people have mentioned that Ethel was an unreliable narrator but i don't know if anyone else picked up on the fact that there were missing poster signs about her in the diner that they went to, and in the motel rooms her seeing isiah differently is because he used her body for money. then at some point he manipulated her into loving him and never wanting to leave him, he'd been planning on doing everything to her from the start. the last 2 minutes reminds me of the flower children in the 60s who would dance around fire pits and have 0rg13s. it's the symbolize her "freedom" doesn't exist anymore because he has her captive.
this genuinely made my stomach hurt like a sharp pain and put chills all over my body. her talent is unmatched and the details you can’t hear in the original behind the instrumentals are one of a kind. for my own sanity i don’t think i can listen to this version ever again 😭😭
She’s just brilliant the fact she wrote produced and sang all of the songs on this album by herself is incredible. This is my favourite song and brought me to tears when i heard it first. So pure and spiritual and healing. I love you Hayden thank you ❤
-I’M A SURVIVOR- of almost being unalived at the hands of my husband with one child in my belly and one at my side. This song is the closest thing I have found that could ever describe my trauma. I thank God every day I survived, but this is the hell I live with. Our justice system is broken.
These crosses all over my body Remind me of who I used to be Give myself up to him in offering Let him make a woman out of me I'm just a child, but I'm not above violence My mama raised me better than that When the preacher talks, that man demands his silence And daddy said, "Shoot first, then run and don't look back" So take me down to the river And bathe me clean Put me on the back of your white horse to ride All the way to the chapel, let you wash all over me Ah, ooh Ooh Ooh, ooh Ooh I've killed before and I'll kill again Take the noose off, wrap it tight around my hand They say, "Heaven hath no fury like a woman scorned" And baby, Hell don't scare me, I've been times before So take me down to the river And bathe me clean Put me on the back of your white horse to ride All the way to the chapel, let you wash all over me These crosses all over my body Remind me of who I used to be And Christ, forgive these bones I've been hiding Oh, and the bones I'm about to leave, yeah And take me down to the river And bathe me clean, yeah Put me on the back of your white horse to ride All the way to the chapel, let you wash all over me, yeah Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah
the main character from the album has just ran away from home and she's alone in the woods reflecting on her relationship she had with her just passed father and the abuses he comitted against her. :/
