A road trip on Route 66 at age 66. The journey from concept to road trip end with many steps in between. A wild idea that is becoming a reality. Finding and buying the car, prepping the car for the journey, hauling the car to Chicago, then the drive from Chicago to Santa Monica while savoring the sights in between. There's a lot of work going into finding the car. Once purchased, going through the car to ensure it's ready for a cross-country road trip. Followed by the trip itself. Sights and sounds along the way, interesting tourist attractions, restaurants, hotels, natural wonders. And of course the Mother Road itself, stretching across America. I hope you'll enjoy the trip!
I had the pleasure of travelling R66 back in 2018 with a cousin of mine who purchaced a Mustang in Chicago. We drove across in one month after visiting off R66 places and thoroughly enjoyed it. The car was shipped back to New Zealand so he could continue the fun, so to speak. We bought a 66ZZ guide book and I would certainly reccomend buying one if you are planning to travel the Mother Road. Enjoy your travels. Ian New Zealand.
super interesting, thanks for the vid - had a high school buddy with a 67 A code 289 notch back - it was no slouch and honestly got pretty decent mileage
Are you still looking for a 66 mustang? I have a 66GT. Not a dealer built but a true production built A code GT possibly interested in selling. And yes it is a driver. And a fast one at that
A code has a factory 4 barrel other then that its the same. However the K code was the real deal. 4 barrel, beefed up crank bearings, bigger valves and about a 470 lift cam. All 289s came with flat tops with 4 wings and small chambered heads. The 66 289 had a slighly smaller chamber. Other then being nostalgic save your money and build a roller 302 or 351.
Excuse me. The 64 and early 65 were D codes, lower compression than the A codes that followed. The D was just a C with a 4bbl. Comets got the D code 4 bbl 289 engines but were vin numbered as K. As in the Cyclones.
I recently sold my 68 GT Mustang with the one year only J code four barrel 302. The J code uses the same dished pistons as the two barrel engine, but gets it's 10 to 1 compression by using the 302 four barrel head with the smaller 289 style combustion chamber. The 302 two barrel head had a new, larger, more open chamber.
The 68 J code 302 head is identical to the C6OE-m 289 head, except for the cast in part numbers. Also the cast iron J code 4bbl intake is the same except for part #.
Well, I don't like automatics for my sports cars, I like to choose the gears in my cars, especially sports cars. I think the C5 is the nicest looking Vette, love the curves and body style. The standard version is probably more refined - but that's relative! Sound is probably less annoying and a little smoother overall. Ride height is probably higher, I hit a lot of entry ramps with the front spoiler, especially in LA. Fortunately the front spoiler is spring loaded so it doesn't get ripped off easily. If you want all-out performance, the Z06 is the way to go. If you're looking for a more enjoyable driver, get the standard version.
Got to have the manual. That when this car or any car for that matter really shines. It’s a shame the C8 does not have a manual option. Progress I guess….
good review, I have a 2002 Z06 I have actually added sound dampening insulation over the centre of the car. it has greatly reduced the heat generated into the cabin.
I suspect the sound dampening over the tunnel would help a lot with road noise. I did the rear "trunk" area and that cut down a lot of noise. Surprisingly, a lot came through the tunnel. But still fun to drive!
I would say it depends on what you're looking for. As a daily driver and long distance tourer, the Z06 isn't the best choice. As a track beast and short trip fun machine, pretty incredible.
Pops review was great. But cmon. This car is meant to be driven hard. Not cruise in it. Personally I’ve owned a c6z06 and c5z06. Both great cars for the price and smiles it will bring. A lot better then spending $200-300k on a car you worry about where you can park it.
It is meant to be driven hard, and it does that well. I might have been better off doing Route 66 in a standard C5, but I couldn't resist getting the Z06.
Do you think replacing the weather-stripping around the window areas would cut down on the wind noise? Could the vibration be from ball joints. tie-rod end, bushings needing to be replaced?
I have a 2003 Z06. Original owner. I still get into it with a huge smile! I have owned multiple Corvettes, but this is the one I will keep to the day I die. I have updated with a Double Din with Apple Car Play and all the latest with Bluetooth, rear camera, HD Radio. Thanks for posting!
Great video. I did R66 in April 2022 with an Eagle Rider group, I was on a Harley softail heritage. That Oatman Highway had me cutting my speed down at times, I don't like heights and some of those bends and drops had me twitching a bit! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
@@myroute66roadtrip15 I know what you mean, I almost had my head taken off on one of the left hand bends which was a bit sharper than I expected and my head was on, maybe just over, the centre line. The truck on the other side did move over a little, as that's all he was able to do. Saved me though!
