It was spring break 1992, and a trip to a beach didn't interest me. Instead, I satisfied an urge to start photographing malls before they changed forever.

I bought a cheap 35mm film camera and set off. In ten years, I had explored parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and beyond (and upgraded the camera along the way). But much had already changed by then, and I now look back grateful for what I collected during that time.

This project is tinged with nostalgia for some places that were a backdrop to so many of our lives. But the mall phenomenon also presented its share of challenges. Now that the mall craze is over, how do we create remarkable gathering spaces going forward? The past might offer answers.

I hope you enjoy the memories.
