Honda CB650R (2019) - new crankcase cover

Tired of looking daily at a scratched right side engine casing on my commuting bike, I decided to purchase a brand new engine casing from Honda and substitute it onto my 2019 CB650R. It was a comparatively inexpensive process (parts and materials cost around AUD $120) and relatively straightforward mechanically, provided a few principles are followed. In this video, I document the successful replacement of this right side engine casing (or crankcase cover), and suggest some important steps to take and pitfalls to avoid. I hope it may be useful to others.

Donald I know what you mean. I have the Honda CBR650R which is that bike with the fairing and I had yours but the wind blast was too much and so I traded it for the R and the fairing helps so much with the wind, anyway I accidentally tipped the bike over (Thank you R&G Sliders) and got a little scuffing on the exact same spot as you have. Cheers. Mike.

Thanks so much for the vid. I just picked up a '23 model. First day out and dropped it. Left a nice little scuff on the crank case. For now I'll wear it with pride but when I do my first oil change I'll replace this at the same time. Cheers, mate!

I want to say thank you!! I was doing shims on my CB500X and two of the shims went flying. I found one and not the other. I was unsure how to pull this side case off and so this video was extremely helpful. I still did not find the shim but this pretty much convinced me it is not in the engine as this was the only side it could be on. I always make a donation to charity when a video helps me save money, so I will be doing that once again. Thanks again Doug. Canada

Any additional tips to insert the clutch knob from the engine side to the case, I am trying for 2 days to get the cover on. It's just not going in. When it does, the clutch lever is on the wrong angle and will not rotate towards the cable like you did at 17.50

Why didnt you just replace the damaged black part
@donaldomoto
@donaldomoto 6 месяцев назад
Yes, that would have been an easy 90% fix, I agree, but there was some wee scratches on the crankcase also and replacement cost was remarkably low, so I did that too

Just take care to get the right advice (torque settings, workshop manual instructions etc) for your particular bike before starting on this job. You don't want things coming loose or breaking off inside the crankcase! Good luck

Appreciate the time in making this. I've currently got a small oil leak in the rocker cover gasket, is it a similar process to replace? would you recommend doing the rocker cover by yourself or a bike mechanic?
@donaldomoto
@donaldomoto Год назад
It's impossible to answer that question. It all depends on your mechanical skills and proficiency - if you're not mechanically inclined, then best leave it to a mechanic. But if you have the skills, tools and the right information, then its probably not a difficult job

Hi, I just want to ask one thing, After applying the gasket, did you wait a while for it to dry or did you install it immediately?
@donaldomoto
@donaldomoto Месяц назад
@@tekeristonline No, I immediately brought the surfaces together and tightened bolts lightly until gasket material began to squeeze out. Then after 90 mins, tightened bolts to correct torque settings. This was as per the instructions for the particular brand of gasket material I used. Other types may have different instructions? I used Permatex "The Right Stuff" - item number 25228.

Antes de torquear se deben instalar todos los tornillos y secuencialmente se les da una precarga secuencial, después con el torquímetro se aprietan a Torque nominal. Es mejor.

Hi there. Wondering what was your opinion on the cb650r and commuting side of it? Is it boring or juts great? Thx heaps
@donaldomoto
@donaldomoto 11 месяцев назад
I found the CB650R light, narrow and zippy for commuting. Good on fuel. Much prefer the suspension and size of my BMW R1200R for highway and touring, but its a big wide heavy bike and though I do commute on it now (have sold the CB650R for financial reasons), if commuting was all that I did, I would have kept the Honda!
