I grew up in Brooklyn NY in the 1960s and 1970s. I remember hearing Jim Donnelly and Lou Adler doing news, Neil Bush in the traffic helicopter, Gordon Barnes on weather and Win Elliott/Spencer Ross on sports. I will miss this iconic radio station. My mother would turn on the radio to WCBS and that's how my brothers and I knew that it was time to go to school. Now, as a truck driver, WCBS was how I navigated into NYC. I am completely choked up. Some of those names are LEGENDARY. WCBS. Gone but NEVER forgotten.

This sign-off and format change should never have happened. Audacy, Inc., based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is truly replacing local radio programming with national radio programming, especially in the New York City metropolitan area. Audacy owns not only the subject radio station, but also WFAN (660 AM, simulcast on 101.9 FM since 2012 when it was owned by CBS), WINS (1010 AM, simulcast on 92.3 FM since 2022), WXBK (94.7 FM), WCBS-FM (101.1 FM), WNEW-FM (102.7 FM), and 219 other radio stations in 44 other media markets across the United States. No person wants all-sports radio as of now as that has now been appealing to sports gamblers. Philip Dunton Murphy, the 56th Governor of New Jersey, wanted to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, and so, that overturn happened. Because of that, sports betting became a national problem again. Sports betting needs to remain banned in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York as sports betting totally causes frauds. It is up to the States' governments, or to the people of the States, to decide if sports betting is to be banned, not the federal government. Please see the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. With generative A.I. applications writing fake and biased news stories in anonymous-run websites, and with people on "social" media not providing enough first-hand evidence (as evidenced with the pet-eating rumors involving Springfield, Ohio (no first-hand evidence was provided at first); those Haitian migrants entered into Springfield, Ohio legally and have their jobs, so those claims should not have been amplified), access to factual information with no sensationalism is totally crucial. Outside of New York Mets baseball coverage, no person will listen to 880 AM now that the format has changed to all-sports. For their radio stations serving the New York City metropolitan area and their broadcasting facilities at 345 Hudson Street in Manhattan, Audacy, Inc. needs to divest in all of those aforementioned assets. For the New York City metropolitan area, to avoid antitrust concerns, CBS should only regain ownership of the stations that are on 880 AM and 101.1 FM, plus the broadcasting facilities at 345 Hudson Street in Manhattan. From there, the station that is on 880 AM should have its callsign changed from WHSQ back to WCBS and the all-news format will be brought back while they will still broadcast sporting events such as New York Mets baseball games (If that divesture takes place, CBS will have those broadcasting rights, not Audacy). Sporting events that would be broadcasting on 880 AM should also be simulcast on 101.1 FM to reach people of the New York City metropolitan area who frequently listen to FM radio stations more than AM radio stations. For Audacy's other radio stations in the such metropolitan area: Emmis Communications started WFAN on 1050 AM in 1987, and moved to 660 AM when WNBC radio signed off in 1988. Emmis sold WFAN to Infinity Broadcasting in 1992, and Westinghouse Electric (which would later merge with CBS) purchased Infinity Broadcasting by 1996. Because Emmis Communications started WFAN, Emmis should divest ownership in both WLIB (1190 AM, owned since 2014) and WEPN-FM (98.7 FM, owned since 1994 when it was WRKS-FM) and regain ownership of WFAN (660 AM and the FM simulcast on 101.9 FM). For WEPN-FM, that station should have the same potential owners of WOR (710 AM), whose ownership should be divested from iHeartMedia. WINS was named for Hearst Newspapers' International News Service; Hearst owned WINS from 1932 to 1946 when Crosley Broadcasting purchased the station. Crosley then sold the station to John Elroy McCaw's Gotham Broadcasting in 1953, and Westinghouse Electric then purchased the station in 1962. Currently, Hearst Communications currently owns magazines, newspapers, 29 local television stations, and only 2 local radio stations. While CBS should regain ownership of, and bring the all-news format back to, 880 AM, Hearst should regain ownership of WINS (1010 AM and the FM simulcast on 92.3 FM), which already has an all-news format since 1965 (when it was owned by Westinghouse, merging with CBS by 1997), but because a different company would own WINS, the news operations will not be the same as that of the to-be-relaunched WCBS. For WNEW-FM (102.7 FM), that station should be independently owned, and while at that, its format needs to be changed to an album-oriented rock format. As of 1992, for 1130 AM, WBBR, owned by Bloomberg L.P. (Limited Partnership), occupies that frequency. Financial news still interests businesspeople and those people want that kept on the radio, so as a compromise, WBBR would move to 1150 AM while WNEW (AM) relaunches on 1130 AM with a news-talk format (programming to be decided by the potential owners) while additionally airing sporting events that would also be simulcasted on the FM radio station. From there, WNEW (AM) and WNEW-FM would have the same owners. For WXBK (94.7 FM), that station needs to be independently owned once again. Those same owners should also own what is currently WNYM (970 AM), but because both stations are licensed to New Jersey and both stations need to adequately serve New Jersey, WNYM (that callsign stands for "New York Metro") needs to have its callsign changed. For what is now WXBK, no person wants to hear hip hop "music", which has no actual talent in terms of how that is done, and country music is more suited for the Southern United States, so for both of those stations, the station on 970 AM would retain a talk format while the station on 94.7 FM will have a different music format (to be decided). Both of those stations would also occasionally air sporting events, and that part is to be decided by those potential owners. We know that most young people stream music and sporting events, and get their information from "social" media, but what is provided by streaming services is heavily compressed (it is poor quality), and "social" media companies prioritize revenue over serving the public; thus, "social" media definitely is not credible. Internet radio can be a viable option, but that is not always viable as that is prone to heavy compression, long delays, and buffering. Furthermore, in times of an emergency, internet service can go down. Traditional local radio has lower delays, never buffers, and is always available in times of an emergency. This is the same case with local television (when received with an antenna; cable television systems do go out in those times). Whenever a particular event occurs, such as an earthquake, hurricane, or tornado, people need to have access to critical emergency information, and in those times, internet and cellular phone service would not be available, so for that, local radio and television can be your only sources of information. Portable radio receivers and portable television sets will continue to be produced so that we continue to get critical information when we have no internet service. Of course, local television stations have a fully staffed newsroom that would provide critical emergency information, but for local radio stations, Audacy, Incorporated, along with Cumulus Media, Incorporated and iHeartMedia, Incorporated (formerly Clear Channel) totally do not care about serving the public and continue to suck the life out of local radio. Those three corporations reduced competition and need to be broken up for the benefit of the American people.
