In this video I cover the parts differences between the famous Ford 289 A Code and C Code engines, used most famously in the 65-67 Mustangs. I cover the intake, carbs, pistons and the rest of the engine components, plus single vs dual exhaust applications. I review the hp and torque specs and what this means in daily driving.

super interesting, thanks for the vid - had a high school buddy with a 67 A code 289 notch back - it was no slouch and honestly got pretty decent mileage

The stats between an A code, and C ,are very informative....I’ve had my A code 42 years this year.. still soaking up the stats... thanks!!!

I recently sold my 68 GT Mustang with the one year only J code four barrel 302. The J code uses the same dished pistons as the two barrel engine, but gets it's 10 to 1 compression by using the 302 four barrel head with the smaller 289 style combustion chamber. The 302 two barrel head had a new, larger, more open chamber.

The 68 J code 302 head is identical to the C6OE-m 289 head, except for the cast in part numbers. Also the cast iron J code 4bbl intake is the same except for part #.

Excuse me. The 64 and early 65 were D codes, lower compression than the A codes that followed. The D was just a C with a 4bbl. Comets got the D code 4 bbl 289 engines but were vin numbered as K. As in the Cyclones.

A code has a factory 4 barrel other then that its the same. However the K code was the real deal. 4 barrel, beefed up crank bearings, bigger valves and about a 470 lift cam. All 289s came with flat tops with 4 wings and small chambered heads. The 66 289 had a slighly smaller chamber. Other then being nostalgic save your money and build a roller 302 or 351.
