I just got gouache too! I got to pick something out from Amazon for my anniversary at work, and had a $25 limit lol. So I picked out the Himi gouache set. I’d been wanting some for years and for once didn’t have anything else I needed or wanted. It’s very similar to watercolor but also different! It’ll take some getting used to. Can’t wait to see you use it!!!

Hey Mits! I use Derwent pastel gouache. They come in a 12 pan set and I think they are fantastic. A really good price point and would work well for a starter set. I think it is lovely you involve your kiddos in your journaling and It is great to see you back in the hobo. That crinkle is wonderful! Jane X

I wouldn’t get the Himi - it’s plasticky and goes gross. It’s cheap though, so maybe if that’s more important, I’d get it. It depends what you want it for. It really depends on how you want to use it. If you’re going to squeeze it fresh from the tube, then most gouache is ok for your purposes. I use gouache dried from a palette (I squeeze it into pans and let it dry out) so I have to use a high quality gouache that rewets. Holbein or Shinhan are OK for that. I use Schmincke Horadam and Daniel Smith which are pretty expensive, but rewet beautifully.

Mits I’m glad you have a Hobonichi to play in 😀you can hear the excitement in your voice. I feel so sorry for you and daughter having to deal with the whole beetle thing. That’s terrible! What’s if the student or a family member had a bug phobia 😳

I agree. It shouldn't be called a school break if there is no break. They're just little kids.

Hello Mits & Hobonichi 🙂On Gouache: my one Holbein true Gouache is good quality. My one Windsor Newton color also quality, creamy to paint with. My favorite few tubes are Turner Acryla Gouache. I bought a few pastel colors. Craft brushes are good to use, flat brushes for broader areas. One round brush should do. I hope Your daughter has to care for a bug only this one summer. If it does not make it the teacher will learn something 🙂Bob Ross, my son loved watching him. He used to paint on canvas boards with me over the summer🎨🖌️🗺️💚

i think the sakura poster paints/nicker poster paints behave quite similar as gouache -- that's the same paints used by the people in animation studios back in the day. i believe nicker poster paint is the brand used by Kazuo Oga who is one of the background painters for Ghibli films ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FTZhMGMe3SU.html

So happy to see you back on your Hobinichi. I have been neglecting mine :(….about the gouache, I used regular gouache on mine and it works wonders! No great for layering in comparison to the acrylic gouache since it reactivates with water but definitely less transparent than watercolors. I have some videos on my channel for reference. Have a wonderful day!

hi Mits! I just wanted to comment letting you know that I grew up watching your videos, ever since I was a child and deeply into crafty things like scrapbooking, journalling, painting etc. I have been watching your videos. I will soon be 18 and it is just fascinating to me how I have genuinely grown up enjoying these videos and now that I am getting older and discovering more of my own persona/self through all the years that I have journaled alongside your videos, its lowkey making me a little emotional lol! great video as always, I absolutely love watching these while getting to sit down and create spreads in my own journal. <3

I have water soluble gouache. I am still learning how to layer because I keep mixing the layers together. With acrylic gouache, which is just (as far as I know) just acrylic paint that dries matte, the layers are permanent if you let them dry in between. Another difference is that the water soluble gouache you can have in an ordinary watercolour palette and let it dry in between uses, whereas the acrylic gouache needs to be used fresh from the tube. There are paper pads with waxed papers that is used for palettes. You just rip off the top paper when you are done and it’s ready for the next time you paint. Another palette option is a paper plate, they are waxed and easy to mix on. Also brushes used with acrylic needs to be washed thoroughly or they go hard and unusable. The water soluble gouache is more forgiving if you should forget to wash your brushes. Choosing one or the other depends on how you like to use the paints and store them. I chose the water soluble gouache because I wanted to be able to keep the paint in half cups in my watercolour palette. I chose the brand Schminke because that was what was available at my art store and I know they make good quality paints.

Nooo I lost my comment! To try to recap what I said earlier, I want to try gouache. But I have held back on that due to the cost. I know that someone mentioned HIMI gouache in the comments. Aesthetically, I think they look amazing. But the problem with them is that they do eventually dry out over time. After they get cracked and dried out, you have to spritz them with water, and really put in some effort to reactivate them. I am too lazy for that, so I would prefer to get gouache out of a tube and use a flower palette instead. But, I can stand by Sakura Acryla Gouache! Do you remember my TV audition? I made all the animations and artwork for it in Sakura Acryl Gouache! You can buy them pretty much anywhere in Japan, and they are really great quality for the price. The only problem that I've had with them is that it can be difficult to replace colours individually. In the past, I have repurchased a whole box, when I just needed to replace two or three colours. I have fallen behind on regular journaling. Lately, I've been focusing on mastering guitar by practising every day. Just this past weekend, I found a really great deal on an electric guitar on Facebook Market place. I just need to get an amp and some pedals. I think I just need a tuner, a looper, and some distortion, and I think I'll be golden. A three piece pedal board! When you start paying more attention to what your favourite bands are using, the rabbit holes run deep. I want to get the Kurt Cobain Jaguar, but I can't justify the price of that right now. Even the Jag-Stang is pretty expensive. You don't really need the top of the line gear when you're just starting out. I ended up getting an Epiphone, but a lot of people downvoted me on r/guitar. People can be snobbish about a headstock, lol. If you managed to get one of the Tokyo inserts, it comes with a pad of postcards. Maybe that will make your daughter's project more fun. I think it's best to get all the work out of the way first, and then you will have the rest of the day to do stuff. As a master procrastinator myself, I realise that is easier said than done!

Why do they force people to take care of bugs if you they want to? How is that a learning experience? Just a traumatic story to tell 20 years down the line. Id throw them out and pretend i didnt know what happened to them😅 seriously. So weird.

@@MyLifeMitsGurl the HIMI is not a good option 😱 I don't know any artist who appreciates their uneven rendering… 😢 You only need 5 colors, not an entire expensive set: white, black, + primary yellow, red and blue. You can do anything with these. Amsterdam is a pretty good brand. ❤

Hello Mits from USA. I think I have watched your videos since last year. I love your style. I collect things, but it never makes it into a journal. I went to Japan last year, and I went to Asakusa’s visitor center and I was able to get the free washi tape. Thank you for the tip 🥰❤. Currently, I love eating avocado toast with lots of pepper and pumpkin seeds. Thanks for the inspirations.

This was so much fun, I have been doing a lot of watercolor in my 5 year lately. Ialways think its not very good when Im doing it. But when I look back on it later I am so happy with how it looks. It brings back a memory more then just writing does.
