For the hammock you should put your feet on one side and your head on the other side. Left to right. This will allow you to sleep flat. If you stay centered on the hammock your but will dip low and you will sleep in an awkward V
Doubling up will definitely add warmth but will reduce breathability and drying time. I touched on it with the grid fleeced but you can throw them over ninja tops and use them like lightweight fleece midlayer.
That’s the best part about surplus. Jackets that would cost $500+ new or on the commercial market are way cheaper surplused. I got my level 6 for just under $200 a few years back and it’s just as good as the stuff off the rack
Arent most soft shells "windproof" nowadays tho? Wouldnt most just use base layer plus a soft shell (Level 5)?? Genuinely curious, cause im struggling to understand what my system truly needs even woth testing.
A better word for Level 4 is a “minimum shell”. It’s more of a supplemental layer to augment/enhance your system. Whereas the Level 5 is more of a dedicated outer layer for an alpine environment. I like to think of it as: no snow = level 4. Snow = level 5.
can you talk a bit more on the thread type and sewing machine model? I ran into issues trying to use a basic, non-heavy duty sewing machine not being able to go through the multiple layers. Advice appreciated.
It definitely improved upon the PCU block 0 and 1 in a lot of ways. I’d say it’s a huge win for big army that they didn’t get something inferior just to cut costs.
Been wearing Neos Navigator over boots for a couple winters now, best thing ever. Threw away other boots Sorels etc….all you need to do is step into them with your tennis shoes and you’re set for a warm dry all day in snow they’re the best things ever.
@KitCreep You could also velcro the chest pockets on the outside so you can access the same side but without angled pockets. This allows access with chest rig in place. Provided you dont have a large cumberbun on your rig.
looks like this way is not fit for country where I live in... But I got a hint. thankyou! (Humit over 60%, 37C-40C(98.6-104F), Sometimes fall Typhoon class hard rain...
Ideal for me has been tarp, ruck hip belt as pillow, full body bug net thrown over ruck and feet to create a sort of bug net lean to/ pyramid. Works pretty well for range days/ live fire.
Could you do a how-to video on the raid mod bdu to help those who want to do it on their own? I would like to know if you bartack the pockets once you put them back on.
Hey, I used to wok at a paintball site and learnt to polish the inside of lenses with Johnson's baby shampoo. Applied correctly it would work wonders to reduce fogging. Using a microfiber cloth polish it on making sure it gets nice and foamy, leave for 5 minutes, and then polish clear and streak free. I've used it Airsofting, paintballing, and on a motorcycle helmet. It needs reapplying the more you breathe into it of course. I'd reapply it few times a day paintballing but like once a week to once a month on my motorcycle helmet. Once the moisture defeats the shampoo the moisture tends to bead and run rather than fog or mist which isn't great but still easier to see through. I don't know if any old shampoo would work. I don't know if any special lense treatment will react negatively with it but I've used it on my prescription glasses aswell as PPE lenses without any problems. Hope this can help.
One more observation from a former Nordic Ski PAtrollerand US Army ROTC Cadet winter survival instructor. I have tested two good brands of DWR treated down garments and loose DWR treated down from a 3rd supplier. ->ALL of these have been excellent at passing body moisture to the outer layer shell in all cases except my -30 F. down expedition parka, which in temperatures below -10 F. needs no shell layer.. ->My -20 F. down winter bag has DWR teated down but still needs a light polyester "flannel" cover to hold the frozen body moisture. ->This light cover holds about 90% of the night's perspiration and when removed the frost can be shaken off as the fabric does not absorb the moisture.
Jeff gurwitch or the RU-vid channel modern tactical shooting mentions in on his videos about gear used in the early 2000’s that even pre 9/11 5th group was getting modified dcu blouses with a raid mod issued to them
Love Jeff’s channel. He stuck with his raid mod bdus while other guys were getting the new crye uniforms. I think he saw the coolest evolution of kit in history.
