My name is Don and I live in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. I am a motorcycle enthusiast, particularly interested in sports, touring, commuting and mechanical aspects. I have a Masters degree in mechanical engineering (MEng), but am really just someone who likes to maintain his motorcycles - to tinker with, play with, and improve their function. My bikes: a 2011 BMW R1200R Classic and a Honda CB650R. I have no links to BMW, but do share their motto.... make life a ride!

I want to say thank you!! I was doing shims on my CB500X and two of the shims went flying. I found one and not the other. I was unsure how to pull this side case off and so this video was extremely helpful. I still did not find the shim but this pretty much convinced me it is not in the engine as this was the only side it could be on. I always make a donation to charity when a video helps me save money, so I will be doing that once again. Thanks again Doug. Canada

Why didnt you just replace the damaged black part

Yes, that would have been an easy 90% fix, I agree, but there was some wee scratches on the crankcase also and replacement cost was remarkably low, so I did that too

Hi there. Wondering what was your opinion on the cb650r and commuting side of it? Is it boring or juts great? Thx heaps
@donaldomoto
@donaldomoto 8 месяцев назад
I found the CB650R light, narrow and zippy for commuting. Good on fuel. Much prefer the suspension and size of my BMW R1200R for highway and touring, but its a big wide heavy bike and though I do commute on it now (have sold the CB650R for financial reasons), if commuting was all that I did, I would have kept the Honda!

Beautiful video mate. I see your bimmer has the dreaded fuel strip malfunction issue. Something to live with I guess. Thanks for sharing.
@donaldomoto
@donaldomoto 8 месяцев назад
Thanks! Yes - fuel strip stuffed so I just keep a track of fuel in tank via trip meter mileage. Have tried to 'zap' it, and other online cures, but problem eventually recurs. So, as soon as I get over 200 km or so, I keep an eye out for fuel stations. System works well - but can require some planning when country travelling in Australia due to large distances between fuel stops in some cases. Can push to over 300 km when on highway, but prefer not to. Thanks again, Don

@@donaldomoto there’s a reason why ask you about this gasket. A week ago I accompanied my friend with the same bike like you to a garage to do full maintenance, when the guy from garage take off the crankcase cover, i was surprised there’s no Gasket, and i ask the guy “wait, no gasket?” And he said yes, this bike got no gasket on the clutch cover. I was in disbelief and start to look gasket parts for cb650r neo on the internet and i search video about clutch cover replacement and found your video 😂 You just Verify everything Thanks for the video bro💪🏻

Thank you for this video! Just ordered a replacement roundel for my 2012 R1200 RT and this is exactly what I needed to see! I originally thought I was going to have to remove the fairing. Glad that I do not have to! One question though, the back of the roundel looks as if it has 2 pegs...does the fairing have holes are markers to line up those two pegs? Thanks!!
@donaldomoto
@donaldomoto 10 месяцев назад
Thanks - glad it was of some help. No, the tank didn't have any holes for those pegs on my R1200R. Might be different on the fairing of your RT?

@@donaldomoto I just removed the old roundel (thanks to you) and yes, there are actually 2 holes in the fairing to line up the new badge with. New one is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. There is a lot of the adhesive left on the fairing that I need to clean off, but you are right....I don't believe there needs to be any additional glue added....it wasn't easy getting it off, even with a hair dryer and fishing line....but I got it done! :D. Great video. I've had the 550, 660, 590LM, XT and I've ordered the XT2. What I really like about the devices is they are not compromised. They are designed to do one job and one job well. Particularly if you head into the mountains in Spain (or wherever), there'll be long stretches with no phone signal, the heat (or rain) can be intense and you need something you can rely on. Phones are also becoming less and less suitable for use on motorcycles as they continue to be more complex. Finally I love that when I'm out on my bike I don't have to look at my phone. I spend enough time on it already, it's nice to have it out of the way.

Appreciate the time in making this. I've currently got a small oil leak in the rocker cover gasket, is it a similar process to replace? would you recommend doing the rocker cover by yourself or a bike mechanic?
@donaldomoto
@donaldomoto 11 месяцев назад
It's impossible to answer that question. It all depends on your mechanical skills and proficiency - if you're not mechanically inclined, then best leave it to a mechanic. But if you have the skills, tools and the right information, then its probably not a difficult job

@@donaldomoto hello my Zumo Xt in the last 3 years has been in for repair 2 times. Both times it would not start and now every now and then message saying lost external power and will turn off. As for the route planning who ever came up with the software needs a kicking. Base camp is a waste of time. When editing the route on the unit it can't be saved. Every time I use it I just start getting angry and swearing at it. Glad I'm going back to TomTom

Thanks for the video Don! Helped me make up my mind on ordering one for my new 300L Rally. I think it will look stellar right above the dash at the top of the screen. I don't mind getting lost, but a wrong turn in the middle of outback SA doesn't really appeal to me too much.

Matt, good luck with it. It's now 6 months since I bought it and I'm still happy I did for the reasons mentioned in this vid. But, I haven't found the trip planning capability of the Garmin software/apps to be anywhere near as user-friendly as Google maps. That being said, getting a google maps-planned route onto your Garmin Zumo XT is not super intuitive. I've got it pretty-well down pat now, but this video by Richie Vida helped. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YNWQ2F0JjMs.html

What a waste of money I’ve been biking from the 1960’s how on earth did I manage without satnavs I enjoyed the challenge. Well now I have a hand me down iPhone with google maps. Well the phone was free the app was the quadlock was a sale deal no problem with vibration or water. I’ve had the iPhone with the quadlock case on my little sailing dinghy no prob with any water, vibration so I’m afraid I don’t go with your recommendations I’ll spent the hundreds on fuel.

Antes de torquear se deben instalar todos los tornillos y secuencialmente se les da una precarga secuencial, después con el torquímetro se aprietan a Torque nominal. Es mejor.

I have also got a Garmin Sumo XT that I mounted on my bike. I did not like the phone being open to the elements and vibration or even being taken. I did spend a bit more money on a mount that I got from Touratech. This actually locks the Garmin into the frame so that it can not be un clipped easy. There is also a Ram pin lock you can fit instead of the wing nut. This again gives extra security.
