I feel like in the context of a dream, it would not be considering "doing the thing" if you just imagine yourself doing. I didn't think this at first because dreams are all in your head, but then what is the rest of reality? I do believe that reality exists separate from us perceiving it, but all we can do with that reality is perceive it (if that makes sense). E.g. I can run my hands under water, feel the coolness of the liquid pouring over my skin, but if I imagined that experience I would not actually feel that sensation. In a dream, however, I would feel the water running over my hands; even if the sensation is dulled by the dream, sensations can be dulled when your awake with alcohol or nerve damage or any number of things. So in order to "do the thing," you either have to be experiencing that thing or believe so strongly that you are that you physically react as though it were happening. (I'm not gonna proof read this, I hope it's legible lol)

Late to the conversation, but where's the distinction lie between imagining and dreaming? Is it simply that one's a conscious decision and one's subconscious? To my mind, if you weren't consciously imagining yourself in the situation you saw on the computer, you were merely dreaming it. A more obvious way of looking at it would be in a scenario where you were walking in a dream. You wouldn't question whether you were walking or not; it's a dream, you weren't consciously moving your legs, so you weren't actually walking. I have aphantasia, so dreams work differently for me, but I presume you have an omnipotent perspective in dreams, not just omnipotent understanding of the situation. So rather than imagining, it sounds like you shifted from a third-person perspective to a first-person perspective, from considering what you were seeing to considering what you were feeling, which feels like a shift in "planes of reality" in hindsight.
from my own experience, there is always a deeply personal meaning i can take away from a dream. Maybe this one could be to help you differentiate the planes of existence within your mind, the imaginative one vs the one you can enact with your physical body. I havent had any lucid dream experiences but this one rings on the cuff of a very explorative mental headspace. Lucid dreaming can be incredibly fulfilling to achieve real life goals via the mental plane. Its all practice to translate your inner language of feeling &symbology. It helps to think of the dream world just as real as the one we are materialized into, and your imagination just as physical as your fingers and toes. It really is the reality of the situation.

i think dreams are your stream of consciousness in visual full hallucination rather than an internal monologue (or other way you perceive your stream of conscious while awake), so if thats true they would be the same thing

I think imagining is different than dreaming it because you don’t necessarily have cognitive control. You have knowledge, you know what the rules are but you didn’t decide them consciously and they aren’t the rules that apply when you consciously imagine
⚠- WARNING - MUCH YAP - ⚠ It's wild to me that every memory we have is recorded with every sense simutaneously. Our brain doesn't stop working when we sleep. It has to do something, but instead of just placing memories exactly as they are (sometimes it happens depending on how strong the memory is, PTSD for example), it triggers all the senses at the same time, thus creating "consciousness." Clarity varies from person to person, hence their capability of lucid dreaming. Guayusa tea gives people more vivid dreams (also more prone to lucid dreaming) because it has L-theanine, an amino acid that makes you more tranquil; antioxidants, and a few alkaloids like theobromine and caffeine, making your mind clearer, enhancing memory and energy. So the distance we have from lucidity in our dreams reminds me a lot of how we lightly dissociate in our daily lives, from person to person even feeling that everything is like a blur and we're in the back of our minds as an observer. I think that living our lives in front of a computer or a phone fucked with our brains's perception of time over time. I have a friend that told me something really terrifiying: She told me that (since she's in the majority of time in front of her PC), when she is hanging out with friends IRL she feels odd, as in feeling like when she's using her PC and fully immersed everything feels more present, like time doesn't pass slower or faster. That could have something to do with other shit like introversion, comfort zone, but I really think it has something to do with the concept of our brains witnessing a form of reality from a certain distance, even contributing on creating dissociative states more commonly on society. Like David Lynch said, films are like dreams. And we have it as the closest from witnessing a dream in front of us. Hell, like even a first person perspective in a movie or a game. So our brain does everything to make sense out of it. Our prefrontal cortex, responsible for logical thinking, gets triggered depending on the energy levels we have, since it's not fully active as we sleep. Is like more random, but the probability oscilates a lot. So if boosted, metacognition takes place during sleep. Metacognition is when you ask yourself about how the brain functions. Brain questioning itself. So like, one of the techniques to lucid dreaming is to reality check (to create a habit of checking the amount of fingers you have, clocks, etc, various times during the day so you can do it while dreaming, thus becoming lucid). If you see a huge giraffe tapping that magnificent zaza in your room you usually wouldn't question during a dream. But if the prefrontal cortex is active enough, that change in chemistry and electricity in your brain makes you raise the question and in that specific time, be more aware of it. So if you are dreaming seeing something, lucid or not, and imagine yourself doing something, the DMN (Default Mode Network, responsible for day dreaming/introspection) is also active, so by chance (also the awareness of it) and alterations of energy, creates the questioning.
I feel like imagining yourself doing something in a dream is a lot less controlled than day dreaming about it. For myself when im dreaming I dont know im dreaming until after I wake up. It feels like its actually happening and I dont have any control on what happens. Im just along for the ride. But if im day dreaming about something I have a better grasp on the situation and what not. I feel like it depends on each person and how they perceive a dream. I know some people, like you said, have an omniscient knowledge on everything happening. Then with myself it feels like real life in the sense of I have an idea on whats going to happen next but it doesnt always happen. Sometimes when im dreaming I think about what might happen next and sometimes it happens other times it doesnt. I hope that makes sense and answers the question lmao.
