This channel is about all things Peak District, the history, scenery, wildlife and all shared through hiking in the area. I am a 55 year old slightly overweight biker and engineer who lives in the Dark Peak. I am keen on solo hiking, camping, motorcycles and anything to do with the outdoors. Primarily based in the Peak District National Park but also further afield. In this channel I intend to upload videos of the walks I do, hiking documentaries and a link to the GPX download of the route. I will also rant, ramble and philosophise about life in general. So I apologise in advance for any F bombs ( not really I am what I am).I also hope to focus on the history, natural history, flora and fauna as these seem to be lacking in a lot of the hiking videos today, which seem to focus on how far and how fast the walk is done plus endless gear reviews. That's it for now I hope to start uploading videos very soon ( it will be a very big learner curve so be patient).
Looks like a top camp, mate. You mentioned Ollerbrook Clough; it's a far easier route up, brings you up to the Nab from the other side, avoiding those nasty switch-backs. From the Nab it carries on up to Ringing Roger along the same path, really pretty route too!
Great video, Stu. Having a long overdue catch up on your channel. Would it be fair to deduce that the cement works opening at Hope in 1920's were a big contributing factor to seeing the demise of these slate quarries?
Yes definitely, as slate was used a lot for flooring etc and cement replaced it as easier and cheaper. It's a shame as you can't beat a good old slate floor.
Your reaction to the sheer number of grockles and their cairn building escapades was priceless, I didn't think it was possible to hear so many expletives in a single tyrade! 🤣 Great video and so much to see on this route, well done. All these miles you're doing must be doing your health the world of good, I'm sure you appreciate how blessed you are to have all this on your doorstep. That view from the top of Lord's seat, just incredible.
Thanks mate, they were the only words I could use 🤣🤣🤣 it's amazing what's around you when you walk through the landscape. I think too many people obsess with speed and distance these days. I love researching the maps and place names always hold a story behind them. I am very lucky indeed. Also like your vids too mate as they are a refreshing change from the gear reviews and tedious stuff that's out there. Keep up the good work.
@@thepeakdistrictviking I've been keeping an eye on the weather. I'm not bothered about getting wet it's just that it's a long way to go for zero views.
I saw this very same litter a couple of months back and my reaction was identical. Do you know what this is a vent for? Some eerie sounds coming from deep within, which your mic picked up.
@@thepeakdistrictviking Reverting Peak Cavern back to it's original name 'The Devil's Arse' caused many schools to cancel trips, apparently. Thanks for the info. I was wild camping in the woods above those caves a couple of months back, but unfortunately we were chased away by a herd of very angry cows. The things you get up to when you're over 50.
@ohdearism ridiculous that they're cancelling the school trips!! Wtf!!! Cows can be bloody dangerous at times especially if they have calves. I think us over 50s are doing all the mad stuff now before we are unable to 🤣🤣🤣
@@thepeakdistrictviking Yeah, the Peak Cavern's new owners kinda shot themselves in the foot. I think that's why they have concerts and gigs in there now to make up for reduced/lost revenue. It was a rainy night and they came up into the woods to shelter, but a couple of cows weren't too happy with us being there. Jumping over 6ft walls with all your gear at 1am in the mist and rain - priceless. You gotta laugh!
13:35 Once I had a sheep in front of me like this; someone then walked onto the track from the field on one side and blocked it. I watched the sheep run back past me, for just a few seconds; when turned back round, the guy wasn't anywhere to be seen; It felt quite spooky!
Hi Stu. Wonderful video as always mate. A cracking route that and as ever so interesting. Mam Tor, looks the stuff of nightmares, certainly not the place to get outdoor solitude! 🤣 On a seperate note, do you find that you plot a route in to OS maps, and when you do the walk the distance is quite a bit further than what OS said. I had a belting walk yesterday mate. All the best, enjoy the rest of the weekend. 😀🥾⛰
Sometimes I get a difference either when I take a wrong turn or if there's a lot of ascent and descent I don't think they always capture thay effectively. It's not normally a huge difference in the latter case. On this walk in a couple of places the paths on the map did not reflect reality so had a couple of diversions as well as turn around 🤣🤣🤣 95% of the time it's accurate though. Cheers for watching mate.
@@thepeakdistrictviking I think it’s a lot to do with it not taking ascent in to account. I always end up walking between a mile or a mile and a half longer than what OS maps says.
Great walk there. Love the history that you find out about places too. It really adds to the video, plus history is a favourite topic of mine!😊 Thanks for sharing. ❤xx
Glad you liked it. I do like doing the research. I think sometimes we walk through a landscape and don't really see everything that's there. A lot get focused on distance and time as opposed to enjoying what's around them. Thanks for watching as always 😊
Brill video Stu, I love how much information you pack in! The sound was a bit quiet at times, nothing that turning up the volume wouldnt fix though. Love it, keep em coming!
Very interesting! I did a walk to the east trig from the main south face path where it meets the Golden Clough path. It wasn't that obvious and I navigated mainly as I could see the trig in the distance. Your path looked much better, where does it leave the main path?
I was a scout and leader in the 82nd Derby (1st Alvaston) scout troop. I'm sure we did a hike across Kinder from the Snake Inn at night with the Viking VSU. Good times!!! Cheers for watching 😊
Enjoyed this one mate, thanks for taking us along for the ride. You certainly picked an excellent spot, beautiful views with a cracking sunset and sunrise. Midges ruin summer camps. I had to do a dry stone wall repair last summer, and I got devoured. No escape until I'd finished the wall!
Hi Stu, the way you went up its the easier route to get up and probably more picturesque than going for the scramble - I prefer Woolpacks or the other way along the ridge toward Druids Stone as a camp spot- were you expecting a storm guying it out like that lol - if you still want to go out sometime let me know I am doing a long distance path next week but maybe sometime in September if free, could do a camp out - cheers Andy
Thanks mate, defiantly interested in doing a camp, just got to wait for some dates for my fiancees operation but September or early October should be fine. Good luck on your walk and I'll be in touch
