this was nothing new to me but still i found this video to be entertaining and educating! 😊 I like to think that I'll never be too experienced as an artist to sometimes go back to basics ❤
Hello! I am new to watercolors and have really been enjoying watching your videos! I have a quick question for you...I've watched quite a few videos on here from different artists, and noticed that almost all of them use either Windsor &Newton or David Smith (I think those are the names) paints. I've been looking around online and boy, all the professional sets are REALLY expensive. I am practically desperate to get my paintings to start looking better, but I just can't afford $70 + for a new set of paints. I did find this one tho, and was wondering if you think it would work well for someone like me? www.amazon.com/dp/B000PD3LYY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_K4ZZ2TC14ZCZJ0DGYEB5?psc=1 Thank you! Brenda
Winsor and Newton and Daniel Smith are the brands. As for your link to the Cotman tube set, it depends on what you're currently using for paints, how advanced your painting is, what other tools you're using, and what you're hoping to achieve by buying new paints. New paints won't make your art any better, unless you mean specific techniques you're struggling to achieve with your current paints, but upgrading your paper is usually the better option in that case. Having said that, Cotman paints are student level paints with a fairly low pigment load that are no better than crafter paints. They're fine for beginners who don't want to invest a lot of money into something they aren't sure they'll enjoy, but there are far better options out there. If you want to stay in that price range than I would recommend you look into Royal Talens Van Gogh paints instead, which are much better quality and have a higher pigment load. You'll be far less limited with those than Cotman paints. A good artist can make beautiful art with almost any brand though, so there's no need at all to spend a fortune on professional paints if you're not a professional artist.
I recently bought Arches and was surprised that it was so bumpy. I’d been using cheaper brands as a beginner and thought I’d step it up. I’m going to use the Arches up but I’m won’t buy it again. I have the Princeton Heritages Brushes and I love them too!
Love your work! I have a question that I haven’t heard anyone address on instructional videos on RU-vid. When a person is interested in learning to watercolor and they have all the supplies needed, exactly where should they start? I see a lot of videos on how to paint certain beginner projects but I’m unsure if starting a project is the first place to start learning.
You are exactly who I needed to hear today, God bless you. I’m a beginner and I really like your style, thank you! I’ve been having a bad week, and you just made it better 💜
confused! your very first stroke leaves no dark spot where the stem ends and the leaf begins when you begin pushing down on the brush. I can't seem to do that. Also! the second stroke begins slightly over the first stroke and leaves a nice darker spot there. It's as if your first stroke has already dried. How in the world is that happening?
This might have to do with your paper, or how much water you have on your brush! Puddling usually occurs when there's an excess of water OR if the paper isn't absorbing the water (happens with hot pressed paper).
Brand new to watercolors and have been looking for videos on how to begin. Your video has been fantastic! I hadn't thought of leaving the paints on the palette to dry and I have wasted so much paint not doing this. Looking forward to watching more of your videos (And, your splurge on that insanely beautiful palette- so well worth it! )Thank you!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video. :) I have a Skillshare class on layering to make loose little pine trees - but not an in depth one about detailed fir trees. Feel free to email me and I can send some recommendations! :) hello@emeraldandivystudios.com
In case my last post shows up at some point sorry for the repeat lol. This was the first video of yours I've seen and enjoyed it, thanks. I wanted to comment that I have Daniel Smith watercolor sticks which I purchased because they were cheaper than most of the tube versions; I paid around $9 each and I got some quins, primatek, and the buff titanium. I want cascade green, but instead purchased serpentine green in the stick version which granulates into two colors just beautifully. I can cut about 4 half pans from one stick, and they fit snuggly into the pan like buns popping out of a pan lol. They rewet with no issue and a little goes a long way. Love the ceramic pallet! I'm going to go see the other content on your channel. Your green wall looks like your floral paintings are in a field and makes them pop 😁
