Edmund O'Brien is one of my favorite film noir actors. He is fantastic in this movie. I love the cameo's of Vito Scotti and Carolyn Jones. The chief Emil Meyer plays the best cop ever. Love this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay I've read a lot of comments on here about "physics" and what not. You all do understand this was made in 1953 and we didn't supposedly go to the moon until 1969? The reason they made the movie like this is because no one knew anything about the moon or what it'd be like there. It was all a guess from imagination. Does anyone remember The Outer Limits when it first came out in 1963? The first show was about a guy who was preparing to be an astronaut. It was ridiculously corny and you really didn't know what was going on until the end of the show but that's what kept you on your toes throughout the pilot show. But... that's what I like about these 1950's sci-fi movies. Literally it was all imagination, and while many people today don't really appreciate imaginative movies anymore as they always have to have to shoot holes in space travel nowadays in movies I enjoy the ride. I don't really give a crap about people's "professional" take on their physics degrees and their science degrees. I watch movies to be entertained by imagination. I don't go to the movies to be educated. If I want that I'll watch an educational program. Movies are just that.... there's supposed to be fun and entertaining. Just enjoy the darned ride, fellas. And no we don't live in the friggin' Matrix. It's a friggin' movie.
The titular brouhaha doesn't actually occur until the last 5 minutes, but this hodgepodge does have a couple of distinguishing characteristics: King Kong's original leading lady plays the mom (Fay Wray giving a poignantly outdated performance with not a scream to be heard), and for the first 20 minutes this comes off as a MUSICAL, with elements lster to be seen in both West Side Story and Grease (before it starts ripping off Rebel Without a Cause with both hands). Don't miss the pasty white guy in swim trunks doing the endless calypso number complete with accent, which is so culturally insensitive you can almost see Al Jolson whipping out his notepad! The hero's name is Rick Martin; had it been RickY Martin and had he treated us to a performance of "Livin' La Vida Loca" this might have rated a 7/10...but as it is we'll settle for a generous 4.
As a straight crime thriller, this would have been a winner. The insane farce of the other "guard" was a hoot, though. This was a pretty good story, with engaging actors. But seriously - Were ALL men in the 30s completely oblivated by love-goggles?! Thanks BT!!
How could he possibly have expected her to hang around with a ruthless killer? The acting, the plot, indeed everything about this film is laughably bad. Who said Matthau was a decent actor?
Nice respite from the insane political world and ever depressing news of the day. Thanks for uploading this very old, but entertaining, b/w classic movie! 😊
An excellent story with good actors makes this film a winner! The audio felt like like listening to it down the line of one of those old candlestick phones.
If uber-Poverty Row studio PRC had a dime for every accent in this picture that's overdone, misplaced or non-existent, they'd be MGM! I love how Miss V (Lola Lane, an appealing actress who looks adorable in oversized hats) is a Russian spy posing as a German but has an American accent. (Maybe to come off as neutral?) This is one of several Hollywood productions made during WW2 to promote American-Russian friendship against the Nazis. Warner Bros. got into big trouble the following decade for making the pro-Stalin Mission to Moscow, but I'm sure this little cheapie, being PRC and all, went completely unnoticed. Talk about going undercover! 5/10.
