Did Longs yesterday for my 16th overall, 14th this year and have to agree. What a gem of a trail. Honestly can't wait to be back on it for different routes and different seasons.
I’m a young aspiring 18 year old who’s trying to get all 58. I have 11 so far but they’re all pretty easy day hikes. Any tips on starting to learn how to really scramble and meet people who know how to scramble?
Good for you! For me, it was the Colorado Mountain Club. I took their Scrambling Course and gained experience there, and I made friends I still climb with today.
A class 3 route up Princeton? I'll have to check it out! Do you have a GPX track that you could link, or any recommended sites that have decent information? Haven't done Princeton yet, but I do want to avoid the standard route (winter or summer).
This is a great way to get beyond the standard route, though longer and more committing. We followed the map and route description on slowlans.longmayyourange.com authored by Justin Simoni.
wow very cool video man.... the view is amazing... your shoes and socks caught my attention.... what type of shoes are those ?..... and i think we wear the same type of socks but thought i'd ask... myself i usually wear the long very thin nylon dress socks you can buy at walmart , they're comfy as hell
Mother Nature calls the shot as always. I went up Tab via Jennings Creek TH earlier this summer and there seems to be a nice path from the west ridge of Tab down and up a beautiful basin to Cronin and Antero. Have a video with drone shot if you want to check it out
@claytonconover8074 I was talking here about combining Unc with Wetterhorn from matterhorn creek trailhead, but going up Unc itself from the Nellie creek trail is a good option too. There is a description on 14ers.com
made my first run through of all 14 in a summer back to back to back, couldn’t even dream of doing this line. My teacher Mr. Nolan at Manitou Springs Highschool unfortunately lost his legs on a 14er, I don’t think there’s any relation but I’m pretty sure it was on a sawatch range 14er as well… always scared the crap out of me. these mountains are absolutely insane to link up just as you said because of having to descend into a deep basin then re-ascending the next peak over and over and over. Goodluck man.
would be rad if you made a video series documenting the journey from scouting through the actual trip. hope the shoulder keeps feeling better. i had an open latarjet and bankart repair on mine for chronic dislocations. feels more stable than my good one now
Great list! My only major disagreement is on Bross - the standard route is definitely F, but the S Gully (from kite lake) was a really pleasant easy snow climb that I'd recommend to anyone looking for an intro snow climb or a warmup hike! Probably B-C tier with that route
It’s funny you mention how you didn’t catch any storms on Sherman because I got hit with one on the summit while doing my first 14er last weekend. When my hair started standing up I lost my shit lol thinking I was going to get struck, I probably wasn’t too far away from it. My head kept feeling zaps of static while I was ducked by a rock
How dangerous is Pyramid? I have done about ten 14ers, including Longs Peak, and am in decent shape. I am just wondering if it is as terrifying as the Bells or Capitol.
@mgoboski it's less dangerous than those, not as loose. Routefinding is key - know where you want to be and look for cairns. I'd wear a helmet as the goats can kick down rocks. It's a good one, steep and scenic!
As a local, I have climbed this, and my friends of all climbed it several times. None of us have ever summitted via the ridge or from Bomber glacier side. We make a direct approach from upper read Lake and attain the diagonal crack that leads to the summit ridge. The Ridgewalk from bomber is treacherous as you found out. Also trying to attain it from the bomber glacier side, exposes you to a lot of exposure, and you have to cross the bergshrund. If you try it again, try it this way. Summitpost is wrong.
Thank you, Brandon! I really appreciate you sharing that info. Looking back at photos, I can definitely see that line. Nothing beats local expertise! I'd love the chance to get back up there soon.
With Redcloud and Sunshine, a great way to make a loop is to traverse to Sundog from Sunshine. You get a bit of scrambling and a super aesthetic ridge walk!
Great series. Will take me a couple more years to check them all off and then the fun really begins. Like you said, the 14ers are truly just a tip of the iceberg, an introduction to Colorado mountaineering. Hope you have a quick recovery after surgery and get back out there soon. Subbed
It would be cool to be able to see all the mountains as a single tier list. I enjoyed watching these as a slow going checklist guy. 12 of the 14ers down :)
