Project driven with something always happening in or around the shop. Journeyman tool & die maker and foundry guy. I make all my casting patterns the old fashioned way, by hand! I’m constantly making and casting cool and interesting things from hot rod parts to bottle openers, key chains and so much more and all are original designs by me. I have a machine shop to support the machining end of the casting gig, I also am the owner and creator of Crafty-B Nostalgic Speed home to the world's coolest handcrafted gas caps and how to shop videos.

High so do you think i could do this on the hood/bonnet of a car. I have a car that is supposed to have 9 of these slots all in various lengths each side up the bonnet however my car doesn't have its original hood/bonnet on it and its impossible to find another. Only hoods/bonnets that came on the standard car not the high performance one like mine. I ask as sheet metal is obviously much thinner and flexible. Ive been thinking about doing it this way but ive never done it on metal before only abs plastic

You probably should use a drill point gage to make sure your tip is centered. And as he said, get the angles right. Should be 118° tip, but doesn't matter so much depending on what you are drilling through. The relief angles is very important. If too shallow you won't be cutting much. If too much angle, too steep, it will dig in fast and break. Should be about 12° angled down.

I used to use a 3/4" drill mandrel with a sueded leather pad and ultra fine lapping compound. On aluminum, it would give you a good swirl pattern, but on stainless, it would give you a strong prismatic effect.
@dawg7230
@dawg7230 8 месяцев назад
I think using the ultra fine lapping compound is the secret for steel. Ive found that using normal metal polish that you might use for a set of alluminum wheels or exhaust tips works wonders. I used a wooden dowel as my tool and had really good results. Ive heard using oil and a fine carbide abrasive gives a great less shiny finish on steel.

for a late model engine you want the larger bell housing and 12 volt syst. otherwise you have to flycut the housing to accept the 12 volt larger flywheel.

I believe it needs to be a continuous circle of power, so if you can figure out how to do that with two batteries, do it! I'd Google "how to wire something with two batteries" and see what you find. Ingenuity is genius!

Very cool video. It's hard to find info on these buggys. I'm going to pick one up in a couple of days. Unfortunately it's just a body and VW's are getting harder to find and more expensive. Not sure if I'll build it or flip it but I couldn't pass up that funky body style. 😉
