What i like about Stardew Valley is you don't need to end up with a farm that's completely efficient and makes you a ton of money. You don't need to make 100k a day. You can just farm your spouse's favourite crop and food for the mines and fish all day and talk to people. That's what I like about this game. I like grinding and hoarding and speedrunning my beginnings and i like that i can get 20k before spring 13 to get exactly 192 seeds of strawberries plus anything else in thw shop that'll catch my interest and then spend my time in the mines getting materials to upgrade my tools and also collect 2 of every fish just to have in a chest and then decorate my farm and make it pretty and functional.

I jokingly blame my hatred of math on an instance in 2nd grade. I love art so when there was a problem that called for four rabbits i would draw them with ears and smiles. My teacher told me "You're taking too long. Just draw them as circles or squares." And i felt so crushed by that. It solidified in my head that STEM were not places where i could flourish creatively. And it made me DREAD every math class from then on.

I agree very strongly about the need for creativity in creating full happy healthy beings. And roleplaying and storytelling in general are wonderful tools for building empathy. I agree with so much in this video, which is why I have to point out that dungeons and dragons is an old paradigm of game design that has many outdated ideas, and has such a stranglehold on the economy of table top roleplaying that it actively suppresses creativity in game design. It seems to create lifelong players who never try other games and never fully move to stage three, they may design games inspired by d&d but only ones that fit into the existing rules set. There is a whole world of struggling indie game designers publishing works that are far more interesting, creative, empathetic, and frankly more satisfying to play for less effort than D&D. I encourage progressive people who have an interest in D&D to try something like Thirsty Sword Lesbians, a game by a Trans creator that centers queer romance, a more collaborative play, and fighting back against oppression, within the tropes of fantasy adventure.

Idk i think its pretty deepely inbeded in our hunter gatherer brain thats its fun or at least satisfying to collect and gather stuff. Like i think under a communist utopia people would still be using these mechanics in games, like collecting, because we like doing that. I feel like some of these things we call capitlaism in the mechanics are just deep in our brain and always have been and probably always will. Its just more fun feeling like you earned something than if the game just handed you everything for free.

In a way it's no shock that video essayists struggle with plagiarism. The video essayist needs the language of academia to be viewed as intelligent, it's not exactly a chasm from adopting the language to adopting the phrase to adopting the sentence and so on. What video essayists need is the peer review of an antagonistic comment section, but creators would prefer overbearing moderation to a truly uncaptured audience. I mean no ill will towards this video which was fine, but these videos are designed to be first and foremost agreeable with a peer group which as the author admits likely has a lot of overlap.
