When I started watercolor painting, I quickly felt out of place with my tight realistic style. And when I got an opportunity to teach locally later, I discovered how snobby the art world can sometimes be! I'm just an ordinary self-taught mom of four after all.
Hello, fellow creative, and welcome, I'm Françoise! I believe that if art is going to be for fun, then, rules should be broken (anytime you wish!). That's also why besides watercolors, I love to uncover underrated mediums' potential on this channel, like watercolor pencils, Inktense products...

Thank you for sharing your skills and tips. So appreciated by so many of us. Can i ask if you soak yr paper first and then place on yr board with tape? Or do you prefer to wash over the whole sheet with a big brush? 💚🏴
Salut Françoise! J'espère que vous allez bien! You are the queen of techniques! Thank you for your channel, I always learn something new from you!! Ps. I wanna buy watercolor pencils abut I am so afraid cause I don't understand how they work. Would you consider doing a similar demo with the pencils, incorporating the techniques to the actual painting process? You explain everything so nicely!
I just purchased the 36 set and they are amazing! They work 100% better on wood. They don’t bleed like normal watercolors do on wood. I only create art on wood.
I have these Inktense blocks, but I am not successful in painting with them. I found them the most useful for wet value underpainting for soft pastels. When I have them dried, I can build up as many pastel layers as usual :)
I think that’s a great subject for a YT video, same painting, different colour choices, and the outcome(s). Could be very valuable to increase a beginner’s confidence how a limited, split primary or other such reduced choice palette impacts their artwork. Look forward to watching it!
Mine is a bit shiny at an angle but it's discrete overall. There are matte types of white gouache and it will clearly say on the label, maybe try something like this?
Thank you so much for this video. I finally know how to use them and what they can do. I would be very happy to see more videos about these watercolor markers. Do you have something planned in the near future? 🤩
I love your technique for making the gouache look like part of the painting instead of sitting on top that I learned in your basics course. Makes a difference.
Ohhhh I love the Middle-Earth vibe :))) I have to admit, when I tried watercolors for the first time, I planned to make art inspired by Middle-Earth. A few years have passed, and I have never painted a scene. I am still scared of making bad art, because Tolkien's world is so precious to me... My favorite character from the books are: Glorfindel, Aragorn, and the Nazguls (so scary!), and from the movies: Aragorn, Eowyn, Eomer, Legolas, Gandalf. Thank you for sharing your art process and many informative advices of using watercolor pencils :)
I just watched my first video from you and I love your way of teaching. Not too fast or too slow! Love the tip about shape, and the white pencil at the end.
It’s always an appreciated reminder to think of the dimensions of the object while painting because it’s easy to forget this when you are pianting and focused on shapes! The reminder to still keep this in mind while activating the pencil is great advice… It’s truly walking a tightrope to paint… I also found the advice to wet the surrounding area first before activating the watercolor pencil new and very useful! I also love how you prewet the white pencil for highlights. Thankyou!❤
Hi , thanks for the very informative , and interesting video, it's been a big help to me. I've recently returned to watercolours after probably 30 yrs, so I'm learning all over again, lol. And to answer your question on using old paint, I can say my W &N cottman pans look perfect, and are painting just as good as I remember them. Some of my pans need a top up, so I'll be using tube paint after watching this video. Many thanks, stay safe, best wishe's, Stuart Uk.
First time I’ve seen your videos. Was always a bit disappointed with watercolour pencils but you have inspired me to have another go with them Will be watching more
You’ve made an obscure photograph so interesting. What did you use for the resist in the beginning and how did you remove it when you wanted to paint the island?
Oohh… when where are/ were you on Vancouver Island, Francoise? Could possibly have arranged a sketch-meet - love your style - hope you have fabulously fun and creative travels -:) - peter
@@paintingandchocolate - Whoa... 15 years ago... I'm only here for 1 1/2 years now - it is a fine place, for sure - hope , wherever you may be now, you are surrounded by good-energy nature, too :-)
@@paintingandchocolate Mainly a sort of grainyness to the pigment once I've activated it on the paper. I find it slightly fixed by using a stiffer brush, but then that lacks some flow when pushing the pigment around. Not sure if I'm laying down too much or too little pigment. But your tip about layers makes me think I may be giving up too early and just need to keep working on it. I do love those watersoluble graphite pencils though.
I dont know why I've never thought to hold a clean wet brush to smooth the lines while I'm painting. My rinse water becomes mud within minutes. Because I'm rinsing away pigment that I'm still working with just to clean/smooth/reload with same pigment. Saves hundreds of trips to the sink for fresh water, and conserves my paint too❤
Toning with white is dicey as it can take weeks for the white to stop migrating through your other colors. And it generally looks chalky. Better to lift and scrape if you can get away with it.
Cute! He turned out really nice! Looks like he is throwing him a tantrum, before bopping off of where he sits to go steal some unsuspecting boatman's fish! Maybe either a leopard seal, an octopus, a chameleon, or, even duck-billed platypus next would definitely be pretty cool if you're looking for suggestions, that is! LmMFaO!!! ;) :P :o)
