Legit appreciate your commentary on this movie. You have great movie foresight and speak about character arc, spons and turns that make the story so great. You do commentary justice. Thanks!!!
Denzel Washington was strongly considered for the role of eight-ball, He would later say he wished he had gotten the part. Arnold Schwarzenegger was offered the role of Animal Mother, but turned it down to star in The Running Man.
This is a small glimpse into the marine corps life. I went to boot camp at Parris Island in December 2003. I worked with a guy who was in the Marines in the early 1970's and I asked him about this movie and he said it was very realistic of the boot camp experience in the Vietnam era. I found out first hand 30 years later that it was. But drawn out over a 3 month period. definitely beefed up for a movie, but all the underlying themes were all present. As for the big picture, my entire enlistment was dark humor and latent homosexuality jokes. I would not trade those memories for anything. Semper Fi, OORAH.
I suggest, to really grind home what war is... what men are subjected to... What devils contract we were forced to sign, in order to get the right to vote... That you continue watching: - Saving Private Ryan - Band of Brothers They're Full Metal Jacket, but without the comedy tag.
The "Hearts of Darkness" documentary about the making of Apocalyse Now is amazing. It was started by Coppola's wife and documented while filming the insanity that went into the making of Apocalyse Now. It will change how you watch and remember Apocalypse Now. Recommended.
You really don't get it... Lawrence. Broke. The. Rules! In combat, that means people die. Women pity him - men pity the others, that has to carry this useless sack.
You look like you saw a ghost when you watched R. Lee Ermey ad lib that entire scene. 😆 ...let that mole over in your brain. He ad libbed it... He made it all up on the spot. He could do that - because it wasn't all that far from what language people used around this time. Sure - some things were novel... and the sustained machinegunning of insults were impressive even back then, but nobody was even remotely offended. In fact. The word "offended" didn't exist. The only thing that really sucker punched in this movie - was the toilet scene. These days - I'm thinking it's the reverse... people get their panties in a twist over the language used... ...but seeing a white guy off himself in a bathroom would beget nothing but cheers and applause.
Being older and coping with severe PTSD, I'm lucky to be getting the help that I am. But... sadly, I know how this ends. I never get through the last scene without crying, but my life ain't no movie. The nightmares are sickening, and they drain me. It's rare for me to sleep peacefully. Every sound in the woods could be a threat. Loud noises like fireworks wreck me. There's no happy ending to my story. I accept that. You did a great video here, and I'm glad. ❤
In 1975 in Cambridge at Trinity College, a friend knew all the best Bogey lines and when someone asked " Have you got a match" he answered " Not since Bogart!".Another Classic I love Is High Sierra with Bogey and Ida Lupino, no one reviewed It yet.
This is my favorite movie. I love your reaction. I saw this when I was 20 and having the time of my life in college. I then realized my Granddad was 20 when he was in WW2 saving the whole world. What a catharsis.
Best reaction I can relate to so far. Everyone else's reactions were not like mine. This is the closest. Grossed out, traumatized, but intrigued. One of the better, "strange, threatening ideas" put to film. Similar feel to the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which I recommend as the best version.
I LOVE you! This is the best reaction video I've ever seen! Your laughter cracked me up, and your empathy and disgust were powerful. This movie was filmed in the UK because Kubrick hated to travel, but I didn't know until years later. Having been in the service, I agree, this is a messed-up film, but there's a scene that was cut where Joker did something sick to the sniper, which is why no one understands everyone making a big deal even though he just gave her a mercy shot. Very well done, Ma'am!❤
I joined in 2004 and my recruiter station had us poolies watch this after one of our bi-weekly PT session's to help prepare us for basic. The basic training portion of the movie is very accurate. My favorite movie of all time.
As someone who did special service (I was an airborne ranger of the recon platoon, platoon leader) in the 80's. Yeah, this is pretty accurate. Someone like pt Pyle wouldn't have made it in though, it's selective service and you have to apply for it but yeah, we crawled through the shit, we marched in -40 and we were chanting shit just as dumb as that. What it did do was to make you a self sufficient man and for that I will always be grateful and so will every woman I've ever been in a relationship with. I do not need a mother, I need a partner and as a partner I will share everything, every chore, every moment of happiness and I will be the one who stands tall when she needs me to no matter my own pain. I wasn't born a man, I was made one.
And now I’ve watched this video too and you’re watching of these films impress me more and more. Please do give Godfather 3 a viewing…it’s so much better than people give it credit for. It’s like they complain a movie is a 9.1 and not a 9.9. Thanks again for your great videos!
For the record, the Allies knew full well that those camps existed and they had hard evidence to prove it. But even what they knew could not prepare them for what they found.
Pyle most likely a mentally challenged individual, similar to Forrest Gump and in fact my uncle. 19 years old with a 6 year old mentality. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara had a wonderful idea, draft mentality challenged & criminals essentially to be used as cannon foder in Vietnam. My uncle received a blanket party so bad he was medically retired fully disabled. He never should have been drafted. Following simple orders was impossible for him. Years later I joined the Navy became a Corpsman & wound up serving 8 years with the Marines. As for R. Lee Ermy (GySgt Hartman) about 90% of what he said was 100% off the cuff. Drill Instructors are notoriously sharp whitted.
Just got into your videos and just got to this one. Don’t let the haters steer you away from Godfather 3 - it’s a superb film that too many people badmouth far too hard. Thanks for your excellent videos!
Great review. Arguably the best Vietnam film, you don't necessarily watch it as much as feel/experience it. Emotionally & physically. I had 2 uncles fought over there and died from Agent Orange so I have a tender spot for that. Check out the doc on the making of it ru-vid.com/group/PLGciYgiR4atEUey1J37g4Bjy7rI2wzPi3&si=v_HmO9311oKppjTN
apparently it is funny movie for that youtuber, she is laughing a lot. REALLY ? And you do know Ms RU-vidr what American boys did in that war ? And who was victim in that war ? And what was the war about ? You seem not to understand that at all.
Lime is a good way to preserve the bodies when you don't have mortuary services available. It mixes with the moisture in the air and forms a calcium carbonate shell around the body. It cuts down on the stench too. You can ask me anything about dead bodies; I'm a mortician
Ive thought about that scene where upham is in the stairs just all undone i dont know but, maybe the ss man remembered him and didnt shoot him because in the earlier scene where the squad attacked the machine gun and were about to execute the ss man Upham spoke up for him and he remembered that...
I was in the army when this movie came out shortly after the Vietnam "conflict" as it was never officially a war. I served with guys who were in Vietnam and a medic that was sent to Jonestown, which is another story. They showed me albums they had of pictures they had taken and you wouldn't believe if I told you what I saw. The period of time that Vietnam happened to was a strange period of history, Kennedy brothers and Martin Luther King Jr. assassinations, protests against the government and against Vietnam, the draft, etc... it almost appears that the government was trying to reduce the population of fighting age young men, by fighting an unofficial war against the Soviet Union in Vietnam. The Viet Cong were backed by the Soviets and we backed the opposite side, which repeated itself in numerous conflicts and countries, until the fall of the Soviet Union. Vietnam was never meant to be won and those young men were never fully supported and were treated like criminals by the American people thanks to people like Jane Fonda. It was a terrible period of American history. The training program for us when we were in BASIC and AIT during the Vietnam era was much more brutal than what happens today (I just watched your viewing of Full Metal Jacket and yes, cadence was like that as were the drill instructors, and blanket parties were a real thing "unofficially" even in the army), but it wasn't as rough as training for WWII I'm sure, but were were still using Korean war equipment, vehicles, C-Rations, etc... when I was in the army. I saw a picture of a guy wearing a VC ear necklace, which I couldn't imagine doing as I'm sure you can't, but the VC were vicious and a lot of what you see in this this movie were not far removed from reality. Those young men were heros, not because of the things they had to do to survive but because they were able to survive at all in a real life situation beyond what you could even fathom. Heck, you couldn't even get help from the VA when I got out of the army and Vietnam vets got even less and were exposed to a lot more. I just wanted you to consider this in light of your take on the movie.
