I too watched the ‘94 film for the first time, after watching the series (multiple times), and the film was a letdown. Even understanding it is short form the film seems to completely lack any emotional connection btw Lestat and Louis such that Lestat would be so crazy about Louis being his companion. I’m sorry but without facing the gay relationship head-on, the story doesn’t seem to make sense in the movie. The series is chef’s kiss. Bravo to the show writers and actors 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

That “vegetarian diet” was really messing Louis up. He was malnourished and sliding into depression. Lestat wasn’t ready to help pull him out of it at all.
The guy sitting in the chair in the beginning is a stand-in. Stand-ins are used for actors/celebs during shootings to get the lighting camera work etc prepared without taking away from the celeb's time (as Lestat's lawyer says here they only get 45 minutes of his time for the interview)

37:12 not sure if this gets addressed. But he's calling him boy because in the book Daniel is literally ONLY referred to as The Boy. He doesn't have a first name until like the third book or something. So it's like a book Easter egg... And also potentially Louis slipping into dom pimp louis mode.... Pimp Louis hated being called Boy by the (white) men of higher status in his past... So it could be a power play type thing as well. But most people within the fandom seem to just take it as a book Easter egg.
Yeah Daniel being a drug addict is a TV show change. He's not a drug addict in the book or the movie... I mean he DOES get addicted to vampire blood later on in the book series, from what book readers have told me. but in the book that they're adapting right now he's technically not a drug addict. So yeah that's a show change. But I kind of understand why they made the change. It makes things more interesting. It creates more depth to Daniel's character... It's the same reason why I like that they had him married to women and has kids. That wasn't a thing in the book or the movie either... Even though it is canon that Daniel is bisexual... Which kind of actually sets him apart from the majority of characters in the books... I mean vampires are essentially bisexual after they are turned into vampires but Daniel is one of the only humans who is bisexual from the jump and not from the dark gift, from what book readers have told me. But the wives and kids are a welcome change, for me. It just adds depth to his character. Additionally, Eric Bogosian has a past of drug abuse... So he's able to pull aspects from his own life into his acting for Daniel, in that aspect. Eric also lived through the 70s and so I'm sure he was able to be like "a journalist absolutely would be a drug addict... Everyone was doing drugs back then" or whatever. So there's a couple of reasons why they may have added drugs into the mix... The show in the future might dabble in the blood addiction storyline. And him already being a drug addict would mean that it would be significantly easier for him to fall into a blood addiction, fast. 🤷♀️ So who knows! it could have been a bunch of different reasons... Maybe just because Eric has his past and so he had some input into what Daniel's backstory would look like... Or it's potentially foreshadowing for a future plot line in the upcoming seasons. We will have to wait and see what season 3 and beyond bring us.
I can definitely see becoming addicted to vampire blood for someone like Daniel. Maybe, they'll show that in a future backstory btwn him and Armand? That would be awesome. Eric Bogosian definitely has alot from his long life to pull from and it shows.
26:16 yeah, they shot this episode first because it was a bottle episode with a really relatively simple set... Because they needed to give Delainey some extra time to prep. Because she was officially casted like a week before shooting started or something stupid like that... She pretty much had ZERO prep time. So they decided to help her out and shoot an episode for a week to give her extra time. The time crunch is one of the reasons why she basically is just putting on a generic southern accent... Doesn't sound super New Orleans, like Louis does... Because she was just using a nore generic southern accent that she already had under her belt, from what it looks like. I do prefer her accent work to Bailey's accent work but I wish that she had more time to perfect a more New Orleans sounding accent. Accent work is extremely difficult and I'm sure she did the best she could with the time that she had. But yeah, this episode was an absolutely wild episode for them to start their filming off with... But it was done for a reason. Even if it was pretty much throwing their actors into the deep end... Thankfully, ALL of the actors in this bottle episode are theater trained actors (additionally they're all British theater actors... And the British theater scene always seems to turn out some mind-blowingly amazing actors. Ben Daniels who plays Santiago is ALSO a British theater actor.) And the way that this episode was shot was VERY theater-esque with a lot of long shots and movement in the scenes. So that probably was a little bit easier for this group of actors.... But yeah,... This is definitely something that most TV shows don't do when filming. I'm pretty sure they decided to do it and pulled it off as AMAZINGLY as they did because of the high caliber of actors that they are lucky enough to have on this show.
I think the contest in which Lestat saved Louis is why Louis never thought Lestat is who saved him. Lestat just killed their daughter and came to the trial to seemingly seek justice. So in that contest, it also makes sense why louis didn’t connect the dots. Also Armand is playing victim and innocent so it all came together to paint a very different picture to the man who is facing death and being openly betrayed by Lesta. I also think the obvious tension in Armand and louis’s relationship is Louis’s subconscious telling him the truth he didn’t want to see
The guy needs the show to do its work in regards to Daniel being turned that will be explained later, they have already laid the foundation to that in episode 8. Also, there’s more to Claudia’s death than what we’ve seen, we will see more of that in season 3 from Lestat’s pov, again, he’s forgetting that Louis memories were being messed up by Armand so some of the things we saw at the trial went unexplained like Lestat swaying back and forth and looking like he was in a trance moments before Claudia was killed. Last but not least, he’s gonna have to get used to Lestat and Louis being together or else he aint gonna enjoy the show in the future.

In the book, The Vampire Lestat has chapters about Akasha's origin and how he drank from her. Read The Vampire Lestat. A lot of brilliant chapters of him and also Marius as well.
26:49 I mean the entirety of season 1 Louis talks about Claudia in the past tense. Every single time... So Daniel probably assumes she's dead just like I think the TV audience is meant to assume so. Additionally, we have to assume that Louis was talking about Claudia in the same way back in the 70s as well... So Daniel has known or assumed that Claudia is dead for decades now. And since Louis hasn't changed the word tenses from the 70s till now. Daniel probably just assumes that she is indeed dead... And he knows that Claudia is a touchy subject with Louis... When he has TRIED to pry a little bit more into her life details... Louid has triggered his Parkinson's symptoms to worsen.... So I understand why he's being a little bit delicate now and not just outright bluntly asking him if Claudia is dead. Also it works for a TV show script reason...because TV shows WANT to show not tell and so if they have Daniel just bluntly ask that question to Louis and Louis gives an answer right away like you would when answering an interview question... it would be them telling us something and not showing us what happened.... "Let the tale seduce you" as Louis told Daniel in season 1... Louie has asked Daniel to let Louis tell his story from beginning to finish with supposedly minimal clarifying questions. And so I think Daniel is respecting that and tamping down a little bit on his investigative journalistic instincts to poke and pry because he has had negative reactions when he has done so. He figures that Louis will say Claudia is dead when Claudia dies chronologically in the story. I don't know... I don't think that it's necessarily an out of character thing for Daniel to be doing... But I do also understand why you think Daniel would be super duper blunt... He *can* be VERY blunt but the show has also given/shown us enough reasons for why Daniel ISN'T being super blunt, IMO.
The Lestat thing: He went into a depression after the Claudia situation. He is still rich, he just hasnt lived above his means because of grief. The names he gives are alias' that he gives. Sebastian is one of the names he went by and he is a real person from many many years ago that was gay. I forget what he did for a living... I think he was either an artist or play write.... Maybe composer. Armand's only fledgling is Daniel (cannonically)...
Okay! So... Here is the vampire lore.... Akasha is the first vampire from 6000 yrs ago. Just like any other ancestor, when she made her first fledgling, that one went and made another.... Then that one made one... And so on. So her blood is diluted. Lestat, met Marius.. Armand's maker. Marius protects Akasha and her husband (Those who must be kept).. lestat mentions them in season 1, during the 7th episode when they were putting up the Christmas tree. During the time that Lestat was with Marius, Akasha allowed him to drink from her.... So... Even though all vampires are connected to her, the blood is diluted. So they dont all have the same powers. Powers are different for everyone. Armand has an ancient's (Marius) blood... So he can fly.... Lestat has an ancient's blood (Magnus AND Akasha) .. so he can fly. We dont know who Santiago's maker is, but whoever he is had to be an ancient..... That is why no one else can fly, because their blood isnt powerful. "The Dark Gift is different for each of us." In the books it's always pointed out how beautiful vampires are and how people are chosen for their beauty and how the dark gift will make a vampire beautiful. They certainly chose gorgeous and talented actors to fit the bill. The acting in this episode was flawless. Akasha is the first vampire. She's known as the queen of the damned. She's a very interesting character and I think we'll get her in S3. I'm so excited we're getting a S3 because Lestat will be front and center.
51:21 the woman he was sleeping with is referenced as "his student" because he's teaching her English... He was just a reporter for a newspaper. Not an actual professor. He made a snide remark by saying her English was as broken as it was because he was "too in love with her to teach her properly" how to speak English, like he can. He also does seem to know a decent amount of her native language so yeah there doesn't seem to be a significant amount of language barrier even with them both not being fluent in each other's languages, i suppose. It's not a very important detail but yeah... I figured I would clarify the dude was NOT a creepy professor... He was just calling the woman that he was in love with and therefore he was teaching her English... his "student".
23:01 yeah lestat said that drinking a dead person's blood would KILL a vampire... But Lestat was that was wrong. In reality, a vampire drinking a dead person's blood just kind of makes them really sick. It doesn't kill them. So like yeah he told them something that he THOUGHT was true... But the show has proved that he was incorrect. Because the Revenant vampire was drinking people who were already dead... And it was still standing. I mean I guess you can't really say how "alive" the Revenant vampire was bc it was essentially this universe's version of a zombie but, you know, it was still standing. And this information is ALSO all in the books. So yeah, Lestat was kind of fear-mongering to Louis about that. In the book and in the show. But yeah, y'all are correct that Louis is a hypocrite. Absolutely. Very much so. I mean you could also argue that they are kind of under like survival conditions traveling through Europe... Humans that they are able to eat Like random soldiers and stuff... Humans are going to satisfy him for a significantly LONGER time than ANY animal that they come across... In the survival situations, sometimes you have to do what will make you survive the longest. And so yeah Louis' definitely going against his preset morals of not wanting to kill people but also he's in a situation where he NEEDS to survive long enough to be able to find other vampires. I don't think he can afford to be weakened by only drinking animal blood which we were shown in season 1 absolutely weakens him in multiple different aspects of his life.
