Bespoke bag maker focussing on cycling based in Weston-super-Mare, UK. My aim with this channel is to provide information on how you can get started making your own bags.
hi, guys, estoy empezando aprender a usar las maqunas, quiero empezar hacer mis propias bolsos de bikepacking. alguien que me comparta links para hacer los patrones tutoriales saludos...
I've been attempting to make some of my own gear and have been getting frustrated at not being able to actually go to a shop and see the materials I know I need. Seeing them on a screen just isn't the same. I know you can get samples but it all takes time and even then you have to decided what to get a sample of and it still might not be what you want. So a very useful video - thank you. I'll be looking at your other ones now.
Jon, was wondering what sewing machine you use. I am looking to buy my first heavy duty machine for some bags, dont want to spend too much. What would you recommend?. Also is the 'edging' tool on the machine just a bolt on that you can buy for any machine? Many thanks
Late to this video! 'been struggling with a rear rack for long enough, time for a frame bag!! Is there any advantage to lining the bag and if so what sort of material would you reccommend? would adding removable dividers make lining more tricky? Thanks so much for taking the time to do this tutorial and also thanks for answering everyone's questions. You rule!!! Subscribed :)
Hey George, I think lining a bag is a personal choice, it could aid with water resistance depending on the material used, I think most people use something like ripstop nylon but you could also go with another layer of cordura, or VX21. With removable dividers you just have to plan their location in advance, lining the bag would potentially make for a “tidier” look on the outside if you were to sew the Velcro onto the liner only then the stitching wouldn’t be visible on the exterior of the bag. Hopefully that all makes sense, any more questions feel free to ask, and thanks for the kind words!
Hi, just found your channel and really enjoying the content. I’ve been looking for a resource and project to get started and this is excellent. Just wondered what material you are using for the tool roll?
Thank you for the videos! I’ve been binging them. I’ve made a couple bar bags so far as per your instructions and am very pleased with the results. Top notch! Very inspiring, thank you for taking the time.😀
Excellent channel. This has been the perfect resource to get started making bags. Quick question though, do you use the hook loop straight off the roll as it is or is it better to stitch it onto nylon webbing of the same width and stitch the webbing onto the bag? Also, probably a question for a video in its own right but how do you make frame bags with an internal divide?
Straight off the roll here, I’ve found no benefit in stiffening it with webbing. I have always done frame bags with removable dividers, for those I stitch loop (fluffy) Velcro to the inside of the bag and then make a panel the width of the bag with hook Velcro tabs so I can pull it in and out as needed.
@@MackWorkshop Ahhh that makes sense. It sounds quite simple then. Thanks for the quick reply. I've got another question for you on zips. If I break a panel for a zip (or 2 if doing a shelf), how much do you lose after taking into account the 2 folds on the stitch either side of the zip. The zip itself adds lenght back in though, does it all cancel out or do i need to add zip allowance as well as a seam allowance?
Superb vid. I've got one of Jon's handlebar bags from about 2015ish. Still going strong. One wrap may not be as strong as it was, but the rest is fine. Rough calc, probably ridden 750-800 trips with it. ;-)
hey there, did you install that binder attachment or did it come with the machine? looking for one and seeing either cheesy amazon stuff or expensive sailrite...
I do have a few questions if you could indulge me please.. What gauge needle do you use? What Weight thread/type do you use and the edging/grosgrain, is it 25mm/1"? Many thanks.
Really appreciate your series of videos. Ordered fabric and supplies today to do matching frame and bar bags snd a tool roll. Would you consider doing a feed bag video? Thanks!
Thanks for the great step by step! I just might be courageous enough to to do a bag. I am hoping to do a 5 inch round by 8 inch wide bag. What’s the best way to determine the length of my bag body material, and how much extra do I need to allow length and width for the seams? Thanks again!
Hey Michael, to calculate the length of fabric you need just multiply the diameter by pi, so a 5" bag would need about 15.7" of material. I tend to use either 5mm (3/16") or 10mm (3/8") for seam allowance.
Greatly informative video, thanks! I will be doing a full frame bag for myself shortly when I'll get my hands on a sewing machine. On the future plans: love the idea! I'm in my van, which I converted back in the UK, and I'm watching this video from Argentina parked at a lovely place by a river. I'm cheering you on on it! Cheers, J.
Thanks for the comment and well wishes! If you have any questions when you get round to making your bag feel free to get in touch via my website. I'd definitely rather be by a river in Argentina than locked down in the UK but hey, all in good time!
I am going to give this a try. The zipper..wow! I have not seen this done before. Thank you for sharing your knowledge here. I am hoping to make this for a gift for a friend.
Thank you very much for this informative video. It has taken me two days, and four times watching this video for me to make my own bag. I am so excited! I learned a whole lot here (I'm not that good with a sewing machine.). My bag came out very nice, as long as we don't look too closely at how those circles are sewn in... I would post a photo if I knew how. Again, kind thanks.
Hey John, loved watching these videos, I’m definitely going to give a few things a go. I’ve got 2 questions for you if you’d be so kind: 1. Are you going to do a video on a top tube bag? I really want to make one of these. 2. Are you going to sell the patterns? Would be good to be able to contribute back to you.
Glad to hear the videos have inspired you to give it a go! I could do a video on the top tube bag, I'll try get it done in the next couple of weeks., and I have made a few patterns but not sure what to charge for them, I'll do some research and put a post up on my instagram asap.
Was always curious how these bags were made, thanks for showing. Knowing nothing about sewing, what kind of sewing machine would you recommend for getting started and making a bag like this?
Kevin Koltz hey Kevin, thanks for checking out the channel! I’ve actually got a whole video on that subject, you can find it here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zFmRAQkzt3o.html
Recycla the zip tape itself is about 10mm wide so stitching close to the zipper when installing a zip this way ensures that the area you’re stitching has something to be sewn to. Ultimately though it’s just a tidy way of doing it, there’s no requirement for it to be done this way.
Hey, great tutorial. Exactly what I've been looking to do, and you no doubt saved me a lot of headache. Leaving your mistake in the video was especially appreciated, as you set a good example for how to work through it and move on. The best part by far is the sound of your machine though. Incredibly soothing.
I've yet to have any issues with it, although I do know over time it can stop working as well. However, it's fairly easy to replace without having to take the entire bag apart, so if it did lose it's "stickiness" so to speak, I know it would be an easy fix.
Great video! may I ask you what do you do or what material you use to give sturdiness to the bag itself? any kind of hard plastic liner? so it does not stay to baggy or floffy? Many thanks!
the material used is VX21, which due to it being a medium-weight material tends to hold its shape quite well. I don't use plastic liners in any of my bags, I dont find it to be necessary
Great video. Thank you so much for the guide. I just made my first bag. I'll need a few tries to get it right. Any hints to settings on the sowing machine? you clearly have a very pro one, whereas mine is a completely normal machine, and sometimes I have issues with the bobbin thread - it makes a mess.. and it isnt tight enough it seems, even though I tighten it, might be the fabric I am using though - I am doing it in a Tarpaulin PVC heavy grade, using a jeans needle and polyester thread. Hope you have a good suggestion :) feel like I've tried all different settings. Thanks!
