This reminds me of my great grandpa sure i never seen him in my live, but its dark. i know what he looks like from an old picture from that time. its violent, but.. he was shot 52 times and died in WWI. lost his legs, had got his arm shot off, most violently his head, he still had it. but it was horrible to think about, he was shot 24 times if i'm correct times in his face. his face, his beautiful face i would love to see, was gone. his eyes, nose and mouth all where shot off. he was killed. ending, with one sharp long knife going straight through his head.
The way it was explained to me was the armistice was just a cease fire not the end of war. Thats why many soldiers still died that day. There was at the time no guaranty that the war would end. I read that the American who stormed the machine gun was recently demoted from Sargent to private. His hopes were that he would receive his former rank. I believe they said that he did posthumously.
I heard of this story. People thought he was a German spy and he was demoted because of it. After the charge that took his life, he was promoted back to sergeant and a memorial was made for him
@@raz0rquack That isn't the reason at all. The reason is that it takes time for the communication to be shared to all parties, so a time must be set so that one side does not believe the war is over while the other side doesn't know and continues to fight. Remember, these men were recieving messages by post, they did not have cellphones.
IDU why everyone disobeyed the deadline - the Germans, the Americans, the French everyone. Sad. Inhumanity at its worst. Why couldn't they make friends and have soup together? Or is it's just my stupid, poor soul. Never mind. May be I am just a simple man. 🥲. 2500 soldiers died in the final moments of the war? Why God why? Is human life so cheap? What about those parents - mothers and fathers who waited for their sons and daughters knowing they were safe and would be back home after the war - only to understand they died in those last moments?
The scene where the German gets on top of his machine gun, position and bowes is actually based off of a real event that happened when the armistice was signed.
