I'm here to promote my music. I am releasing my 3rd full length album on Oct.31, 2023. The album is called "THE ROCK" and it really does ROCK ! If you are a fan of rock music and classic rock from the 70's then this new album is for you. I am a Canadian Independent musician. I write all my lyrics, play all the instruments you here on every track and I also record/mix and master my own songs. Please support independent music makers.
$35 for an adapter in 198X. What a ripoff lol. That's like $80 in todays worthless plastic money. I was around 16 in 1985 and wished I could have afforded one of those. What i loved about analog gear was the fact that generally everything WORKED, and didn't need 40 updates as soon as you plugged it in, and then isn't compatible with your OS, and then needs to have a hack from previous firmware to work, and then only works up to 85% of capability because of said hack, without which you would have an expensive paperweight.
Crazy how time flies and money gets worth less and less. It was a very expensive device back then. I started recording on a Fostex 250 , 4 track recorded I bought used for $850.00. I also still have my KORG DIGITAL DRUMS AND DIGITAL PERCUSSION DEVISES AS WELL.
I would have used the brass shield again. It blocks interference hum. That is what I have been told. It might reduce that buzz. Don't throw those old pots out. They add to the value of the antique. Had you already tried oxy switch cleaner and compressed air to quiet them down?
I know it's an old post, but here goes. It's sounds very nice. Modern electronics tend to be closer in spec as manufacturers got better at holding tolerances. I do hope you reinstall the Ferriday cage. As the previous commenter 👆 said, it does knock out some stray electronic interference. That harness is probably common ground by today's standard, but in the day, those brass and aluminum plates were used to central ground the harness and connect the harness to the bridge ground. If you get bored, it is definitely worth the time and effort to reinstall, but solder the bridge ground to it. It will amaze you how clean they can get. I also made a thin brass plate for the cavity cover of my 61 SG and soldered in a 3in ground connecting both to complete the circuit. If you're going to do more maintenance, can I suggest a fine electronics solder station ? As much as we all love those old Weller handhelds, they can easily overheat the internal sweeper plates and cause premature breakdown of the contacts at the most inopportune times. You have some pretty good tunes on your channel. I hope to check back in periodically to hear some new ones. I, too, have a soft spot in my heart for the Norlan era L5 and L6's. I had a beautiful cherry 1963 Gibson 335 back in 1985, but during a move, it got crushed between some heavy furniture. Since I was a teenager at the time and too broke to replace it, I found an L6-S Deluxe at Bizarre Guitar in Mesa Arizona and plunked down the princely sum of $200 on a sunburst version. I lucked out, and they had an ES-330T single P90 in Cherry for $250. I borrowed $20 from my dad to put it on layaway and worked my butt off all summer to get it out of jail.🤣 I have bought many Gibsons since but my trusty old L6 is always within reach. It's just a beautiful economic design of a workhorse guitar that never fails. I got into Fenders many years ago but soon figured out the L6 was supplying the Tele "quack" the whole time. It's my desert island guitar. Sorry for the long post. It's been a while since I've run across someone else who's owned one for as long as I have. So, which one is your #1 ? The L6 or the SG ?🤔
Renting, thanks for the comments. Okay, where to start... I'm so sorry your guitar got kill by furniture during a move, thats a terrible situation. If you were as poor as I was during my teens than I know how much that hurts. I did not reinstall the brass grounding plate but you make a good point about noise so maybe, if I get bored, I'll reinstall. I don't play live since I have no band and its all just me so noise hasn't been an issue, so far. My L6-S sounds great, I can make it sound like a single coil with a few turns of the selector and an adjustment on the centre pot, midrange. So which is my favorite, hmmm, I would say the SG, it just heels so familiar and I know it like the back of my hand even though I've had the L6-S longer. I have an Ibanez single coil for the country twang sound but I can never get it to sound bluesy.. Anyway, I ramble on. Thanks for listening to my music, All of my songs were written by me and all of the music was played by me and all of the vocals, good and bad , were sung by me. Its getting so hard to hear real music any more, music with a few flaws and quirks. So I am what I am, a real dude making music. Have a great day and keep in touch, I'm not done yet.
@stevepopemusic1658 👍 I just mentioned reinstalling the plate because I played a couple of places with tons of neon and well, old guitar and a tube amp pick up that frequency like setting a cell phone on an OD pedal.🤣 Learned that the hard way. Keep on turning out the tunes, I'm at a (health and age) where I sit by myself and " do all the parts " into an old analog setup I cobbled together in the early 90s.
It was always a great adventure to try out guitars and amps, even go into the special acoustic guitar room and play one of those before we got asked to leave.
Well to update you, I got a Rockman soloist for 169.99, and it is the greatest amp I own, and ever will to be honest 😭 you get so much in one small box it’s so good
If Tom ever got back into building effects he'd become rich & famo... uhhh... nevermind. Seriously though, I'd like to see him working some projects with a company like Strymon.
Wow you are right. He could even take on a part time consulting role and make a huge difference for Strymon. Anyone else who does analog stuff could snatch him up too
your playing and song selection to show many different demonstrations of useable album tones were excellent, here comes the but!!!!! why didnt you do even one sound sample of the rockman being used as a preamp for a guitar amplifier???? tom scholz used it as a preamp live and in the studio frequently.
I know, there's alot i could have done.. I think it was designed as a replacement for an amp so everybody could record or play anywhere, even on the go with batteries. I've never put batteries in mine. Thanks for the comments, I really do appreciated them.
@@stevepopemusic1658 I grew up in the 60's and in the later 70's thru the 90's played a lot. Couldn't afford the unit but did use the power soaks which was sort of stupid but we wanted use our 100 wayy marshalls which were obviously way to loud for the clubs. We were still to loud with the power soaks because we were young and stupid. I finally wised up and bought a deluxe reverb. Used for everything from old country to judas Priest and it worked just fine with very few pedals. Boss CE-2 and big box rat peddle, little bit of verb and clean boost is all I ever used. Verb of course with a bit of delay. The chorus did just fine I still have those pedals. Best chirus ever made in a stomp box imo.
@@monmixer on my latest album "THE ROCK" i used my mid 70's Garnet mini-bass amp I think 35 watts into a single 12" emenance speaker. The only effect I used was my 1979 boss ds-1 pedal. I really like the sounds, it sounds so 1970's perfect.
Wow I really appreciate the comments. I just released a new album called THE ROCK, if you like my playing here, you're going to love THE ROCK. Much appreciated, thanks.
Hahaha, that is so funny, I would have got it. He still looks the same. Xanadu has got to be in my top 5 Rush songs. I remember trying so hard to learn that song from my Farwell to Kings album, last song side 1. Needle up, needle down, repeat about a million times.
I still have one that I use for tracking that bright beautiful chorus. The AC adapter is an absolute must for me though otherwise it's 8 double A's and then you have to figure out how to get the battery cover off without breaking things. The other thing is they don't have the traditional plus or negative markings for putting in the batteries, so it can be confusing the first time around.
I've never put batteries in mine, I had no idea there were no + or - thats wierd. I bought the adapter when I bought the Rockman. Using it for quick tracking is a great idea, quick and easy. Thanks, I appreciate the comments.
I have an original IIB that I refurbished with new caps and an internal power supply. Sounds awesome and so much fun. Great video. Lot's of great memories.
Thank you, I appreciate the comments. I just released a new album this week called "THE ROCK", I forgot to use my rockmam on it. Go check it out, you'll love it.
I know, it plays great, sounds great feels great. I used it on my new album "THE ROCK". Every guitar on the right side is this L6-S. Check it out, it sounds complimentary to my SG on the left.
I had several of these heads from the 90s. I loved the sound of these amps with my Gibsons. One of my Valvestate 100 heads kept blowing fuses. I would bring it to the local shop for repair then pick it up once it was “ready”. I’d bring it home plug it in, I would get sound out of it for maybe a minute or so and boom it would blow another fuse. I did this 3 times before the repair shop became frustrated and refused to take it in for further repair. At the time I could purchase an identical replacement head for around $150 or so. In hindsight I’d have collected these Marshall Valvestate 100 amplifier heads when I’d find a good deal on one. At one time you could find them everywhere and I thought they sounded better than any other amp at that price, especially if pairing them with a Marshall 1960 series cabinet.
I should really use mine more. I used to play in a band and this was my workhorse, practices and gigs. The only issue I ever had was the tube and some scratchy pots. Keep on playin my friend !
Great demo! I still have my "IIB" (precursor to the X100) from 1983. Recently sent it to B5 Amplification for re-capping and dedicated power supply. Subbed! (BTW, there is no T in "Scholz") Good stuff!
@@stevepopemusic1658 oh, I know I'll dig it, I have the Sustainor and Distortion Generator half racks - had the Chorus Delay it but seems to have disappeared 😕. Really grabbing it for that sweet chorus! I miss it!!
The clean sound is different than the X100 (sort of a CLN1 and CLN2 blend) - it's nice though. Also, the clipping in the Soloist are soft clipping diodes in the distortion setting compared to the X100 which are hard clipping LEDs.
Actually def lep used the rockman x100 and tom scholtz designed the rockman x100 so the average guitar player could get the boston sound. The soloist sounds good and cool but is not the full boston sound as you imply, but it's close, i bought a rockman x100 in 1990 for about 375.00 or a little more, the adaptor was also sold separately and cost about almost 40 dollars, wish i still had mine cause you can sell them for around 600 dollars today if they are in really good shape
It's Tom Scholz (no T) and Phil Colleen used the Soloist on Def Leppard Adrenalize noted here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6pli9XTPHR8.html at around 2:18 or so.
@@dcdno_one2393 I think Phil Collen was actually referring to the Rockman Ultralight. I believe it's the best overall of the headphone amps. It's the only version that allows you to turn the effects off whilet still keeping Clean 2 (the brighter, fuller one), like he mentioned. The soloist only has Clean 1. I just managed to snag one that was fully refurbished somehow cheaper than most X100s, despite it being much rarer. People are so focused on the X100 that they ignore the other versions.
Thanks for the demo. I didn't know it had the distortion sound of the rhythm parts , only assumed it was just the solo sound. Not a bad package. This is the only demo of the Soloist on YT. And none of the Rockman Metal Ace.
