This channel is also dedicated to exploring and advocating for the preservation of the historic R.M.S. Queen Mary in Long Beach, California; uncovering the issues behind her current condition and seeking creative ways to bring her back.
Hello, my name is Matthew! I have been a long term big ship enthusiast since childhood. I wrote several articles for the West Coast chapter of the Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA) in the early 2000s. I have been privileged to board ships like QE2, QM2, etc., for journalistic endeavors. I also contributed to the 2010 S.S. United States calendar where my drawing was featured in the month of April.
Cameron’s movie is so special to me because of the way it looks, they nailed some indescribable subconscious thing that just makes you feel like you are there. It straight up looks real. The glow of the sun is literally real. While the 2012 miniseries looks like a BBC television production with modern actors. It has a meta aesthetic to it, it looks like a period piece and not something real. I look at it and see actors on a set. I look at Cameron’s film and I feel the wind and the temperature and the sounds. It’s just simply vivid.
That is so different. I guess it makes sense that they would sell needles back in the day. More people probably sewed. The spider webs are really cool.
Yeah...I felt that, too. I get why people see it that way. But it was chic, daring, quintessential Mid Century Modern design at its MOST daring, to be sure. Certain spaces, like the Ballroom Lounge and Observation lounges and Smoking Room are unmistakably chic and streamlined!

@@jeffprice6421 They’re struggling to find a new pier for her. Philadelphia municipal government is pushing to remove her. Though an extension to stay there until December is underway and a huge fundraising effort has been underway for a while now. They’re really pushing for tours which I would love to participate in if I could. Lot of completely understandable cynicism around her rescue, but I’m at least hopeful. Tons of money needed to put her into Queen Mary-like condition. But with the right backer, many possibilities for her empty shell.

The only thing that breaks my heart is poor Morgan getting dropped by Garrett and Andrew because when I watch this back, if I was 20 I would also misread this as garret being *my* friend and not my older brothers friend
I cycle a lot, so I don't have a lot of opportunity to dress up. Or much of a point. But I'm really Italian. So I should try dressing more Italian more often. Just not like a mobster. lol
Didn't know there was so much cool and interesting history you could get out of just baggage tags. They are really bespoke when you think about it. Like, you wouldn't see anything like it today. I see why you like collecting them.
@@TheOceanChannel2 It’s either not looking good for the First Lady or else looking like the denouement of her metamorphosis. The more people at least know, the more conversation and the more attention can be brought to even famous investors. Really want to be updated about the New York project, though.

@@sometimesiwi Thank you. That means a lot! I’ve discerned some of the reasons. And exposure is always one of them. And a BIG one. When you’re not already in with the Astors and the Boston Dawsons, it does play a significant role. Type of videos is another. So, do spread the word 😅. Yes, being recognized for my work is part of wanting to grow, but there’s a much bigger vision and that’s bringing the golden age of ocean travel back to life, uncovering the past to help our modern perceptions and misperceptions of it, and helping the Queen Mary be put back on the map again and seeing her restored to her proper former glory.

I rather like the 1953 Titanic. Same amount of sappy romance as 1997, but at half the length. And I started weeping over Mr and Mrs Strauss. Walter Lord has an acknowledgment in his book for a researcher at 20th Century-Fox.

I’ve been fascinated with Carnival’s acquisition of Costa’s ships and marketing them to the American market as an exotic Italian adventure since day one!
I was so curious about that as well. A good financial and practical move, as it looks. That Costa funnel is stunning in person! I realized I've never seen a Costa ship in person! The funnel alone makes it all worth it, let alone the Mediterranean'd interiors.

Thank you for your encouraging words. Being such a well known RU-vidr who still has tons of fans, and even those who don’t like him anymore have said they like this series so I really wanted to shed some light on how damaging it is. If you could share this with fellow ship friends or people you think would benefit from its message, I would really appreciate it. Hate to beg for engagement. I just worked hard on it and know that there are a lot out there who could benefit to hear about it. No pressure. I’m just throwing it out there.

Great video! My favourite has always been Cameron’s version, but I’ve also watched the 1996 film multiple times. I recently watched A Night To Remember for the first time though, and thought it felt almost like seeing a history book played out in film form since it’s so focused on portraying the facts, while Cameron’s film is better at capturing the feeling and emotional experience of being on the ship, in my opinion, mostly thanks to the story and music. I actually think focusing on the two (fictional) characters was a good decision and made the film at least more impactful than ANTR for me, thus better conveying the tradgedy of the disaster. But I get why someone would prefer the older film as well, it’s just about what kind of style you like. Now I’m also a little curious of what you’d think about the Titanic video games, like the Hidden Mysteries ones. I kinda like their stories and find them at least quite interesting.
Very excited to come to the Queen Mary next week . However Ive emailed and called and messaged and got no response. I am a medium and run a paranormal tiktok channel . im traveling from nebraska to visit. was hoping to explore a bit but no one answers the phone or email etc.
I, too, have had trouble getting in contact with the Queen Mary via telephone. And I've known someone else trying to find out things they couldn't find on the website who had trouble as well getting a hold of someone. And this was for an outing with a group of people. I don't know what the issue might be with them. I hope it's something practical like being short-staffed. With all the re-organizing, I hope they get a system down. The website [has become] a little all over the place in my experience, too. I found out by visiting the ship fairly recently that you don't need to book a tour in order to board any longer. But I didn't see anything that verified this. Hopefully, soon, all information will be a lot easier to achieve. I'm sorry you've been having trouble.

I cruised on celebration as a kid in like 2005 or something and it was a bit run down even then. I've gotten super into watching cruise ship reviews on RU-vid and to be honest i actually like the design of these more compared to the new mega ships Royal Caribbean has and the sparky/shiny modern MSC ships. Those ships don't have the kind of personality and uniqueness of these old ones to me. The MSC ones are so bland and give off that millennial grey/glam style and royal Caribbean ships are just big ugly monsters and look like big shopping malls. The old carnival cruises genuinely have personality and fun to them even if they're often gaudy. Im also a little bit into watching videos on interior design and it seems the minimalist designs are starting to seem dated and post modern and maximalist style is "in" right now especially with gen z. I don't know much about interior design of public and commercial spaces but i wonder if we'll start to see this shift in design reflected in cruise ships someday?
I remember sailing Majesty and Monarch of the Seas and will be on Carnival Elation soon. Just got off Icon of the Seas too. RCI got it right with the Voyager class and they'll probably sail for 50 years.
