesn't let me progress I'm not sure if its because of placement or what causes it. But the siege mode works perfectly fine from what I've seen even in that region so I'm not sure why the campaign map results with that but if you ever work on something else ill make sure to keep my eyes out for it!
you can easliy defeat the reaper with clockwork lancet and lurarial shield an anyweapon because the stun works of lance works vs him and shield makes you immune to his damage
Such a cool series. Sooo mych potential. A reboot/remaster could do it some good but thise are such a gamble right now, wouldn't trust EA right now. One of my Overlord 1 saves got hard locked in the Dwarven mines. I think I teled back to the tower too fast and unspawned a wheel 🛞 (part?). Maybe linked with a cutscene but it's been a while. I tried the demo for 2 but never got it. I blame League, but unsure. Maybe just cheap and/or broke. Getting the urge to go seek it out.
I loved Overlord, the general tone, the dialogue, Gnarl and the minions were utterly glorious. Especially the minions. I miss those crazy little bastards...
