Welcome to SubTerra Organics!

We are committed to growing food naturally without the use of harmful chemicals! Sustainability is our main goal by using renewable resources and growing perennial edibles, herbs and medicinal plants along with our annual vegetable crops. We are also a certified nursery with the state of Tennessee.

Our journey started the spring of 2016 turning approximately an acre+ of once rolling pasture into highly productive gardens. We focus on non-traditional growing techniques such as no till heavily wood chip mulched beds commonly called The Back to Eden method (BTE), preparing 2 50' hugelklture strawberry windrows, a future aquaponics greenhouse and other techniques as we continue to flesh out our intended educational demonstration gardens.

Best of all we hope to help educate you by providing transparency to our progress and the techniques we use to accomplish our end goal! Come join us in this endeavor by subscribing to our channel!

I'm happy I found your channel. I live in the the greeneville TN area, just east of you. We have some pretty heavy clay soil over here, but it is fertile. I've had about 5 or 6 Loads of wood chips delivered here from the utility arborist. I started my garden this year, so it's gonna be a little rough this first year. No chickens yet. I was thinking about spraying diluted urea on the wood chip pile to get them to break down quicker, what are your thoughts on that?
@Subterraorganics
@Subterraorganics 2 месяца назад
Hey neighbor! To clarify your thought process, you will be planting in the clay soil not in the woodchips therefore even though this is your first year and have fresh chips definitely doesn't mean it will be rough...you just don't have the added benefit of COMPOSTED chips :) Our clay is nutritious, it just lacks organic matter and moisture holding capacity and that is where the chip covering helps as well as the compost created as the chips are breaking down. Our first year was great and it just keeps getting better and better ;-) As to spraying on the "wood chip pile"...it doesn't have to be diluted as the wood chips are dense and will absorb and use in the breaking down process. You could put blood meal, 10-10-10 or really any nitrogen source on the pile to inoculate it. My guidance would be different if you are side dressing plants but you said on the "pile" and there is lots of room for error if it will sit for a bit.

@Subterraorganics thanks for the quick and thorough response. I come from Connecticut, been here 9 yrs now. Love it here. We had nice loam in CT but the trade-off was glacial till boulders everywhere. My first yr here I planted a garden and really struggled with the persistent weeds. No wood chips or mulch, it was terrible. This yr, I rottilled, and covered with cardboard and 6inches of relatively fresh wood chips from last fall. It seems to be working well to keep most of the weeds down except some of the rhizome weeds. I just try to stay on top of pulling the weeds, so far it's been pretty easy to stay on top of it. The wood chips are breaking down pretty quickly in the garden with all the rain we've gotten. I'm gonna start a separate compost pile with wood chips and kitchen and garden scraps to see if I can get some good compost for next season. I'm also gonna try another compost pile with just urea to see how that works out. Thanks again.

@@marcellemay7721 Food for thought...."roots in the soil" will make your chips break down faster. Soil life increases around the base of plants, i'm sure you've seen all the activity when you uproot a plant. So if you can live with some weeds they are only helping the system as a whole. We have a tendency to just let things grow and clean up when restart beds or feel things are being encroached on. Some common 'weeds" here also have value such as plantain, dock, mullein, lactuca etc and beneficial to have around you once you learn how to use them. Sounds like you prepped well and likely the last time for the tiller :) In the early stages of no til wood chip covering just watch for the plants looking chlorotic and don't hesitate to fertilize...fish emulsion is our choice. You can use it often and it's non burning. Also can use comfrey water of which we have plants available. You can always message me through facebook our page is also SubTerra Organics there is a link in the description :)

To create a right angle then you measure from one edge three meters (or feet or yards) then on the opposite side of this edge you measure four meters (or feet or yards) and if between this opening you have five meters (or feet or yards) then you have a right angle 90" degrees and that means that on the other side all the angles are the same, that is 90" degrees! Nitrogen is the nutrient for growth. None of what you mentioned is a form of nitrogen other than potentially your "weed fertilizer" of which I am not sure what that means. You also mentioned "re-potting" so the only nutrients available are in your potting soil depending on what you are using and whatever else you give the plant.
@pmorton7960
@pmorton7960 Год назад
@@Subterraorganics I started off with a 6-6-6 fertilizer. We had a 3 day rain spell maybe a week after planting, but the red pepper plant just seems stuck. Compost, potting soil and some black soil for potting mix. I give it pretty much what I give the other peppers. I don't want to over fertilize. The weed fertilizer is just grass and weed cuttings left in water to break down, and diluted for watering.

Just a point of irritation...Peppers and chili's are not the same thing. Pepper plants are "Piper" genus. (spices) Chili plants are "Capsicum". (actually nightshades) Combining the names is common, yet incorrect. Kind of like calling a tomato a vegetable, yet it is a fruit. You are growing chili's.

I topped 2 of my 5 jalafuego plants this year, and doing so caused all the dormant growth nodes (suckers) to kick into high gear after a few days, so the forthcoming plant will definitely become much bushier. One quirk I noticed however is the tendency ot the topmost tier of leaves to turn upside down, and slowly begin drooping ... I assume its to avoid starving the new growth of the light it needs. Anyway, I had to trim off half of the upside down leaves so far.

Red wigglers will double their population about every 2+ months or so. While you could feed worms to chickens you will need more than a 5 gal bucket to raise enough ...which will ultimately depend on how many chickens you have. Oh man I know you’re from Chicago!! You got right to the point, explained it quick and simple, and broke it down to what I’ve been saying! Just use a bucket! Lol. Actually I’m getting a little fancy pants. I have an older unused 5 gallon Igloo water jug with a spigot on it already. Also had this chicken batter pro Cajun double sided Tupperware looking thing, said to myself, one clear side is my bottom inside the jug. The red ring fits perfectly on top. Other end keeps moisture in. Then I drilled some small air holes to keep some air flow but retain a lot of moisture. The clear lid keep worms away from light and surface or wanted to crawl out. Jug would keep them relatively moist and it’s insulated so no drastic temperature changes. I get a tea from the spigot and I’ll sift out the castings by hand or by cup as I use them or until it fills up. Came out really awesome I’ve learned so much from various people and you really gave it the simplest ways I was thinking of it already. So thanks Brother for being a true Chicago Native as I am and speaking my language. I got the hell outta that City and I’m in Colorado now! Hahaha but I do miss me a good Beef Sammich and Pizza!!
